A well-balanced intracellular iron trafficking in glial cells plays a role in homeostatic processes. Elevated intracellular iron triggers oxidative stress and cell damage in many neurological disorders, including migraine. This study aimed to investigate the effects of glyceryl trinitrate (GTN), on cellular iron homeostasis, matrixmetalloproteinase (MMP)-9, and calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) receptor (CRLR/CGRPR1) production in microglia, astrocyte, and meningeal cell cultures. Primary glial and meningeal cells in culture were exposed to GTN for 24 h. Messenger RNA expression was assessed using qPCR. Iron accumulation was visualized via modified Perl?s histochemistry. MMP-9 levels in cell culture supernatants were measured using …

Hephaestin (Hp) is a trans-membrane protein, which plays a critical role in intestinal iron absorption. Hp was originally identified as the gene responsible for the phenotype of sex-linked anaemia in the sla mouse. The mutation in the sla protein causes accumulation of dietary iron in duodenal cells, causing severe microcytic hypochromic anaemia. Although mucosal uptake of dietary iron is normal, export from the duodenum is inhibited. Hp is homologous to ceruloplasmin (Cp), a member of the family of multi copper ferroxidases (MCFs) and possesses ferroxidase activity that facilitates iron release from the duodenum and load onto the serum iron transport …

Treating Anemia Of Chronic Disease, Sarit Fischer Jan 2020

Treating Anemia Of Chronic Disease, Sarit Fischer

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Anemia of chronic disease (ACD) is the result of altered iron metabolism, blunted erythropoiesis, and shortened red blood cell survival caused by inflammatory cytokines. Hepcidin plays a key role in anemia of chronic disease by inducing endocytosis of the iron exporter ferroportin. Iron is trapped in enterocytes, hepatocytes, and macrophages, and is unavailable for hemoglobin synthesis. When treating the underlying disease is not an option, or anemia is severe, ACD should be treated. While oral iron supplementation is not suitable for ACD, intravenous iron may be effective. Erythropoiesis stimulating agents are a common approach to treating ACD, but a large …

Exploring The Value Of Plant Analysis To Enhance Water Use Efficiency In Southwest Kansas, A. J. Foster, I. Kisekka, B. Golden

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Nutrient deficiency is identified by use of visual symptoms. However, the application of the proposed deficient nutrient often does not result in the correction of the observed visual symptoms. This is because essential nutrients do not operate independently of each other or independently of the overall plant health and growing conditions. A study was initiated in 2016 at the Kansas State University Southwest Research-Extension Center Finnup Farm near Garden City, KS, to use both soil and plant analyses to identify toxicities or hidden deficiencies that could be limiting corn yield at various irrigation capacities. Soil samples prior to planting and …

More specifically, the subicular area of the hippocampus is noted as a region that is subjected to more severe pathological changes due to the disease3. Braak staging is a method used to classify, …

Copper Enriches Efficacy Of Dp44mt In Breast Cancer Cells, Ufuk Özer Jan 2016

Copper Enriches Efficacy Of Dp44mt In Breast Cancer Cells, Ufuk Özer

Turkish Journal of Biology

Neoplastic cells need essential metals, such as iron and copper, for cellular functions and rapid growth. Metal chelation and changes in their redox cycle in favor of oxidative stress may be critical for making these cells vulnerable to cell death. The HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cell line, MCF7-HER2, and its vehicle control, MCF7-vec cells, were treated with CuCl2, FeSO4, and Dp44mT. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in response to these chemicals was detected with flow cytometry, and cell viability was measured by MTT assay in the cells. ROS levels were relatively increased by Dp44mT in the cells, and this was reversed …

Iron As A Biomarker For Alzheimer’S Disease, Samual Barlow, Dr. Jonathan Wisco Jun 2015

Iron As A Biomarker For Alzheimer’S Disease, Samual Barlow, Dr. Jonathan Wisco

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) is one of the highest causes of death in the United States. After the age of 65, the chance of getting Alzheimer’s doubles every five years. As the average lifespan of Americans increases, the importance of understanding AD and finding more efficient ways to treat it increases as well. The earlier AD is treated, the more effectively we are able to treat it. Non-heme iron (Fe) has been shown to spatially correlate with Abeta. Since Fe causes a signal dropout in susceptibility-weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), this imaging modality could possibly be used as a way to …

Fe-based catalysts are known to be effective for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis from coal but are sensitive to sulfur poisoning. Addition of manganese to these catalysts has been proposed in an effort to combat this catalyst deactivation. To investigate the fundamental physical aspects of Mn incorporation into Fe, different compositions of model thin films of Fe-Mn, ranging from 100% Fe to 100% Mn were studied for the very first time, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy. Our preliminary results indicate that the grain size of iron varied from 50 nm to 150 nm using the …

Proton-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) spectrometry is fast developing a reputation as a powerful analytical tool in the study of a range of ancient materials, including bronze, iron, gold, glass, faience, and smelting slag. PIXE data allows determination of the primary constituents which would indicate their recipe of production and determine their bulk physical properties (e.g., color of a glass, brittleness in a metal), and of a wide range of trace elements which may indicate the source of raw material s from which an artifact was constituted. Over the past seven years, PIXE spectrometry's primary advantage over other recognized methods now …

Iron Deficiency Of Oats In The Lower South West, Edgar Noel Fitzpatrick, R. Sprivulis Jan 1963

Iron Deficiency Of Oats In The Lower South West, Edgar Noel Fitzpatrick, R. Sprivulis

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Oats grown on the acid peaty sands of the West and South Coastal areas of Western Australia develop iron deficiency.

This deficiency can be cured by spraying with iron sulphate. A 2 to 4 per cent, solution can be applied through a low volume spray without damage to the plants. The spray should be repeated when deficiency symptoms reappear.

Growing oats on these soils is not recommended.
