The Use Of Prognostic Markers To Predict Disease Progression And Clinical Outcome In Monoclonal Gammopathy Of Undetermined Significance, Smouldering Multiple Myeloma And Multiple Myeloma., Róisín C. Mcmonagle
International Undergraduate Journal of Health Sciences
Multiple Myeloma (MM) is an incurable plasma cell malignancy with a complex and incompletely understood molecular pathogenesis. Monoclonal Gammopathy of Undetermined Significance (MGUS) and Smouldering Multiple Myeloma (SMM) precede MM, with variable risks and rates of disease progression. The continuing high relapse and death rate in MM cases has prompted research into more accurate prognostic markers to predict progression from MGUS and SMM to MM, as well as identify MM cases with aggressive disease, in order to begin early, targeted and effective therapeutic intervention. Many studies have focused on utilising current markers more effectively, including M-protein, serum-free light chain ratio, …

Tumor stroma interaction is known to take a crucial role in cancer growth and progression. In the present study, it was performed gene expression analysis of stroma samples with ovarian and breast cancer through an integrative analysis framework to identify common critical biomolecules at multiomics levels. Gene expression datasets were statistically analyzed to identify common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by comparing tumor stroma and normal stroma samples. The integrative analyses of DEGs indicated that there were 59 common core genes, which might be feasible to be potential marks for cancer stroma targeted strategies. Reporter molecules (i.e. receptor, transcription factors and …

Personalized Medicine: The Use Of Biomarkers And Molecularly Targeted Therapies For Patient Care And Cancer Intervention, Wafa Asad, Emily Schmitt Lavin
Mako: NSU Undergraduate Student Journal
Personalized medicine and targeted therapy have been emerging fields of study for the remediation and inhibition of cancer. Personalized medicine in the treatment of cancer involves using genetic, immune, and proteomic profiling to provide therapeutic options as well as prognostic background for every patient and their tumor’s genetic mutations. Targeted therapies allow researchers and medical personnel alike to determine the appropriate treatment for a patient based on the molecular basis and mechanistic actions of a cancerous tumor. The overall significance of this study was to express how these treatments use biomarkers to pinpoint the location, and severity of the cancer, …

Chemical Epitope Targeting: Review Of A Novel Screening Technology, Qurrat Ul-Ain, Rene Kandler, Dylan Gillespie, Arundhati Nag
Scholarly Undergraduate Research Journal at Clark (SURJ)
Chemical Epitope Targeting is a novel technology developed for designing peptide ligands with high affinity and specificity against specific regions of a protein that may be inaccessible to small molecules or antibodies. In this review, we summarize the key steps and significant applications of this technology. Operating on the same principles as antibody-antigen interactions, this technique involves chemically synthesizing the region of interest on the protein, called the epitope, as a polypeptide with a biotin detection tag and a strategically placed alkyne or azide presenting amino acid. The constructed epitope is screened against a comprehensive linear or cyclic One Bead …

Effects Of Reduced Ph On Health Biomarkers Of The Seagrass Cymodocea Nodosa, Regan A. Mcenaney
DePaul Discoveries
Ocean acidification is a growing problem that may affect many marine organisms in the future. Within 100 years the pH of the ocean is predicted to decrease to 7.8, from the current ocean pH of around 8.1. Using phenolic acid levels as a stress indicator as well as respiration and chlorophyll content as a measure of health, the effect of lowering pH was tested on the seagrass, Cymodocea nodosa, in a controlled environment. Plant samples, water, and soil were taken from the Bay of Cádiz, Spain, and placed in aquaria in a temperature-controlled room. One control group was left …

Cancer remains the second most common cause of death in the US, accounting for nearly 1 of every 4 deaths. Studies have shown that the early detection of cancer leads to better patient prognosis and a greater five-year survival rate. [1] Diagnostic and prognostic markers play a key role in classifying tumors and determining the best treatment plan for a patient. Among these biomarkers, Thymidine kinase 1 (TK1) has been studied extensively, primarily as a diagnostic biomarker for a variety of cancer types. TK1 plays a role in regulating the intracellular thymidine pools throughout the cell cycle, and thus regulates …

Knee injury and pathology are common problems for Americans who are physically active; they affect half of all Americans who are over the age of 65, and the related annual costs are nearly twenty billion dollars. Knee pain alters running and walking neuromechanics1, and may be deleterious to knee articular cartilage. Researchers have hypothesized that if abnormal gait mechanics, due to knee pain persist, the resulting mechanical and physiological circumstances could influence genesis and progression rate of chronic knee joint pathologies, including knee osteoarthritis.

