Phenotypic Evaluation Of Transgenic Peas (Pisum Sativum L.) Harboring Atnhx1 Demonstrates Stable Gene Expression And Conserved Morphology In Subsequent Generations, Zahid Ali, Wajeeha Saeed, Saadia Naseem, Faheem Ahmad, Ahmed Akrem, Nighat Yasmeen, Hans Joerg Jacobsen

Turkish Journal of Botany

In recent years, transgenic approaches have played a significant role in improving traits that help plants overcome abiotic stresses. Combined gene discovery and functional genomics have helped identify diversified mechanisms and gene families, which improved productivity under various abiotic stresses. We report on the genetic stability and persistent morphological features of transgenic pea (Pisum sativum L.) plants harboring the dicistronic vector construct pG0229MASnhx1/luc over five generations. In addition to salt stress tolerance, the transgenic plants showed frost tolerance compared to wild-type (WT) plants. Frost tolerance of AtNHX1 transgenic pea plants was unexpected and needs further investigation. We report morphological and …

Interpopulation Variations In Morphochemical Characteristics Of Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni, Neena Kumari, Ravinder Raina, Yash Pal Sharma Jan 2018

Interpopulation Variations In Morphochemical Characteristics Of Stevia Rebaudiana Bertoni, Neena Kumari, Ravinder Raina, Yash Pal Sharma

Turkish Journal of Botany

The present study was carried out with an aim to evaluate Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni segregants and to characterize them morphochemically to facilitate selection of superior genotypes for hybridization in breeding programs. Two identified strains named A and B and their segregant populations (F1 and F2) were evaluated with their morphological and chemical characteristics. Various qualitative and quantitative morphological characters including leaf shape, plant type (loose or compact), plant habit, plant height, and shoot collar diameter were considered. Simultaneously stevioside and rebaudioside-A content was evaluated. A few individuals were identified with rebaudioside-A content ranging from 5.11% to 8.55% and the ratio …

Seed Structure Of Some Taxa Of The Genus Crocus L. (Iridaceae) Series Crocus, Mehmet Cengi̇z Karai̇smai̇loğlu, Levent Şik, Almila Gemi̇ci̇oğlu, Osman Erol Jan 2018

Seed Structure Of Some Taxa Of The Genus Crocus L. (Iridaceae) Series Crocus, Mehmet Cengi̇z Karai̇smai̇loğlu, Levent Şik, Almila Gemi̇ci̇oğlu, Osman Erol

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, the macro- and micromorphological seed characteristics of the genus Crocus L. series Crocus taxa, including C. pallasii , C. turcicus , C. dispathaceus , C. asumaniae , C. mathewii , C. thomasii , C. oreocreticus , and C. cartwrightianus , were observed. Morphological characteristics, such as the size, shape, color, and seed surface structures, were analyzed using stereo and scanning electron microscopes. Testa layer structures including the outer and inner testae, phytomelan layer structure and thickness, and seed endosperm cell features were studied. Differences in the seed, raphe size, seed surface patterns, inner testa features, and phytomelan …

Phenetic Assessment Among Heliotropium L. S.L. Species, Azza El-Hadidy, Asmaa Olwey, Salah El-Naggar

Turkish Journal of Botany

Genus Heliotropium L. (Boraginaceae s.l . ) is one of the difficult taxonomic complexes. The validity of phenetic investigations is often questioned in contrast to the modern phylogenetic approaches. In this study, 120 different populations of 17 Heliotropium taxa were analyzed, using 169 macro- and micromorphological characters to assess the phenetic relationships between taxa. The macromorphology of all parts of the studied taxa (vegetative, floral, and fruit) was investigated, along with some micromorphological characters including indumentum and anatomy. The most significant characters were calyx asymmetry, corolla color and lobe shape, anther connation in young flowers, staminal connective tissue prolongation, shape …

Boletus Himalayensis (Basidiomycota; Boletales), A New Porcini Species From Pakistan, Samina Sarwar, Sana Jabeen, Ishtiaq Ahmad, Bryn Dentinger, Abdul Nasir Khalid Jan 2018

Boletus Himalayensis (Basidiomycota; Boletales), A New Porcini Species From Pakistan, Samina Sarwar, Sana Jabeen, Ishtiaq Ahmad, Bryn Dentinger, Abdul Nasir Khalid

Turkish Journal of Botany

Morphology and phylogenetic analyses using the ITS and LSU regions of nrDNA were carried out on bolete collections belonging to Boletus s. str., originating from the Himalayan region of Pakistan. The phylogenetic analysis outlined the existence of previously unknown species of this genus. It is described here as Boletus himalayensis . Illustrations of the macroscopic characters and the microscopic features of the new species are provided. The distinction of B. himalayensis from allied species is discussed.
