Revision Of Common Snipe, Gallinago Gallinago In Morphometric Analysis And Buildingthe Standard Reference Haematological Values For Further Studies, Ahmad Waheed, Kamran Jafar, Muhammad Saleem Khan, Muhammad Wajid, Shamoon Ali, Muhammad Waseem Aslam, Shabbir Ahmad

Turkish Journal of Zoology

This study was designed to record some morphometric and haematological parameters of common snipe, Gallinago gallinago. For this purpose, 20 individuals (10 male, 10 female) were collected from the wetlands of District Bahawalnagar, Punjab, Pakistan. Significant differences between the sexes were recorded in tail length, length of longest primary feather, and chest circumference. . No significant difference was recorded in haematological parameters between the sexes. Gut analysis revealed that common snipe feed mostly on Chironomidae and Ceratopogonidae larvae and male and female snipes have the same food preference.

Ecomorphological Associations And Abundance Of Birds Across The Agricultural Landscape Of Pothwar Plateau, Pakistan, Misbah Sarwar, Iftikhar Hussain Jan 2018

Ecomorphological Associations And Abundance Of Birds Across The Agricultural Landscape Of Pothwar Plateau, Pakistan, Misbah Sarwar, Iftikhar Hussain

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Some species are exceptionally common in landscapes heavily impacted by humans, such as agricultural lands. This study was carried out over a period of 2 years (July 2012 to June 2014) in the arid agricultural landscape of Pothwar Plateau, Pakistan, to identify adaptations that govern bird distribution and abundance across 2 different cropping systems associated with differences in water availability. We used regular surveys and foraging observations to quantify species abundance, distribution, and habits. We then examined morphological correlations with ecological attributes. We found the following: (1) larger birds tended to spend more time in trees; (2) birds with small …

Diet Selection Of Snow Leopard (Panthera Uncia) In Chitral, Pakistan, Rukhsana Khatoon, Iftikhar Hussain, Maqsood Anwar, Muhammad Ali Nawaz Jan 2017

Diet Selection Of Snow Leopard (Panthera Uncia) In Chitral, Pakistan, Rukhsana Khatoon, Iftikhar Hussain, Maqsood Anwar, Muhammad Ali Nawaz

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is an elusive endangered carnivore found in remote mountain regions of Central Asia, with sparse distribution in northern Pakistan, including Chitral and Baltistan. The present study determined the food habits of snow leopard, including preferred prey species and seasonal variation in diet. Fifty-six scat samples were collected and analyzed to determine the diet composition in two different seasons, i.e. summer and winter. Hair characteristics such as cuticular scale patterns and medullary structure were used to identify the prey. This evidence was further substantiated from the remains of bones, claws, feathers, and other undigested remains found in …

Characterization Of Interferon Alpha Of Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I In Punjab Urial (Ovis Vignei Punjabiensis), Tanveer Hussain, Muneeb Musthafa, Masroor Ellahi Babar, Atiya Yasmeen, Asif Nadeem, Nisar Ahmad, Faiz Marikar

Turkish Journal of Zoology

We have characterized the endangered Punjab urial via its interferon alpha-A gene. DNA extraction was done from blood, followed by PCR and sequencing using a 3130xl genetic analyzer. Single nucleotide polymorphism and phylogenetic analyses were performed with BioEdit 7.0.9.0 and MEGA 6.1. The highly polymorphic nature revealed will lead to identifying molecular markers for breeding purposes.

First Report Of The Genus Brachylaima Dujardin, 1843 (Trematoda: Brachylaimidae)From The Small Intestine Of Common Myna (Acridotheres Tristis) Of District Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, Suleman Suleman, Mian Sayed Khan

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Forty common mynas (Acridotheres tristis) of district Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, were examined for digenetic trematodes. Two specimens of the genus Brachylaima Dujardin, 1843 were recovered from the small intestine of two hosts collected from different sites. Permanent slides of the flukes were prepared and the specimens were studied in detail. The trematodes were identified as Brachylaima fuscatum (Rudolphi, 1819) and Brachylaima sabahense Fischthal & Kuntz, 1974. It is the first report of the genus Brachylaima from a Pakistani bird and Acridotheres tristis represents a new host record for each of the recovered species.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The early developmental stages of the Pisidae crab, Doclea muricata (Herbst, 1788), and the Epialtidae crab, Acanthonyx limbatus (A. Milne Edwards, 1862), from Pakistan are described for the first time. Zoeae I and II of Doclea muricata and Acanthonyx limbatus were obtained from field-collected ovigerous females that were kept under laboratory conditions. These larval stages are described, illustrated, and compared with those of earlier studies of known species of the genera. The larval stages of these 2 species can be differentiated by the presence of spines on the posterolateral angles of abdominal somites 3-5 and a pair of lateral spines …
