Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Three newly recorded gobiid genera of coral-reef gobies have been collected and examined by scuba diving in the Dongsha Atoll, also known as the Pratas Islands, South China Sea. They are Feia Smith, 1959; Sueviota Winterbottom and Hoese, 1988; and Trimmatom Winterbottom and Emery, 1981. These three genera were formerly unrecorded in the Dongsha Atoll and all Taiwanese waters before this paper. One representing species was found for each gobiid genus. The diagnosis for these three newly recorded species and genera will be provided in this paper.

Additions To The Taiwan Eel Fauna With Five Newly Recorded Species Of Moray Eels (Anguilliformes: Muraenidae), And Redescription Of A Rare Species Gymnothorax Sagmacephalus, Kar-Hoe Loh, Kwang-Tsao Shao, Ving-Ching Chong, Hong-Ming Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Five rare moray species: Anarchias cantonensis (Schultz), Gymnothorax dorsalis Seale, G. intesi (Fourmanoir & Rivaton), G. phasmatodes (Smith) and G. sagmacephalus (Böhlke) belonging to the subfamilies Uropterygiinae and Muraeninae are reported for the first time in the surrounding waters off Taiwan. Diagnoses of these five species, including fresh coloration and dentition, are provided. A re-description of G. sagmacephalus is provided since its original description, based on the single holotype, was incomplete specifically due to its damaged tail. With the added 12 specimens, we provided the statistics of the morphological measurements and vertebral formulae, and expanded its geographical distribution from Japan …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The shallow water squat lobster genus Lauriea Baba, 1971 is reported for the first time from Taiwan. The three specimens collected from Kenting, southern Taiwan belong to Lauriea siagiani Baba, 1994. Lauriea siagiani is very distinctive by its striking coloration and having dense long plumose setae on the body. Its report in Taiwan fills the gap of geographical distribution of this species from Indonesia to Japan.

Taxonomic Study Of Pike Congers (Anguilliformes: Muraenesocidae) With Identification Of Muraenesocid Collections In Taiwan, James Lin, Kwang-Tsao Shao, Hong-Ming Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

During the past years, we collected and studied on the Anguilliformes fishes, and described some new genera and new species of eels. We noticed that there are some misidentified species or invalid junior synonym in Muraenesocidae specimens. Considering how limited this family is known in Taiwan, we would like to revise the species of pike congers here. We collected muraenesocid specimens around Taiwan from fish markets, fishery harbors, fishermen, and also examined the specimens from other Taiwanese museum collections. Comparing to the past literature of Muraenesocidae, we found that the species Congresox talabon was misreported previously, and there is not …

One New Record Genus And Three New Record Species Of Snake Eels (Ophichthidae:Anguilliformes) From Taiwan, Yung-Chieh Chiu, James Lin, Hong-Ming Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The tropical and subtropical eel family Ophichthidae are the most diverse Anguilliformes fishes which occupy a variety of marine habitats such as reefs, sand and mud substrates. In Taiwan, we can often collect them from the capture of bottom-trawl fishery. In this study, we added two new recorded species Ophichthus machidai and O. obtusus of ophichthid eels collected from Da-xi fish market by comparing their morphological measurements, vertebral counts and head pores with the other six species of the genus Ophichthus: O. apicalis, O. aphotistos, O. asakusae, O. erabo, O. tsuchidae, O. urolophus. We also obtained a unique specimen from …

The Molecular Phylogeny Of Genus Hemigobius (Teleostei: Gobiidae), With The Comfirmation Of Validity Of Hemigobius Crassa (Herre, 1945), Shih-Pin Huang, I-Shiung Chen, Kwang-Tsao Shao Dec 2013

The Molecular Phylogeny Of Genus Hemigobius (Teleostei: Gobiidae), With The Comfirmation Of Validity Of Hemigobius Crassa (Herre, 1945), Shih-Pin Huang, I-Shiung Chen, Kwang-Tsao Shao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

The genus Hemigobius Bleeker, 1874 is has been regarded as only two valid species in previous study including H. hoevenii (Bleeker, 1851) and H. mingi (Herre, 1936). Traditionally, the both Vaimosa crassa Herre, 1945 and Mugilogobius obliquifasciatus Wu and Ni, 1985 found from Chinese and Taiwanese waters had ever been regarded as the junior synonyms of H. hoevenii. However, our present study have been confirm that H. crassa collected from Hong Kong and Taiwan is a valid species. The H. crassa can be well distinguished from H. hoevenii based on several morphological features. The molecular phylogenetic analysis firstly based on …
