Three Newly Recorded Genera And Species Of Gobiid Fishes (Teleostei: Gobiidae) From The Dongsha Atoll (Pratas Islands), South China Sea, Shao-Liang Hsu, Ta-Kang Liu, Kwang-Tsao Shao, Kuan-Te Chen, I-Shiung Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology

Three newly recorded gobiid genera of coral-reef gobies have been collected and examined by scuba diving in the Dongsha Atoll, also known as the Pratas Islands, South China Sea. They are Feia Smith, 1959; Sueviota Winterbottom and Hoese, 1988; and Trimmatom Winterbottom and Emery, 1981. These three genera were formerly unrecorded in the Dongsha Atoll and all Taiwanese waters before this paper. One representing species was found for each gobiid genus. The diagnosis for these three newly recorded species and genera will be provided in this paper.

The Potential Of Nanosilver As An Antibacterial Agent For Grouper Aquaculture, Zhen-Hao Liao, Chie-Fan Wu, Fan-Hua Nan

This study evaluated the efficacy of nanosilver in grouper aquaculture. The commercial nanosilver solution was trailed for antibacterial activity against Vibrio alginolyticus, one of the most serious threats for grouper survival. The in vitro studies showed that nanosilver possessed Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) value of 8 ppm, Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) value of 16 ppm and Zone of Inhibition (ZOI) of 14 mm (20 g silver loading). This feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of replacement of dietary fishmeal (FM) with a mixture of poultry by-product meal (PBM), fish silage (FS) and fish protein hydrolysate (FPH) on the growth performances of the Asian sea bass Lates calcarifer. Five isonitrogenous (46% crude protein) and isolipidic (12% crude lipid) diets were formulated to replace 0 (CON), 25 (FM 25), 50 (FM 50), 75 (FM 75) and 100% (FM 100) of fishmeal protein with the protein mixture (78% PBM, 11% FS, and 11% FPH). In stock assessment and fisheries management, the standardization of catch per unit effort (CPUE) is critical to derive an effective index of the abundance of exploited fish stocks. Composition And Distribution Of Fish Larvae Surrounding The Upwelling Zone In The Waters Of Northeastern Taiwan In Summer, Yi-Chen Wang, Ming-An Lee

