Trace Metal Contents Of Some Wild-Growing Mushrooms In Bigadiç (Balıkesir), Turkey, İsmai̇l Şen, Hakan Alli, Beki̇r Çöl, Mustafa Çeli̇kkollu, Ahmet Balci

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, heavy metal (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, and Zn) contents of wild-growing mushrooms and soil samples collected from Bigadiç (Balıkesir) were determined. A total of 38 fungal taxa were found in the study area. Among the mushroom samples analysed, minimum and maximum metal contents were 0.11-2.58 mg kg^-1 for Cd, 1.01-19.55 mg kg^-1 for Cr, 2.61-72.44 mg kg^-1 for Cu, 1.38-47.52 mg kg^-1 for Mn, and 5.75-97.55 mg kg^-1 for Zn. For all elements, values are within the acceptable levels as reported by several researchers. Hohenbuehelia petaloides (Bull.) Schulzer had the lowest elemental composition for all elements. The Bryophyte Flora Of The Western Part Of The Küre Mountains (Bartın, Kastamonu), Turkey, Muhammet Ören, Güray Uyar, Tamer Keçeli̇

Turkish Journal of Botany

This study presents the bryophyte flora of the western part of the Küre Mountains, situated in A2 square in the grid system adopted by Henderson, and entirely within the Euro-Siberian phytogeographic region. A total of 1545 bryophyte specimens were collected from the research area in 2008 and 2009. According to the results of this study, 272 taxa belonging to 146 genera and 60 families were recorded. Of these, 2 taxa are hornworts, 53 taxa are liverworts, and 217 taxa are mosses. Aloe vera L. is a valuable medicinal plant and is currently used in pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries worldwide. In the present study, the effect of various concentrations of Aloe vera leaf gel extracts was investigated on mitotic and phase indexes of Allium cepa L. root tip cells for 24 and 48 h durations. The EC_{50} value of gel extracts was found to be 20% and was used to determine the experimental concentrations. We investigated the relationship between leaf age and trichome/stomata densities in the snake tomato (Trichosanthes cucumerina L.). In a second experiment, the effects of different salinity levels on trichome and stomatal densities and their micromorphology were investigated. The leaf age investigation utilised young, semiold, and old leaves, while the salinity study utilised 0, 60, 120, and 180 mM NaCl for the investigation. Two morphotypes (Variant --Green and Variant B-Light Green) of T. cucumerina were used for the salinity experiment while only Variant B-Light Green was used for the leaf age investigation. We investigated the role of antioxidant compounds (e.g.,\alpha-tocopherol, phytochelatins, glutathione, and other non-protein thiols) in the cadmium (Cd) tolerance of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L. cv. Arak2811) seedlings exposed to different concentrations of Cd (0-100 \muM) for a week. A concentration- and tissue- dependent response to Cd was observed. Increasing Cd supply markedly reduced the dry weight of roots. Plants accumulated a substantial amount of Cd, especially in the roots. Levels of \alpha-tocopherol showed a significant increase with an increase in the concentration of Cd in leaves. Primula × uzungolensis Terzioğlu & Coşkunçelebi, a natural hybrid from north-eastern Anatolia, is described and illustrated with its parents. Based on its morphology and molecular characteristics, we conclude that P. × uzungolensis is a new natural hybrid between P. acaulis (L.) Hill subsp. rubra (Sm.) Greuter & Burdet and P. veris L. subsp. columnae (Ten.) Maire & Petitmengin. Maximum parsimony (MP) analysis based on nuclear ribosomal DNA (nrDNA) and chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) shows that P. veris subsp. columnae is the maternal parent of the putative hybrid, and the hybridisation between P. veris subsp. columnae and P. acaulis subsp. rubra is …

Phenolic compounds function as stress indicators because they accumulate to high levels in many plant tissues in response to a wide range of biotic and abiotic signals. These compounds are involved in pollen development, pollination, pollen germination, and pollen tube growth. The mature pollen grains of Spartium junceum L., Lagerstroemia indica L., Thuja orientalis L., and Petunia hybrida L. collected from control (less polluted) and polluted areas [mainly SO_2, NO_2, CO, hydrocarbons (HC), and airborne particulate material (APM)]. Fifteen species of corticioid fungi with heterobasidia are recorded from the forests in the middle of the Seversky Donets River basin (eastern Ukraine) from 2007 to 2011. Of them, 11 species are new to Ukraine. Eryngium babadaghensis G.Ecevit-Genç, E.Akalın & A.Wörz sp. nova (Apiaceae, Saniculoideae) is described as a new species from the Babadağ (Fethiye-Muğla) in south-west Turkey. The new species is closely related to E. kotschyi Boiss., which is endemic to Turkey. A Latin diagnosis; taxonomic descriptions; photos of the holotype, fruit, and transverse sections of the basal leaves, peduncles, and fruits; and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the calyx and surface of the scales on the mericarp of the new species are presented. Peduncle anatomy was investigated in 20 species of Onobrychis Miller sect. Heliobrychis Bunge from Iran by light microscopy. Ten quantitative and qualitative characters were studied in the peduncle cross sections. Results showed that qualitative characters represent considerable variations within the section, some of which such as outline shape of the peduncle cross section, density of papillae on hair surface, and position of cavities in peduncles are taxonomically important characters to differ annual species from perennials in the section. Salt stress is an important environmental stress. Plants cope with salt stress with different strategies. In this study the effects of 2 different arbuscular mycorrhiza species (Glomus mosseae and G. intraradices) on some biochemical parameters in pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L. cv. Cumaovası) exposed to long term salt stress were studied. It was found that mycorrhizal inoculation increased RWC, P, total chlorophyll, and carotenoid content of pepper plants during salt application. An experiment was conducted at the University Agricultural Research Farm to study the effect of inoculation with biological nitrogen fixers on growth and yield of chilli (Capsicum annum L.) cv. "Pusa Jawala" in relation to disease incidence caused by plant-parasitic nematodes. The growth, yield, and quality parameters of chilli increased significantly with the inoculation of biological nitrogen fixers using Azospirillum and Azotobacter. Performance of Azospirillum was found better as compared to Azotobacter. Macrofungi Distribution Of Cocakdere Valley (Arslanköy, Mersin), Hasan Hüseyi̇n Doğan, Si̇nan Aktaş, Celaleddi̇n Öztürk, Giyasetti̇n Kaşik

