Comparison Of Phototactic Behavior Of Three Populations Of Dropsophila Melanogaster, Ross S. Anderson Jan 1976

Comparison Of Phototactic Behavior Of Three Populations Of Dropsophila Melanogaster, Ross S. Anderson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Phototactic response of three distinct breeding populations of Drosophila melanogaster are compared through experimental maze runs and under differing light stimuli. While it is suggested that more meaningful results may depend on intensified selection pressure and studies of a greater number of generations, evidence from these observations indicates a clear difference in photo tactic behavior between the fly population drawn from laboratory stock subject to in-breeding and the positive responses of the two populations captured "wild" and thus reflecting the selection process of nature.

Rapeseed Cultivation And Usage, M. Dolores Ahles Jan 1976

Rapeseed Cultivation And Usage, M. Dolores Ahles

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Rapeseed, an oil-producing crop that was cultivated in pre-Christian times in India and the Orient but was generally given up, has again become an important source of protein oil and meal. In Canada, now the leading export producer, rapeseed output is surpassed only by wheat, oats, and barley. Cultivation and processing as well as the history of this crop are discussed.

Chlorofluorocarbon Effects On Cardiac, Pulmonary, And Respiratory Patients, Mildred E. Olson Jan 1976

Chlorofluorocarbon Effects On Cardiac, Pulmonary, And Respiratory Patients, Mildred E. Olson

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Research results from studies of the physiological effects of aerosal propellants on animals and people are summarized. The papers selected for this summary were published between 1968 and 1975. Effects of the 15 chlorofluorocarbons used as propellants have been recorded on the cardiac, pulmonary and respiratory functions of a number of animal species as well as man. The fifteen propellants have been classified into four groups on the basis of their degree of toxicity. Fluorocarbon 11, the most frequently used propellant, is in group 1, the most toxic. The relative toxicity of each of the 14 other propellants compared with …

Nutrient Input By Precipitation In Northern Minnesota Forest Ecosystem, Nicholas B. Comerford, Edwin H. White Jan 1976

Nutrient Input By Precipitation In Northern Minnesota Forest Ecosystem, Nicholas B. Comerford, Edwin H. White

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

Yearly precipitation was sampled and analyzed for total content of N, P, K, Ca and Mg to assess the role of gross precipitation in adding nutrient elements to sites in northern Minnesota. Data from this study is part of a larger effort to determine the effects of mechanized harvesting on the nutrient cycle. Data from the present study indicate that it is unlikely that total yearly precipitation will be able to maintain adequate levels of site productivity on areas that are full-tree harvested. Total yearly nutrient income in lbs/acre was N - 3.9; P - .23; K - 2.29; Ca …

Wood-Rotting Basidiomycetes--Itasca State Park Annotated List, Robert L. Gilbertson, Frances F. Lombard Jan 1976

Wood-Rotting Basidiomycetes--Itasca State Park Annotated List, Robert L. Gilbertson, Frances F. Lombard

Journal of the Minnesota Academy of Science

This study reports 216 species of wood-rotting Basidiomycetes from Lake Itasca State Park in Minnesota. Of these, two species, Gloeocystidiellum heimii Boid. and Phanerochaete cumulodentata (Nikol) Parm., are reported for the first time from North America.
