Paleo-Ontogenetic Growth Curves: Evidence For Extreme Past Animal Longevity?, Leo Hebert Iii Dec 2023

Paleo-Ontogenetic Growth Curves: Evidence For Extreme Past Animal Longevity?, Leo Hebert Iii

Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism

One of the Bible's most ridiculed claims is its assertion that pre-Flood and immediate post-Flood humans experienced lifespans of hundreds of years. Hence, the ability to partially corroborate the Bible's claim in this regard should be of great interest to creation researchers. Paleontologists have within the last two decades become increasingly interested in using growth rings recorded in fossil forms to make inferences about past growth rates, sizes, and lifespans. Examination of these growth rings suggest that some creatures in the pre-Flood world matured quite slowly compared to similar extant forms. Also, multiple studies have shown that slower development and …

Allometric And Metabolic Scaling: Arguments For Design... And Clues To Explaining Pre-Flood Longevity?, Leo Hebert Iii Dec 2023

Allometric And Metabolic Scaling: Arguments For Design... And Clues To Explaining Pre-Flood Longevity?, Leo Hebert Iii

Proceedings of the International Conference on Creationism

Within the creationist community, there has been recent interest in applying engineering principles to the study of living things. Engineers routinely attempt to maximize certain qualities, such as efficiency and durability, while minimizing others, such as cost of construction, within certain design limits or constraints. Biologists have long suspected that living things are in some sense “optimized” and there is a long history of attempting to understand biological systems in terms of this optimization. This is strong prima facie evidence of intelligent design, yet evolutionists attribute this optimization to evolution and natural selection.

Biological optimization is closely related to allometry, …

The immune system of semi- and super-centenarians (i.e., the oldest centenarians) is believed to have peculiar characteristics that enable them to reach extreme longevity in a relatively healthy state. Therefore, in previous papers, we investigated, through flow cytometry, variations in the percentages of the main subsets of Tαβ and Tγδ cells in a Sicilian cohort of 28 women and 26 men (age range 19-110 years), including 11 long-living individuals (>90 years old) and 8 oldest centenarians. These investigations suggested that some observed immunophenotypic changes may contribute to the extreme longevity of the oldest centenarians. In the present study, to …

Translational Medicine @ UniSa

Population ageing is a great achievement of humanity, but it also represents a challenge that the Western world is currently facing, as ageing is associated with increased susceptibility to age-related inflammatory diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to fully understand the mechanisms of healthy ageing to prevent the harmful aspects of ageing. The study of long living ndividuals (LLIs) is a great model for trying to achieve this goal. Accordingly, the oxy-inflammatory status of Sicilian LLIs was reviewed in the present paper. Based on the reported data, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative stress strategies have been discussed, useful for delaying or avoiding the …

Research on longevity is important to both prolong lifespan and support healthy aging. Natural products are widely being utilized and used as new resources for drug molecules. Caenorhabditis elegans is an advantageous organism for longevity research and age-related diseases. In this study, we tested a number of plant extracts for their effects on C. elegans longevity. In lifespan assays, age- synchronized wild-type C. elegans specimens were treated with different concentrations of plant extracts. Plant extracts were prepared as either infusions or decoctions, similar to their traditional utilization. Hedera helix L. (Araliaceae) extended lifespan in worms in a concentration-dependent manner. The …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The breeding of female dairy goats with good quality sires has been a problem in rural areas and artificial insemination (AI) provides an answer to this issue. To develop an AI model, a total of 9 bucks were purchased from a local market. Semen was collected in an artificial vagina, the libido was noted, and the semen was evaluated for its physical characteristics. The libido, semen volume, mass motility, individual motility, and sperm concentration were 2.94 ± 0.25 (scale of 1-3), 0.79 ± 0.59 mL, 4.34 ± 0.93 (scale of 1-5), 55.01 ± 32.59%, and 1027 ± 406 million spermatozoa/mL, …

Predictors Of Adl Disability In Culturally Diverse Older Adults, Fernanda Winchester†, Rebecca Ellis‡, Maria Kosma‡, Katie E. Cherry‡, Priscilla D. Allen‡, Pamela A. Monroe‡, Robert H. Wood‡ Jul 2009

Predictors Of Adl Disability In Culturally Diverse Older Adults, Fernanda Winchester†, Rebecca Ellis‡, Maria Kosma‡, Katie E. Cherry‡, Priscilla D. Allen‡, Pamela A. Monroe‡, Robert H. Wood‡

