Impact Of The Individual Characteristics Of French Trotters On Their Racing Performance, Wanda Gorniak, Ewa Walkowicz, Maria Soroko, Mariusz Korczynski

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of selected biometric characteristics on French trotters? racing performance. Moreover, the work attempts a prediction of racing performance indexes based on the horse?s individual characteristics, as well as the evaluation of the usefulness of an alternative method of a horse?s intravital measurements that limits the stress of the animal. A population of 64 horses of French trotter breed appearing in the Polish Stud Book of Trotters, which had participated in races in 2015, were subject to the investigation. The research material was represented by the indexes of racing performance combined …

Age Estimation Of Black Stork (Ciconia Nigra) Nestlings From Wing, Bill, Head, And Tarsus Lengths At The Time Of Ringing, Maciej Kaminski, Bartosz Janic, Lidia Marszal, Jerzy Banbura, Piotr Zielinski

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Black stork nestlings were measured (wing, bill, head, and tarsus lengths) at weekly intervals in central Poland in 2012, 2014, and 2015. The aim of the study was to provide growth equations based on nestling measurements to allow age estimation of black stork nestlings. The hatching hour and date of nestlings in five nests were determined using trail cameras. The age of the measured nestlings ranged from 18 to 53 days. Wing, bill, and head lengths showed linear growth, while tarsus growth was only linear for nestlings not exceeding 35 days old. Within the age range studied, wing length grew …

First Record Of Pond Sliders (Trachemys Scripta Scripta And T. S. Elegans) At Fredericksburg, Virginia With Observations On Population Size, Age And Growth, Werner Wieland, Yoshinori Takeda

Virginia Journal of Science

We conducted a turtle mark-recapture program within a 160 m stretch of the Fredericksburg Canal with standard, baited hoop nets from May to July 2012 to determine if a population of the introduced Red-eared Slider (Trachemys scripta elegans) and Yellow-bellied Slider (Trachemys s. scripta) are established in this area. We captured and marked nine Red-eared Sliders (1 male, 8 females) and estimated a population size of 23 individuals. Most were reproductively mature. The established population in the canal may be a source of introduction into the Rappahannock River.
