A Redescription Of The Mature Larva Of Thermonectus Basillaris (Harris) (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae: Dytiscinae), Keith Carroll, E. H. Barman

Georgia Journal of Science

Mature larvae collected from Georgia ephemeral habitats were cultured into the adult stage and identified and described as Thermonectus basillaris. The legs of T. basillaris have fewer spiniform sensilla than reported for Acilius mediatus, and it appears that its two large dorsal stemmata are more massive than those of A. mediatus. These morphological differences indicate that nektonic larvae of T. basillaris and A. mediatus may be exploiting different prey regimes.

Taxonomy Of Poa Jubata And A New Section Of The Genus (Poaceae), Evren Cabi̇, Robert John Soreng, Lynn Gillespie

Turkish Journal of Botany

Poa jubata A.Kern. is an ephemeral, southeastern European species of which little is known. A molecular phylogenetic analysis of Poa L., including all previously identified major lineages, shows this species to be isolated, with a genotype here designated as J (plastid) j (nrDNA). It is assigned to the monotypic P. sect. Jubatae sect. nov. The section is differentiated from other Poa sections in having 5-nerved upper glumes, very narrow palea flanges, an annual habit, and erect solitary culms. Poa jubata occurs along coastal regions of the Balkans and is rather rare. Two new collections were made in 2015 in Thrace, …

Key To The Species Of Megachernes Beier (Pseudoscorpiones: Chernetidae),With Notes On M. Afghanicus And M. Pavlovskyi, Mahrad Nassirkhani, Reza Vafai Shoushtari

Turkish Journal of Zoology

An identification key is presented for all described species of the pseudoscorpions belonging to the genus Megachernes. Megachernes afghanicus Beier, 1959 is also considered as a junior subjective synonym of M. pavlovskyi Redikorzev, 1949.

Phlomis Iranica (Lamiaceae: Lamioideae), A New Species Fromthe Khorassan-Kopet Dagh Floristic Province, Ne Iran, Jamil Vaezi, Maryam Behroozian, Mohammad Reza Joharchi, Farshid Memariani Jan 2017

Phlomis Iranica (Lamiaceae: Lamioideae), A New Species Fromthe Khorassan-Kopet Dagh Floristic Province, Ne Iran, Jamil Vaezi, Maryam Behroozian, Mohammad Reza Joharchi, Farshid Memariani

Turkish Journal of Botany

The genus Phlomis L. consists of three species, Ph. cancellata Bunge, Ph. chorassanica Bunge, and Ph. herba-venti L., in the Khorassan-Kopet Dagh floristic province, NE Iran. A new species is described and illustrated here as Ph. iranica Joharchi & Vaezi sp. nov. from this area. We included voucher specimens of the new and allied species in a morphological and molecular (nrDNA ITS) framework to examine the taxonomic status of the new taxon. Results showed that Ph. iranica can be morphologically distinguished from the species distributed in NE Iran by seven diagnostic traits including length and width of calyx tube, flower …

Biometric Variation In Martes Foina From Mainland Greece And The Aegean Islands, Malamati Papakosta Jan 2017

Biometric Variation In Martes Foina From Mainland Greece And The Aegean Islands, Malamati Papakosta

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The geographical morphometric variations in the stone marten (Martes foina) from mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, and Crete were analyzed. Samples taken from the three areas were compared regarding 18 craniometrical and 5 body size variables. According to univariate statistics, 13 skull measurements from males and 15 from females (72% and 83% of total skull variables for males and females, respectively) did not differ significantly among mainland Greece, the Aegean Islands, and Crete. The morphological differences among mainland and insular populations showed a tendency for separation (63% overall correct classification from skull measurements of males, 72.5% and 73.6% for body …

Mating Behaviour And Its Relationship With Morphological Features In The Millipede Pachyiulus Hungaricus (Karsch, 1881) (Myriapoda, Diplopoda, Julida), Zvezdana Jovanovic, Sofija Pavkovic-Lucic, Bojan Ilic, Vukica Vujic, Boris Dudic, Slobodan Makarov, Luka Lucic, Vladimir Tomic Jan 2017

Mating Behaviour And Its Relationship With Morphological Features In The Millipede Pachyiulus Hungaricus (Karsch, 1881) (Myriapoda, Diplopoda, Julida), Zvezdana Jovanovic, Sofija Pavkovic-Lucic, Bojan Ilic, Vukica Vujic, Boris Dudic, Slobodan Makarov, Luka Lucic, Vladimir Tomic

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Although millipedes (Diplopoda) represent one of the most diverse classes of arthropods, data concerning details of their mating behaviour are very scarce. In this work, we explored mating behaviour of the European millipede Pachyiulus hungaricus under laboratory conditions, and its relationship with the size and shape of certain morphological traits. We conducted 3 types of behavioural tests: a mating arena test, a female choice test, and a male choice test. Premating behaviour was "sequenced" in 5 behavioural steps and, together with the duration of copulation, scored in all mating assays. Males were the more active sex in searching for mates, …

Dianthus Ucarii (Caryophyllaceae): A New Species From The Northwest Of Turkey, Ergi̇n Hamzaoğlu, Murat Koç, İlker Büyük

Turkish Journal of Botany

Dianthus ucarii Hamzaoğlu & Koç (Caryophyllaceae) is described as a new species to science based on material collected in Kırklareli Province in northwestern Turkey. The new taxon belongs to sect. Carthusiani (Boiss.) F.N.Williams and it is closely related to Dianthus pinifolius Sm., an Eastern Mediterranean element. A description, illustration, and identification key for the new species are given. In addition, D. ucarii and D. pinifolius are compared in terms of general morphology and molecular phylogeny.

A Taxonomic Study Of The Silene Sections Behenantha And Dichotomae (Caryophyllaceae) In Turkey Based On The Micromorphology Of Their Seed And Pollen, Mehmet Kuh, Kemal Yildiz, Ersi̇n Mi̇nareci̇ Jan 2017

A Taxonomic Study Of The Silene Sections Behenantha And Dichotomae (Caryophyllaceae) In Turkey Based On The Micromorphology Of Their Seed And Pollen, Mehmet Kuh, Kemal Yildiz, Ersi̇n Mi̇nareci̇

Turkish Journal of Botany

The seed and pollen grain micromorphologies of 10 taxa of the Silene sections Behenantha and Dichotomae (Caryophyllaceae) were analyzed in this study. Although the seeds of the analyzed taxa were generally reniform, S. tenuiflora and S. koycegizensis from the section Behenantha were clearly distinct from other taxa, while subspecies of S. dichotoma and S. euxina in the section Dichotomae showed differences. Pollen grains are periporate and spheroidal and ornamentation is generally spinulate-microperforate in all taxa. However, ornamentation is spinulate in S. euxina and semireticulate in S. koycegizensis. While the exine structure is generally tectate, it is semitectate in S. koycegizensis. …
