Fewer than 25% of individuals in the United States with hypertension have controlled blood pressure (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). Hypertension Management Program (HMP) adopted the Health Coaches for Hypertension Control© (HCHC©) curriculum and adapted it for delivery by Extension agents. Eight lessons with intermittent health coaching calls were delivered. Pre/post-participation surveys determined changes in knowledge and self-reported weight, systolic (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). The pandemic forced a shift in methodology from in-person to virtual delivery, and results were compared. In both traditional and virtual programs, significant differences were found in weight, knowledge …

What Are The Possible Causes And Effective Therapeutic Approaches Of Preeclampsia?, Adina Hadi

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Preeclampsia is a complication of pregnancy primarily characterized by hypertension and proteinuria and affects other organs as well. The underlying causes are not yet fully understood. However, it is suggested that angiogenic factors of the placenta, genetic factors, a malfunctioning immune system, and oxidative stress all play a role in causing preeclampsia. Currently, the only definitive cure known for preeclampsia is delivery of the baby. Management of the condition includes taking preventative measures as well as drugs such as labetalol and MgSO4. This paper analyzes mechanisms of preeclampsia and determines the possible causes and most effective ways to manage the …

BAU Journal - Health and Wellbeing

After the war in Syria, Lebanon became among the top countries hosting for refugees. Many public health issues started to be raised with non-communicable diseases (NCDs) being high on the list. Providing health care for refugees is not easy since it requires huge resources, continuous follow-up encounters, and an extensive financial support. Reports show that NCDs are a health priority in Syrian refugees, and hypertension is the most prevalent one affecting more than half of the older Syrian refugees in Lebanon. This creates an enormous burden on the host community health system that needs effective interventions. While Lebanese citizens favor …

Are Health Problems In Adulthood Linked To Our Experiences In The Womb? An Epigenetic Approach, Simone Tendler

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

The origins of adult disease have been a prime topic for research, as deciphering causes can lead to strategies for preventions and cures. There has been recent intrigue focused on the environment in the womb. Records from England and Wales in 1911 show that those who suffered from cardiovascular disease were geographically correlated with regions high in infant mortality in the past, seventy years before the study. When looking into the cause of the neonatal death rates, low birth weight, poor maternal health, and high maternal death rates during childbirth were clearly associated. Barker inferred that there is much happening …

The Effect Of Maternal Aldosterone Levels On The Expression Of 11b-Hsd Isoenzymes In Normal And Hypertensive Rat Placentae, Nicole Jorissen Aug 2014

The Effect Of Maternal Aldosterone Levels On The Expression Of 11b-Hsd Isoenzymes In Normal And Hypertensive Rat Placentae, Nicole Jorissen

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

In this project, we developed a Western blotting procedure to semi-quantitate levels of 11β-HSD1 and 11β-HSD2 in whole cell extracts. Then, we applied this technique to analyze the effect of reduced maternal aldosterone levels on the expression of 11β-HSD1 and 11β-HSD2 isoenzymes in the placental tissue in both normal and hypertensive rats. These enzymes control levels of glucocorticoids which compete for aldosterone’s mineralocorticoid receptor. Overstimulation of this receptor results in hypertension. If aldosterone levels decrease, levels of the enzymes controlling active glucocorticoid concentrations might change to compensate for the lowered aldosterone levels. Decreased placental 11β-HSD2 expression could affect hypertension in …

Association Of Vitamin D Deficiency With Hypertension In Uninsured Women, Sreenivasa R. Chandana, Lakshmi P. Kocharla, Susan S. Harris, Radhika R. Kakarala

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Vitamin D deficiency is an epidemic in the United States. Uninsured women are at high risk due to a lower intake of vitamin D and limited sun exposure. We examined the association between vitamin D deficiency and hypertension in 96 uninsured women at a County Free Medical Clinic in urban Michigan. Questionnaires were used to obtain information about demographics, medical history including hypertension, and dietary habits. Measurements including blood pressure and serum 25(OH)D level were also collected. Prevalence of hypertension was higher in subjects with 25(OH)D less than 50nmol/l compared with others (85% vs. 27.3%, p = 0.014). For every …

Osteoblast Activity Is Diminished In Young Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats, Tyler J. Benson, Brandon Cherry, Steve Mifflin, Rhonda Prisby Mar 2012

Osteoblast Activity Is Diminished In Young Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats, Tyler J. Benson, Brandon Cherry, Steve Mifflin, Rhonda Prisby

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats (SHR) are used as a genetic model of essential hypertension. Reductions in cortical and cancellous bone mass and increased bone turnover have been observed in aged SHR vs. Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, normotensive genetics controls. In addition, antihypertensive aids have been effective in improving bone parameters in hypertensive rats. Thus, the relation between hypertension and bone remodeling warrants further attention. The purpose of this study was to determine how acute (i.e., 9 weeks) hypertension effects bone remodeling parameters (i.e., osteoclast and osteoblast activity). Methods: Right femora from 14-week-old SHR (n=5) and WKY (n=4) rats were dissected, fixed in …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The pathophysiological mechanisms underlying blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in preeclampsia/eclampsia have not been elucidated. This study investigated the effect of pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced seizures on the functional and structural properties of the BBB during N (omega)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME)-induced hypertension and proteinuria in pregnant rats. Animals were treated with L-NAME for 10 days, beginning on day 10 of pregnancy. The BBB permeability was determined by measurements of sodium fluorescein (NaFlu) extravasation into the brain. Occludin and aquaporin (AQP)-4 immunoreactivities were evaluated in brain sections. Severe proteinuria and significantly increased arterial blood pressure were observed following L-NAME treatment. PTZ-induced seizures in pregnant …

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells From Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats, William J. Krizmanich, Robert M. K. W. Lee Feb 1993

Scanning Electron Microscopy Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells From Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats, William J. Krizmanich, Robert M. K. W. Lee

Scanning Microscopy

The fine structure of vascular smooth muscle cells from large mesenteric arteries of adult (28 weeks) spontaneously hypertensive rats and Wistar-Kyoto rats was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The effect of the digestion method for SEM on tissue size and smooth muscle cell size was also studied using morphometric analysis. A significant reduction in cell size (42-43%) was present after critical point drying, based on the reduction in volume to surface ratio of smooth muscle cells. However, percent change of volume density and volume to surface ratio of smooth muscle cells after digestion and after critical point drying, was …

Quantitative Renal Vascular Casting In Nephrology Research, Vincent H. Gattone Ii, Andrew P. Evan Mar 1986

Quantitative Renal Vascular Casting In Nephrology Research, Vincent H. Gattone Ii, Andrew P. Evan

Scanning Electron Microscopy

The present paper describes the use of a quantitative renal vascular casting method to study the changes associated with kidney disease. Several animal models of hypertension (spontaneously hypertensive rat, SHR, with its normotensive rat the Wistar Kyoto, WKY; Dahl salt sensitive DS - hypertensive, and salt resistant DR -normotensive) were examined at time points when the systemic blood pressure was rising (6 and 12 weeks of age) and following renal denervation (in SHR-WKY rats). The SHR appears to have a smaller caliber afferent arteriole at both 6 and 12 weeks of age. This difference is probably not entirely due to …
