Proteomic Analysis Reveals Different Responses To Drought Between The Cleome Spinosa (C3) And Cleome Gynandra (C4), Mustafa Yildiz, Fadi̇mana Kaya, Hakan Terzi̇

Turkish Journal of Botany

The global emergence of low water availability causes extensive damage to crops in many regions. Although the responses of plants to drought stress have been extensively investigated, molecular studies on plants with different carboxylation pathways are limited. Therefore, we aimed to identify quantitative differences in proteins functioning in differential drought tolerance of C3 (Cleome spinosa) and C4 (C. gynandra) species. Proteomic analysis functionally characterized 33 differentially accumulated proteins in C. spinosa and 15 proteins in C. gynandra leaves. The identified proteins were involved in multiple aspects of leaf metabolism such as photosynthesis, energy metabolism, protein metabolism, and stress defense. The …

Evaluation Of Metabolite Extraction Protocols And Determination Ofphysiological Response To Drought Stress Via Reporter Metabolites In Model Plant Brachypodium Distachyon, Özge Tatli, İlkem Emrah Ni̇kerel, Bahar Soğutmaz Özdemi̇r

Turkish Journal of Botany

Metabolomics aims to systematically gather (quantitative) information on metabolites in the cell and is commonly viewed as the "missing link" between genomics, transcriptomics, and physiology. Typical metabolomics platforms consist of two main steps, the quenching and extraction of metabolites from plant material and the (un)targeted quantification of the extracted metabolites. Brachypodium distachyon, a native grass species of the Mediterranean region, is an attractive model plant to study temperate crops. In recent years, despite an increasing interest in genomic and transcriptomic studies, metabolomics studies for B. Distachyon are still in their infancy. Drought, an abiotic stress factor, causes severe loss in …

Activated Expression Of Eshd1 Enhances Drought Tolerance In Tobacco Plants Via Mitigation Of Reactive Oxygen Species-Mediated Membrane Damage, Cheng Zhou, Zhongyou Ma, Lin Zhu, Jiansheng Guo, Xianghuan Cui, Jian Zhu, Jianfei Wang

Turkish Journal of Botany

It is well documented that the homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-Zip) transcription factors play diverse roles during plant growth and development. The Class I HD-Zip genes are shown to be involved in the regulation of abiotic stress responses and tolerance. Herein, a novel Class I HD-Zip gene, EsHD1, was isolated from Eutrema salsugineum, and an investigation was performed of its physiological functions in response to drought stress. The analyses of gene expression profiles revealed that the EsHD1 transcripts quickly accumulated upon exposure to various abiotic stress conditions or abscisic acid treatments. Furthermore, the overexpression of EsHD1 in tobacco plants conferred improved tolerance …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Drought stress is one of the growing concerns in agriculture management around the world. Adopting tolerant plants to drought conditions could be an appropriate approach to this problem. Bunium persicum is one of the most important medicinal plants of Iran and Turkey as well as neighbouring countries and has been forced into endangered plant status due to mismanagement of its wild habitats. An experiment was conducted in order to evaluate drought tolerance of Bunium persicum and the effects of drought on its essential oil qualitative properties. Two separate plans based on randomised complete block design were performed with 4 drought …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Drought stress is considered a restricting factor for plant products; therefore many compounds were applied to minimise the harmful effects of stress. One type of these compounds that have antioxidative characteristics is brassinosteroids. In this experiment, when 4 fully expanded leaves of tomato plants appeared, 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL) was sprayed onto the leaves at 0.01 and 1 µM concentrations for 3 days with a 1-day interval. Three levels of drought stress (0, 3, and 5 days withholding water) were applied. Thereafter, the effects of brassinosteroids and water stress were investigated on some biochemical and antioxidative parameters of tomato plants. Lipid peroxidation, …