We investigated the species composition and distribution of fish larvae surrounding the upwelling zone in the waters of northeastern Taiwan in July 2011. The surface water had higher temperatures (25.7°C-28.3°C) and lower salinity (33.67-34.05 psu) than did lower water columns. A divergent trend was observed between temperature and salinity in the waters above 80 m. Moreover, we identified a cold-core eddy at the upwelling of the Kuroshio subsurface at waters approximately 60 m beneath the surface. The effects of storage temperature (-20°C, -30°C and -55°C) on selected quality-related characteristics of vacuum packed frozen giant grouper fillets (Epinephelus lanceolatus) stored for 6 months were evaluated. The following quality attributes were measured: proximate composition, pH, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value, total volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), ATP related compounds, K value, microbiological analysis, color, texture and sensory evaluation. Formation of TBA was low in the giant grouper fillet, with a value of less than 3.91 mg malondialdehyde (MDA) kg-1, after 6 months storage at -30 and -55°C. This study investigated the effect of using Mortierella alpina meal (MAM) as a dietary arachidonic acid (ARA) source on the growth, whole-body fatty acid composition, and ARA retention of the orange-spotted grouper (Epinephelus coioides). Four diets supplemented with 0% (control), 1%, 2%, and 5% MAM actually contained 0.93%, 1.14%, 1.34%, and 1.93% ARA. Sex steroids play a crucial role in gonadal sex differentiation in many nonmammalian vertebrates, including hermaphroditic teleosts. The current study investigates the mRNA expression levels of gonadal cyp19a1a, dmrt1, sf-1, dax-1 and 11β-hsd in the protogynous orange-spotted grouper, Epinephelus coioides, at certain stages during sex differentiation and sex change. Among the genes whose mRNA levels were determined through quantitative RT-PCR analysis, cyp19a1a was predominantly expressed in the ovary, and its expression was much lower in the testis. This study investigated the effects of different dietary protein sources on the growth performance and muscle composition of the rock porgy, Oplegnathus fasciatus. Four isonitrogenous (48% crude protein) and isolipidic (10% crude lipid) diets were formulated with Peruvian fishmeal (PFM), Taiwanese fishmeal (TFM), poultry by-product meal (PBM) and meat and bone meal (MBM), respectively. Tank hygiene is an essential aspect for successful fingerling production but can involve substantial workload to maintain. The purpose of this research is to develop and test a new version of a flow-driven, self-rotating tank deposit remover to automatically and quickly remove the deposit for grouper nurseries. The deposit remover has a suction tube lying on the bottom of the tank. Water flowing through the suction tube drives a propeller to rotate the tube while sucking up the solids on the bottom. We aimed to investigate biofouling characteristics on the surfaces of adsorbents and reservoirs used for lithium recovery from seawater. Three types of adsorbents (type 1, 2 m sphere-shaped; type 2, 2 mm circular; and type 3, 2 mm rod-shaped) and a reservoir (polyurethane sponge) were immersed in seawater for 30 days. Biofouling on the surface of adsorbents and the reservoir was initiated by Vibrio, Alteromonas, and Pseudoalteromonas, suggesting that primary colonization of Gammaproteobacteria was an important feature of the biofouling on the surface. The present study investigated changes in the winter abundance and composition of anchovy larvae associated with hydrological conditions in the coastal waters of Tanshui, Taiwan. A survey during the period of 2008-2014 revealed that the abundance of larvae caught using fyke nets varied from 123.9 to 28,314 ind/1000 m3 , whereas the surface water temperature and salinity ranged from approximately 17C to 18C and 32.84 psu to 33.72 psu, respectively. Using incubation experiments with size-fractionated coastal waters, this study calculated the growth and loss rates of nanoflagellates in a coastal ecosystem of the subtropical western Pacific along a rocky shore in northeastern Taiwan. Samples were taken monthly from September 2014 to August 2015. Seasonal variations in growth rates of heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and pigmented nanoflagellates (PNF) ranged from 0.17 to 1.13 d-1 and 0.05 to 1.21 d-1, respectively. Ocean color optic remote sensing has been used to estimate various biogeochemical constituents to monitor ocean environmental changes in coastal regions and global open oceans. However, the most problematic issue in utilizing ocean color measurements is cloud coverage. Thus, this study introduces a neural network (NN) algorithm to derive Chlorophyll a (Chl) concentrations, which are unavailable due to the presence of clouds. Acoustic methods can be used to assess seaweed meadows. The accuracy of the methods is a key factor in the estimation of seaweed distribution and conditions. We obtained and verified thickness and spatial distribution values measured using an echosounder. We determined the thickness of seaweed growing in the coastal waters off Higashidoori-mura, Aomori, Japan on June 5-6, 2013. This study examined how different processing conditions affected the antibacterial activity of epinecidin-1 alone or in combination with deionized distilled water or KY jelly and evaluated its activity against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a product development pipeline. High temperature and γ-irradiation (25 kGy) decreased antimicrobial activity of epinecidin-1, as determined by measuring minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimal bactericidal concentrations (MBCs). However, epinecidin-1 exhibited high antimicrobial activity under low pH conditions. In this study, information on landform change in Baramarae tidal flat, Korea is analyzed using multi-temporal Landsat images and grain size measurement data. Unlike previous studies that focused on the extraction of topographic changes from intertidal digital elevation models (DEMs), information on landform change is assessed in the present study by considering both topography and surface sediment characteristics. This study evaluated the impact of climate change on the water supply of the Shihmen reservoir in northern Taiwan. Five downscaled general circulation models that represent the daily meteorological data of 2046-2065 were adopted. The future inflow of the Shihmen reservoir was estimated using the tank model. Subsequently, the water supply risk under the given demand and operating conditions was simulated and assessed. Compared with 2004-2011, the average annual precipitation of the Shihmen watershed in 2046-2065 is lower, particularly during the wet season (May-October). To promote sustainable development, the Coastal Zone Management Act prescribes that coastal areas should be divided into two levels of protection zones. However, the complexity and variety of coastal defenses and land use cannot be described completely by using these two levels alone. Coastal risk maps, based on natural and manmade characters of a region, showing different degrees of vulnerability and hazard potentials, can aid in making decisions. This study investigated the sublethal concentration of lead and calcium levels in yellowfin seabream juvenile (Acanthopagrus latus) (4.367 ± 0.470 cm; 1.408± 0.478 g) following exposure to a series of lead concentrations at various salinities (0‰, 9‰, 17‰, 25‰ and 34‰). Yellowfin seabream juveniles exposed to 17‰ salinity were the most tolerant to lead. After 96-h, the 50% lethal concentration (LC50) values were 0.33, 1.43, 3.78, 2.32 and 1.46 mg Pb2+ /L following exposure to 0‰, 9‰, 17‰, 25‰ and 34‰ salinities, respectively. Tilapia skin gelatin powder was used to parpare shark fin analogs. Experimental samples were exposed to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation at 612, 1224, 1836, 2448, 3060, and 3672 mJ/cm2 . Fish gelatin exposed to UV at 1836 mJ/cm2 became partially insoluble. UV exposure reduced the transmittance of amide I at 1630 cm-1, amide II at 1480-1575 cm-1, and amide III at 1237 cm-1 in Fourier transform infrared spectra. UV treatment at 612 mJ/cm2 significantly reduced the gel strength of fish gelatin, whereas higher UV exposure increased the gel strength. Grouper iridovirus of Taiwan (TGIV) is one of the most devastating infectious pathogens of grouper fry in Taiwan. As environmental temperature often plays an important role in the outbreak of diseases, we assayed the impact of different temperatures (18, 25 and 32℃) on TGIV infection both in vitro and in vivo. Cytopathic effect (CPE) characterized as cell rounding and lysis were observed in TGIV-infected grouper SB (swim bladder) cells at 25℃ and 32℃, but was absent at 18℃. This experiment aims to estimate the median lethal doses (LD50) of irradiation (IR) for the matured freshwater oviparous ornamental fish, Sulawesi medaka (Oryzias woworae). Both male and female were treated with 0, 10, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 60, 200,400, 600 and 800 Gy. Each treatment was conducted in triplicate. The 96, 168 and 336 h- LD50 of male and female were 643.1, 47.0, 33.8 and 646.8, 42.5, 35.7 Gy, respectively.

Five rare moray species: Anarchias cantonensis (Schultz), Gymnothorax dorsalis Seale, G. intesi (Fourmanoir & Rivaton), G. phasmatodes (Smith) and G. sagmacephalus (Böhlke) belonging to the subfamilies Uropterygiinae and Muraeninae are reported for the first time in the surrounding waters off Taiwan. Diagnoses of these five species, including fresh coloration and dentition, are provided. A re-description of G. sagmacephalus is provided since its original description, based on the single holotype, was incomplete specifically due to its damaged tail. Analysis of costs and returns for the tiger shrimp farming industry in Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam was carried out by considering different production scales. The production scale influenced not only the cost but also the profitability. Through the results of multivariate statistical analyses, this study showed that the production cost, benefit and earning capacity varied from extensive to semi-intensive and finally to intensive systems. By means of Cobb-Douglas production function analysis, it is revealed that net revenue from increasing the production scale would increase if the input intensities of the fixed, seed and feed costs rose.