Transcriptomic Analysis Of Tomato Lines Reveals Putative Stress-Specific Biomarkers, Monther Taha Sadder, Abdullah Alsadon, Mahmoud Wahb-Allah
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Different abiotic stresses recruit dedicated signaling and regulatory genes in plants. Genome-wide stress-specific biomarkers were investigated in tomatoes. Three major abiotic stresses were compared: drought, heat, and salinity. For each stress type, 2 different tomato lines were included: susceptible and tolerant. Gene expression was examined by hybridizing to an available tomato microarray. Several stress responsive genes were upregulated in tolerant as well as in susceptible lines for each stress. Comparative analysis of gene expression in response to stress (drought, heat, or salinity) resolved a number of common biomarkers, while other groups of putative biomarkers were associated with each abiotic stress. …

Current Paradigms Of Cancer Chemoprevention, Rajendra G. Mehta
Turkish Journal of Biology
Cancer chemoprevention has been continually evolving ever since the term was coined in the 70s. From the original approaches of identifying chemopreventive agents from the dietary constituents based on the epidemiological data to the current status of adapting them from the molecular targets, significant understanding of cancer as a disease and its possible prevention has been achieved. The identification of the chemopreventive agent from a complex mixture of natural product extracts involves numerous steps including bioassay guided fractionation; evaluation of the extracts, fractions and isolated new chemicals selectively using in vitro and in vivo experimental models; and understanding the mechanism …
Progesterone Receptor Modulators In Breast Cancer, Ronald D. Wiehle
Progesterone Receptor Modulators In Breast Cancer, Ronald D. Wiehle
Turkish Journal of Biology
Breast cancer has been treated successfully with selective estrogen receptor antagonists (SERMs) such as tamoxifen, receptor-depleting agents such as fulvestrant, and aromatase inhibitors such as anastrozole. Selective progesterone receptor modulators (SPRMs or PRMs) have not been studied as much and are currently under investigation for inhibition of mammary carcinogenesis in animal models and breast cancer prevention trials in women. They might follow tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors in the adjuvant treatment of breast cancers with acquired resistance. These uses have not provoked ground-breaking progress or studies and PRMs do not have a high profile. Most in vitro and in vivo studies …

Biomarkers Of Petroleum Contamination In The Digestive Gland Of Perna Viridis (L.), Xivanand Narayan Verlecar, Karmabeer Jena, Somshekher Raghoba Desai, Priya Brata Das, Gagan Bihari Nityananda Chainy
Turkish Journal of Biology
Oxidative stress responses were evaluated in the digestive gland tissue of Perna viridis exposed to water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) of petrol and diesel at 0.5% and 5% concentrations over 5-, 10-, and 15-day periods. Increased lipid peroxidation, protein carbonyl, DNA integrity, and hydrogen peroxide in WAF-exposed specimens are indicative of oxidative damage due to dissolved petroleum extracts. A consistent increase in superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase, reduced glutathione, and ascorbic acid in WAF-exposed specimens signify the importance of antioxidants in protecting the cell against the oxidative damage arising from petroleum contamination. The responses of field specimens collected from …

Development Of Biomarkers For Endocrine Disrupting Compounds In The Fathead Minnow, Pimephales Promelas, Tara Frare
Undergraduate Review
Organic waste compounds (OWC’s) are an environmental concern that can have adverse effects on humans, animals, and the environment. Ethinyl estradiol (EE2) is one common OWC and is an active ingredient in oral birth control pills. The presence of EE2 in aquatic environments and drinking water can be linked to decreased fertility and altered physiology in fish. I am developing Q-PCR biomarkers to detect changes in fish at low concentrations before adverse effects occur at higher concentrations. RNA was extracted from twenty fathead minnows that had not been exposed to OWC’s and will be used to synthesize cDNA. Thus far …