The present study reports on species of macrofungi collected from 2002 to 2005 in Cocakdere valley in the central Taurus mountains. This area is protected and is one of the important plant areas in Turkey. In the field and during laboratory studies 186 taxa belonging 2 divisions and 44 families were identified. Among them, 6 families and 10 species belong to Ascomycota, and 38 families and 186 species belong to Basidiomycota. Moreover, 4 taxa-Cortinarius aureifolius, Inocybe hygrophorus, Ramaria suecica, and Scytinostroma portentosum -were found in the Turkish mycobiota for the first time.

Symphytum anatolicum Boiss. is an endemic species in the Flora of Turkey and the East Aegean Islands. It was first collected by d'Urville on the island of Cos in 1820 and named Symphytum asperrimum d'Urv. The plant was again collected by Boissier near İzmir (Smyrna) in 1842, and described by him as S. anatolicum in 1844. There are 4 collections mentioned in the protologue in Boissier's Flora Orientalis (1879). The herbarium specimen "Hab. in umbrosis montium circa Smyrnam", housed in G-Boiss. Herbarium, was chosen as lectotype as it best represents the species description.

The current conservation status of the Salvia L. (sage) taxa of the family Lamiaceae distributed in the East, South-East, Central, North Anatolian, and Marmara geographic regions of Turkey was reassessed at regional, national, and global levels using IUCN Red List categories and criteria. In accordance with the present taxonomic revision of the genus since 2005, the study area seems to cover 79 taxa, 36 of which are endemic and 4 of which are rare nonendemic; the remaining 39 taxa are widely distributed. Ornithogalum malatyanum Mutlu is described as a new species from Malatya Province, East Anatolia, Turkey. A description, photographs, and an identification key including related species are given. The International Union for Conservation of Nature threat category and observations on the ecology of the populations are noted. The chromosome number of the new species is 2n = 24. The morphological differences between the new species and related taxa are also discussed.

Gypsophila turcica Hamzaoğlu is described as a new species. The specimen was collected from gypsaceous hills, at an altitude between 1755 and 1835 m from Zara District (Sivas Province). The new species is similar to Gypsophila festucifolia Hub.-Mor. The differences between these 2 taxa are discussed. Moreover, Silene choruhensis Hamzaoğlu nom. nova should replace S. ispirensis A.P.Khokhr. 1997, which is an illegitimate name as a younger homonym of S. ispirensis Boiss. 1856.

This paper provides a description of a new species of Rugaspermum D.D.Pant & Basu, R. minuta Bhowmik & Parveen, from the Nidpur Triassic beds. The dispersed seeds were recovered after macerating large chunks of shale in hydrofluoric acid. The structurally preserved compressed seed is platyspermic, orthotropus, and oval- to barrel-shaped with a short beak-like micropyle. The surfaces of the seeds are wrinkled and there is a wide lateral ridge running from the apex to the base on both the obverse and reverse sides. The epiphytic diversity of lichens associated with Quercus cerris L. and Quercus frainetto Ten. were investigated in 21 localities of the Marmara region. A total of 106 taxa belonging to 49 genera were reported on Q. cerris and Q. frainetto, and 16 of those taxa were recorded for the first time in the Marmara region. The number of lichen species found on Q. cerris was 83, while 85 taxa were found on Q. frainetto. Diatoms are an important group of aquatic ecosystems. To date, there have been many important algological studies in different river basins in Turkey. However, the use of diatoms in biomonitoring (according to diatom indices, Watanabe's or Van Dam's systems) is relatively new in Turkey. Twelve different methods were compared for storage of a newly isolated mushroom strain, Schizophyllum commune Fr. The fungal strain was stored in different media [sterile distilled water (SDW), glycerol (15%) or media including trehalose], in different forms (mycelium-colonised wheat seeds, mycelium-colonised agar plugs) and at different temperatures (+4, +20, -20 °C). The fungal culture was checked periodically for its viability and biological activity for up to 1 year. A Simple Technique For Cross-Sectioning Gymnosperm Needle Leaves Using Microtome, Jukyeong Eo

If a staining-permanent slide is not needed, this simple and faster microtome technique is very useful for cross-sectioning gymnosperm needle leaves. The technique employs 2× polyvinyl alcohol-lactic acid-glycerol (PVLG) without the steps of fixation, dehydration, clearing, embedding, deparaffinisation, and hydration. Conveniently, this technique can also be applied to thick leaves and other organs of angiosperms. The procedure is very simple and is suggested for use in plant anatomy research.
