Cicada flower is a valuable edible and medicinal mushroom. Polysaccharides are the most important active ingredients of cicada flower. This paper reviewed the extraction, separation and purification technologies of cicada flower polysaccharides in recent years. Also, it analyzed the biological activities of cicada flower polysaccharides, such as antioxidant, anti-tumor, immune regulation, bacteriostasis, hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, anti-virus and ease pain. Moreover, the development and application of products were summarized and the existing problems and future research directions were also discussed.

Objective: This study focused on improving the extraction rate and application of Mesona chinensis polysaccharide (MCP). Methods: MCP was obtained from fresh M. chinensis by thermally alkaline extraction, protein removal by trichloroacetic acid and purification by dialysis bag. The chemical structure was analyzed by ultraviolet and infrared spectrum scanning, X-ray diffraction and SEM scanning. The antioxidant activity was determined by in vitro antioxidant capacity, and the antibacterial activity was determined by antibacterial experiment. In order to explore the effect of adding gardenia fruit, a traditional Chinese medicine with dual function of food and medicine, on the quality of yogurt, ferrmentation characteristics and functional properties were investigated. The effects of GE on the number of live bacteria, acidity, water holding capacity and viscosity of yogurt during fermentation were evaluated, and the antibacterial activity, antioxidant activity, lactic acid bacteria's tolerance to simulated gastrointestinal fluid and volatilization were measured after the fermentation was completed. Based on molecular structure and physical and chemical properties, we compare the characteristics of melanin separation and purification by different methods, and summarizes the antioxidation, immunomodulation, radiation protection, antiviral, chelated metal ions, antitumor, organ protection, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of melanin. Biological activities, such as DNA protection, focus on the characteristics and mechanisms of antioxidant, metal chelation, anti-tumor, and radiation protection, and provide guidance for the higher value utilization of melanin.
