Effect Of Estrogen Pretreatment On Glial-Like Cell Viability Following Stress Response Hormone Treatment, Bridget N. Smith, Kevin S. Burgess, Kathleen S. Hughes

Georgia Journal of Science

The role of steroid hormones is critical in cellular function. Previous studies have found a positive correlation between the endogenous estrogen 17β-estradiol and cellular protection. Conversely, exogenous conjugated equine estrogens provide less protective mechanisms than endogenous hormones, and little is known about the role of estrogens in cellular protection during a stress response. In the present study, we compare the effects of short-term estrogen pretreatments (alone and in combination) on cell viability when cells with glial cell morphology are exposed to either epinephrine or cortisol. Results showed that 1 µM 17β-estradiol resulted in decreased cell viability following the epinephrine treatment; …

Heat Shock Proteins: Classification, Functions And Expressions In Plants During Environmental Stresses., Sara Khan, Raheela Jabeen, Farah Deeba, Ummara Waheed, Plosha Khanum, Nadia Iqbal

HSPs proteins are found mostly in every cell from prokaryotes to eukaryotes. HSPs have been comprehensively studied in animals and humans. Recently their role in plants was thoroughly studied. HSPs were described as a result of heat shock conditions, but now get activate by various stresses like Ultraviolet light, cold, wound healing, drought, salinity and pathogenic infections (Lindquist et al., 1988). The term “heat shock protein” is now incorrect because HSPs are not expressed only under high temperature, also expressed under other stresses. HSPs are essential in maintaining balanced cell internal conditions under optimum and damaged growth conditions about in …

Yeasts Isolated From Traditional Brem Bali Show Stress Tolerance Phenotype Against Fermentation-Related Stresses, Audria Bayu Lenka, Rika Indri Astuti, Sri Listiyowati

Makara Journal of Science

The search for microbes, primarily yeasts with unique characters such as the tolerance against fermentation-related-stresses, is gaining significant interest nowadays. Traditionally made alcoholic beverages can be used as sources for such yeasts, given that during fermentation and storage, microbes may develop stress tolerance responses leading to naturally stress-tolerant yeast strains. In this study, we used an alcoholic beverage, that is, Brem Bali, as the source of potential yeast isolates. We isolated nine yeast isolates from two traditional Brem Bali products. All isolates showed tolerance against high glucose stress (40–50%) and sensitivity against high-temperature stress (37–50 °C). Notably, isolate BT5 showed …