International Journal of Exercise Science

The purpose of this study was to utilize the disablement pathway model to examine the contribution of physical function, dyspnea, and pain to disability in activities-of-daily-living (ADL) in culturally diverse older adults. Participants were 51 older adults (age = 69.0 years ± 9.7; 76.5% African-American, 51.0% < high school education, 52.9% < $20,000 annual income) from an urban community center and an independent living housing facility for seniors. Participants completed the Functional Status Index (FSI), which provides ratings of need for assistance (FSIA) and pain (FSIP) with ADL, the Continuous Scale Physical Functional Performance 10-item Test (CS-PFP10), and an analog dyspnea scale. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed that facility, physical function, pain, and dyspnea accounted for 50.5% of the variance in disability and that pain (β = .43, p < .01) and physical function (β = -.39, p < .01) were the only significant predictors. In the second model, facility, dyspnea, and pain explained 27.6% of the variance in physical function, and facility (β = .39, p < .01) and dyspnea (β = -.26, p = .05) were the only significant predictors. Based on the disablement pathway model, physical functional improvement and pain prevention and management should be targeted when designing culturally appropriate strategies for delaying disability and maintaining independent life.

Temperature Dependent Life History Traits Of Brevicoryne Brassicae (L.) (Hom., Aphididae) On White Cabbage, Serdar Satar, Ulrich Kersting, M. Rifat Ulusoy

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The developmental time, survival rate and reproduction of the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.) (Homoptera, Aphididae), were evaluated on detached cabbage leaves (Brassicae oleracea var. capitata) at four constant and two alternating temperatures (15, 20, 25, 30, 25/30 and 30/35 ºC). Developmental periods of immature stages ranged from 12.5 days at 15 ºC to 6.0 days at 25/30 ºC. The alternating temperature of 30/35 ºC was lethal to immature stages of B. brassicae. The lower developmental threshold for the cabbage aphid was estimated at 4.0 ºC and it required 142.9 degree-days for a first instar to become an adult. The …

Longevity Record For A Wild Allegheny Woodrat (Neotama Magister) In West Virginia, Michael T. Mengak, Steven B. Castleberry, W. Mark Ford, Nikki L. Castleberry, Jane L. Rodrigue

Virginia Journal of Science

The Allegheny woodrat (Neotoma magister) is found throughout much of the central and southern Appalachians and adjacent portions of the Interior Highlands. Allegheny woodrats have declined in the northern portions of their range and are state-listed as threatened, endangered or sensitive species of concern in every state where they occur. Until recently, biologists have had to rely on biological data collected from the closely related eastern woodrat (N. floridana) because of limited research on the Allegheny woodrat. We have been studying the ecology and natural history of woodrats in Virginia and West Virginia since 1990. On …

Cold storage (+ 6°C) considerably influenced the adult longevity, fecundity and sex ratio of the parasitoid. Experimental evidence showed that 85.27% of adults died after …

Longevity In Some Wild Type And Hybrid Strains Ofdrosophila Melanogaster, Şükran Çakir, Ali̇ Ni̇hat Bozcuk Jan 2000

Longevity In Some Wild Type And Hybrid Strains Ofdrosophila Melanogaster, Şükran Çakir, Ali̇ Ni̇hat Bozcuk

Turkish Journal of Biology

It is known that aging is a multifactorial mechanism composed of both genetic and environmental components. The main evolutionary theories of aging are antagonistic pleiotropy and mutation accumulation, neither of which has substantial experimental support yet. In this study, the longevities of three wild type strains of Drosophila melanogaster and F1 hybrids derived from them were determined. Heterosis caused an increase in the adult lifespan of F1 hybrids.

The Effect Of Cadmium Nitrate On The Longevity Of Drosophilamelanogaster, Eli̇f Yeşi̇lada, Lütfi̇ye Gelegen

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effect of cadmium nitrate on the longevity of Drosophila melanogaster was tested. When cadmium nitrate was given throughout the adult life it caused a decrease in the mean life-span of flies in all treated groups. Furthermore, the effect of cadmium nitrate on young populations was also compared with aged populations. The young populations survived longer than aged populations with the food medium containing cadmium nitrate.

Growth Kinetics And Longevity Of The Salt Marsh Rush Juncus Roemerianus, Lionel N. Eleuterius, John D. Caldwell Jan 1981

Growth Kinetics And Longevity Of The Salt Marsh Rush Juncus Roemerianus, Lionel N. Eleuterius, John D. Caldwell

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Vegetative development of shoots of the tidal marsh rush Juncus roemerianus was studied quantitatively in short (S) , medium (M), and tall-leaved (T) populations. Shoot longevity varied between populations, with some shoots producing one leaf and living 4 months, while others produced seven leaves and lived over 4 years. An equation was developed from plastochron and leaf-age determinations to estimate shoot age in each population studied. Major morphological events common to all populations were (1) cessation of growth of the first leaf produced on an erect stem when growth of the second leaf was initiated, and (2) death of the …
