Treating Anemia Of Chronic Disease, Sarit Fischer Jan 2020

Treating Anemia Of Chronic Disease, Sarit Fischer

The Science Journal of the Lander College of Arts and Sciences

Anemia of chronic disease (ACD) is the result of altered iron metabolism, blunted erythropoiesis, and shortened red blood cell survival caused by inflammatory cytokines. Hepcidin plays a key role in anemia of chronic disease by inducing endocytosis of the iron exporter ferroportin. Iron is trapped in enterocytes, hepatocytes, and macrophages, and is unavailable for hemoglobin synthesis. When treating the underlying disease is not an option, or anemia is severe, ACD should be treated. While oral iron supplementation is not suitable for ACD, intravenous iron may be effective. Erythropoiesis stimulating agents are a common approach to treating ACD, but a large …

Turkish Journal of Biology

Heat shock family protein GroEL of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (Aa) has antigenic properties. We previously demonstrated that A. actinomycetemcomitans GroEL-like protein affects human CD4 T cells by converting them into IL-10 and IFNg double cytokine producing Tbet+ Th1 cells. The objective of this study was to investigate whether or not AaGroEL communicates with T cells directly. To do this, sorted cells from peripheral blood mononuclear cells were stimulated with AaGroEL for 48 h. Flow cytometry was used to measure soluble and intracellular cytokine expression in the cell cultures and detect TLR2 expression on the surface of T cells. Expression of six …

Production Of Cytokines Interleukin-6 And Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha In Human Adrenocortical H295r Cells, Joseph Johnson, Dr. Allan M. Judd

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Difficulties associated with research into the physiology of the human adrenal gland have been alleviated due to the isolation of the human adrenocortical tumor cell-line, NCI-H295R, which retains the ability to produce adrenocortical steroids (e.g. aldosterone, cortisol, DHEA) when grown in culture (1). We investigated whether these cells also produce cytokines, peptides which regulate endocrine and immune function.

Changes Of Cytokines In Mouse Skeletal Muscle And Plasma By A Single Bout Of Endurance Exercise., Minjung Lee, Noriaki Kawanishi, Koichi Yada, Yungli Hung, Tsubasa Mizokami, Hiroyuki Niihara, Katsuhiko Suzuki

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Introduction: Exercise influences some cytokine levels, which is considered the body’s reaction against endogenous stress. Previous human studies demonstrated that high intensity exercise contributes to a dramatic increase of plasma cytokines like Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) immediately after exercise. Recently, it has been identified that skeletal muscle produces cytokines and peptides and they exert both paracrine and endocrine effects. However, the sequential changes of cytokine production according to exercise conditions such as intensity, types and working time are still unclear. In this study, we identified the sequential changes of cytokines in both skeletal muscle and plasma after …

Effects Of Cytokines On Cell Cycle, Hati̇ce Güneş Jan 1999

Effects Of Cytokines On Cell Cycle, Hati̇ce Güneş

Turkish Journal of Biology

Cytokines are cellular regulatory proteins. They are secreted by specific cells, which are activated by certain stimuli, in different tissues. Cytokines control numerous biological functions and one of their important effects is on cell division. Although some of the cytokines have a positive effect on the cell cycle, some play a negative role. The positive and negative effects of cytokines depend upon the cell type. In this paper, the moleculer mechanisms of cytokine effects on the cell cycle are examined.
