‘You Have To Respect The Water’: Participant Experiences Of Appreciating And Managing The Risks Associated With Open Water Swimming – A Rapid Ethnographic Study, Mark A. Christie, David Elliott
‘You Have To Respect The Water’: Participant Experiences Of Appreciating And Managing The Risks Associated With Open Water Swimming – A Rapid Ethnographic Study, Mark A. Christie, David Elliott
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Open water swimming (OWS) has rapidly grown in popularity, driven by the purported health benefits of cold-water immersion. A paucity of research remains specifically considering the notable risks inherent in OWS participation, and a lack of qualitative research on freshwater swimming experiences, and safety-related issues therein. This rapid ethnographic study, based at a dedicated OWS lake in the UK, conducted semi-structured interviews with OWS participants (n=17; female=11, male=6). Two core themes emerged: environmental issues impacting OWS experiences and behaviours; and knowledge and education of OWS which highlighted safe/unsafe practices, levels of education for managing risks, personal preparedness, swimming solo/with others, …
Construction Of Embedded Governance Model Of Food Safety Risk In China, Cai Shi-Qin
Construction Of Embedded Governance Model Of Food Safety Risk In China, Cai Shi-Qin
Food and Machinery
As an innovative research method, embedded governance not only pays attention to the impact of institutional factors on organizational change, but also pays more attention to the importance of economic, political, social and other factors in organizational development. The review summarized the practical problems of "decoupling" between the governance subject, governance mechanism, governance means and governance objectives in Chinese food safety risk, such as the unidirectional governance subject, the decoupling of governance means, and the hysteresis of governance mechanism. It is pointed out that the embedded management of food safety risks in China can be realized and the new model …

Key Risk Factors Influencing Harbor Tugboat Operations For Kaohsiung Port, Wen-Jui Tseng, Ji-Feng Ding, Chia-Ming Liu, Liou-Yuan Li
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
The harbor tugboat operation is a very important business and process of Kaohsiung port. To ensure the safety of harbor tugboat operations and to reduce the occurrence of accidents, it is an important issue to conduct a risk assessment of tugboat operations for Kaohsiung port. Hence, the main purpose of this paper is employ the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to evaluate key risk factors influencing the harbor tugboat operations for Kaohsiung port. At first, a total of three evalu-ation dimensions with 14 preliminary risk factors are gener-ated from literature and interviews of tugboat captains. We then applied the steps …

Analysis Of Effectivity Scheme Based On Risk Management And Efficiency For The Acceleration Of Clean Water Fulfillment In Indonesia, Yuki Mahardhito Adhitya Wardhana
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
The Indonesian government has a target to provide 100% clean water through its “100-0-100 Urban” scheme. The objective is based on its Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) 2015–2019 and the ambition to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. The realization of a clean water supply, as of 2018, reached just 73%, and that in the cities, with only 2% growth per year. The cost needed to achieve the target of 100% clean water in Indonesia is Rp253 trillion. Given the fiscal limitations of the State Budget, financing alternatives need to be developed. Currently, there are two mechanisms …

The Ocean Lifeguard Intervention Continuum: A Cognitive Aid For Surf Lifeguard Education, William A. Koon, Ryan M. Gates, Shane Scoggins, Paul Andrus, Jack A. Futoran
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
Ocean lifeguards are constantly engaged in beach risk analysis, required to efficiently evaluate a variety of environmental and other factors quickly in order to triage and prioritize who needs help. Teaching these skills is a challenge for introductory training programs. We sought to improve new lifeguards’ understanding of the interaction of various risk components in the beach environment and aid decision-making related to when a lifeguard should intervene in a situation. We developed a two-part cognitive aid for introductory ocean lifeguard education depicting individual and interacting elements of a beach goer’s risk of drowning or injury and the process by …
What Are The Most Appropriate Treatments, Preventions And Family Planning Options For Patients With Factor V Leiden?, Simha Wolf
The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences
The management of Venous Thromboembolism in terms of treatments and prevention has been well researched for patients who have been discovered as positive for Factor V Leiden genetic clotting disorder, in either the homozygous or the heterozygous genotype. In fact, the research and development of new agents called Direct oral anticoagulants aim to treat and prevent clotting events while minimizing the risks of bleeding. Although several risk factors have been identified in relation to VTE, Factor V Leiden mutation presents a seemingly higher risk due to its unpredictable incidences of clotting events, even in patients with optimal health characteristics. Yet, …

Impact Of Climate Change On Shihmen Reservoir Water Supply, Tai-Yi Chu, Jyun-Long Lee, Wen-Cheng Huang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology
This study evaluated the impact of climate change on the water supply of the Shihmen reservoir in northern Taiwan. Five downscaled general circulation models that represent the daily meteorological data of 2046-2065 were adopted. The future inflow of the Shihmen reservoir was estimated using the tank model. Subsequently, the water supply risk under the given demand and operating conditions was simulated and assessed. Compared with 2004-2011, the average annual precipitation of the Shihmen watershed in 2046-2065 is lower, particularly during the wet season (May-October). Therefore, the risk to the water supply will increase in the first cropping season (from March …
Factors Governing Risk Of Cougar Attacks On Humans, David Mattson, Kenneth Logan, Linda Sweanor
Factors Governing Risk Of Cougar Attacks On Humans, David Mattson, Kenneth Logan, Linda Sweanor
Human–Wildlife Interactions
Since the 1980s wildlife managers in the United States and Canada have expressed increasing concern about the physical threat posed by cougars (Puma concolor) to humans. We developed a conceptual framework and analyzed 386 human– cougar encounters (29 fatal attacks, 171 instances of nonfatal contact, and 186 close-threatening encounters) to provide information relevant to public safety. We conceived of human injury and death as the outcome of 4 transitions affected by different suites of factors: (1) a human encountering a cougar: (2) given an encounter, odds that the cougar would be aggressive; (3) given aggression, odds that the …

Estimation Of Risk Efficient Farm Structures Along The Kızılırmak River In North Central Anatolia: An Application Of Minimization Of The Absolute Deviation, Vedat Ceyhan, H. Avni̇ Ci̇nemre
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
A risk-programming model was developed to evaluate the tradeoffs between risk and expected returns for farms along the Kızılırmak River in North Central Anatolia. Risk efficient farm structures were derived for representative farms by using minimization of the absolute deviation procedures, which permit the estimation of a farm's risk-return frontier. Research results reveal that farm plans are sensitive to the risk criteria in the research area. Rice and maize are the most high-risk activities, followed by lettuce and soybean. Wheat, sugar beet and dairy activities have a more stabilizing effect on farm income compared to others. Medium size and large …
