Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are a devastating ecological and economic consequence of the abundance of nutrient-rich agricultural runoff entering aquatic ecosystems (Baker et al. 2014). Bio-available phosphorus from synthetic fertilizers is one of the major nutrients contributing to this global issue. Previous studies indicated that dissolved phosphorus can be removed from an aqueous environment when passed through a composite mixture of granular steel wool particles and activated carbon (Erickson, Gulliver, and Weiss, 2007). Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a stroke characterized by bleeding into the subarachnoid space of the brain, typically resulting in high mortality rate.8 Delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), characterized by vasospasms induced arterial constriction, occurs in roughly one third of the surviving patients.20 The development of DCI and neurodegeneration could be linked to metabolic pathology that occurs after SAH, specifically iron induced changes in redox status. Bats have humeri and femora that are poorly vascularized or avascular compared to birds, with only larger bats typically displaying vascular canals. Vascular canals provide passageways for blood vessels and nerves, which help maintain bone homeostasis, and support bones by resisting torsional stresses placed on them. The presence of a greater number of canals in large bats suggests that they may have a larger need for the support of nutrient and waste exchange than their dense lacunar-canalicular system can provide on its own. In nature, salamanders adapted to terrestrial and aquatic environments as well as varying substrate conditions in their habitats. Discovering more about the effects of substrate types on the kinematic measurements of underwater walking can offer us with more information regarding biological principles and limb evolution. A previous study conducted on the same salamander subjects led us to believe that a rough substrate such as gravel will provide the salamander with better traction and grip to thrust forward for walking underwater compared to a smooth substrate. One area that required new material at The University of Akron was the Principles of Biology II course, specifically in the laboratory section. A new laboratory module was created and centered around hormone signaling in Arabidopsis thaliana. Brassinosteroid mutants were used to show students the event hormones had on plants. The purpose of this research experiment was to determine the effects of acute hypoxia on the embryonic zebrafish (Danio rerio) cardiovascular system and assess the critical oxygen level at which embryonic function is compromised. This goal was achieved by exposing embryos to decreasing oxygen concentrations, (6.0 mg/L-0 mg/L) and observing the heart under an inverted microscope. Data analysis was conducted to determine end systolic volume, end diastolic volume, stroke volume, heart rate, and cardiac output. G coupled protein receptors (GCPR) are one of the largest families of receptors and mediate a variety of biological responses. Rhodopsin is the largest family and aids in sight, the α-subunit of the GCPR complex in extremely important to the activation and downstream signaling effects of GCPR. The α-subunit contains a small trans-domain portion and in this project the sequence of that portion will be inserted into a vector containing a fluorescent tag. Osteocytes, the most ubiquitous bone cell type, are responsible for bone maintenance and communication as well as mechanotransduction. Osteocytes reside in spaces within the bone matrix called lacunae, which are used as a proxy for the cells themselves in X-ray imaging. Previous studies have revealed that lacunar volume was reduced in females with increasing age, thus likely contributing to bone frailty and diseases such as osteoporosis. The research project focused on evaluating 3 different factors in creating a plant hormone lab module for Principles of Biology II lab. The main hormone of focus was brassinosteroid. In the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, brassinosteroids promote cell elongation, cell division, root growth, and seed germination. Three goals were established to create the most efficient lab module possible. First, mutant (bes1,bri1) root length was assessed without addition of brassinolide (BL), a synthetic brassinosteroid. The objective of this research project was to optimize a laboratory technique for visualizing primary cilia in musculoskeletal tissue of young swine, specifically the growth plate of long bones. This was accomplished through varying fixation procedures, antigen retrieval methods, antibody concentrations, and incubation times. By varying these parameters, a reproducible procedure was developed to examine the primary cilia in multiple tissues including ligament, fascia, and growth plate. This experiment introduced variances in fixation methods, with methanol or formalin. Paraffin and frozen embedding techniques were also varied for comparison with regards to cilia visualization. This study explored the relationship between age, sex and bone microarchitecture. Using high-resolution images, we may better understand the factors affecting different aspects of bone microstructure. Statistical support was provided for the quantitative differences in bone microarchitecture between the sexes. The significant differences noted in Canal Volume (Ca.V), Cortical Porosity (Ca.V/TV), Canal Surface (Ca.S) and Canal Surface to Tissue Volume (Ca.S/TV) offer several interesting points when compared with pre-existing literature. All four parameters listed above that reported significance did so with respect to sex, in that each parameter differed between sexes.

Osteoinductive therapeutic strategies are essential for the bone healing process and are applicable in multiple orthopaedic procedures. The novel protein Osteoactivin (OA) has proven to stimulate osteoblast differentiation and function in vitro and bone regeneration in vivo in the rat model. More recently, OA has shown significant bone regeneration ability in sheep. The goal of this study is the comparison of osteoactivin with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) in the rat spinal fusion model.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify any correlation between quality of life and adaptive sport participation in individuals with disability. Methods: A questionnaire including the World Health Organization’s Quality of Life - BREF questionnaire and an adaptive sports impact questionnaire were electronically distributed to adults participating in an adaptive sport program. Athletes participating in the adaptive sport program’s wheelchair rugby team completed skill assessments that were examined for changes in physical domain. Results: All participants (n=11) rated their quality of life good or very good. Participants performed best in the environmental and physical domains of the WHOQOL-BREF. …

An M1 melanopsin retinal ganglion cell (mRGC) is a subtype of the five melanopsin ganglion cells. The M1-type mRGC is distributed on the dorsal retina of a mouse and has an extensively overlapping dendritic network in both the sublamina a (OFF) and sublamina b (ON) layers of the inner plexiform layer. In the dorsal retina, the M1-type mRGCs are distinct and asymmetric.
