Turkish Journal of Biology

This study was conducted to investigate the histopathological and biochemical effects of midazolam and etomidate, which are intravenous anesthetics used in surgical operations, on rat liver. There were 3 study groups each consisting of 9 animals: the control, midazolam, and etomidate groups. Midazolam and etomidate were administered 10 times with 1-day intervals. At the end of the study, tissues were taken for histological examination and biochemical analysis. We determined superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the liver. There was a slight increase in MDA level in the midazolam-exposed group when compared with the controls, and this …

The Biochemical And Histoanatomical Response Of Some Woody Species To Anthropic Impact In Suceava County, Romania, Elena Ciornea, Irina Boz, Elena Ionel, Sabina Ioana Cojocaru, Gabriela Dumitru

Turkish Journal of Biology

The use of extractive mining technologies in various areas of Suceava, Romania (C?limani Mountains - sulfur, Tarni?a-Ostra - copper and barite, and Crucea-Botuşana - uranium) has resulted in the accumulation of surplus chemicals with direct action on the ecosystem. The aim of this study was to analyze the possible damage on some woody species (Picea abies L., Populus tremulaL., Salix alba L., Betula verrucosa Ehrh.,and Larix decidua Mill.) and their adaptive and phytoremediation capacity through the biomarkers of oxidative stress and histoanatomical observations. Thus, we determined the total soluble protein concentration and superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase activities. Cross-sections of …

Genome-Wide Distribution Of Superoxide Dismutase (Sod) Gene Families In Sorghum Bicolor, Ertuğrul Fi̇li̇z, Hüseyi̇n Tombuloğlu

Turkish Journal of Biology

Superoxide dismutases (SODs) are critical enzymes protecting cells against toxic superoxide radicals. To date, 3 types of SODs have been identified: Cu-ZnSODs, Fe-MnSODs, and NiSODs. In this study, a genome-wide analysis was performed in Sorghum bicolor to characterize SOD genes and proteins. Using several bioinformatics tools, we characterized a total of 8 SOD genes from the Sorghum genome. Gene structure, chromosomal distribution, tissue specific expression, conserved domain, and phylogenetic analyses of SOD genes were carried out. Additionally, 3-dimensional structures were determined and compared within each SbSOD protein. Chromosomal distributions revealed that the highest number of SOD genes was on chromosomes …

Activity Of Antioxidant Enzymes During Induction Of Morphogenesis Of Fritillaria Meleagris In Bulb Scale Culture, Marija Petric, Sladana Jevremovic, Milana Trifunovic, Vojin Tadic, Snezana Milosevic, Angelina Subotic

Turkish Journal of Biology

We investigated the activity of 3 antioxidant enzymes: superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase during morphogenesis of Fritillaria meleagris L. in vitro in bulb scale culture. Bulb cultures of F. meleagris were established on nutrition medium supplemented with 1.0 mg L^{-1} thidiazuron. Bulbs were grown at standard (24 °C) and low temperatures (4 °C) or at an increased sucrose concentration (4.5%) during the first 6 weeks (pretreatments). All bulbs were then grown for 4 weeks at standard temperature on 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid and kinetin or thidiazuron (at concentrations of 1 mg L^{-1} each) in order to examine the influence of the …

Prothoracicotropic Hormone-Producing Neurosecretory Neurons And Antioxidative Defense In Midgut Of Lymantria Dispar In Trophic Stress, Vesna Peric Mataruga, Milena Vlahovic, Marija Mrdakovic, Dajana Todorovic, Dragana Matic, Anja Gavrilovic, Larisa Ilijin

Turkish Journal of Biology

As a very invasive insect species, Lymantria dispar is adaptable and sensitive to a changing environment. In insects the neuroendocrine system first reacts to stress by production of prothoracicotropic neurohormones (PTTH) that control ecdysteroid synthesis (morphogenetic and stress hormones). In this article, we report changes in the L2' brain neurosecretory neurons that synthesize PTTH in L. dispar larvae after feeding on locust tree leaves (Robinia pseudoacacia), an unsuitable host plant. Groups of larvae (n = 20 per experimental group) were offered this in comparison with oak leaves (Quercus robur), a suitable control diet, for 3 days after molting into the …

Effect Of Salinity On Growth Chemical Composition And Antioxidative Enzyme Activity Of Two Malting Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.) Cultivars, Mehmet Ali̇ Demi̇ral, Mehmet Aydin, Alper Yorulmaz

Turkish Journal of Biology

The effects of salinity on the growth, chemical composition and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POX) activities of 2 malting barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivars (Kaya and Scarlet) were studied. In 10-day-old seedlings, salinity stress was initiated by applying an appropriate amount of NaCl to water, and it lasted for 30 days. Salinity decreased growth of the cultivars significantly. Scarlet restricted entry of Na^+ and Cl^- into root and translocation to leaves more efficiently than did Kaya. As a whole Scarlet produced a higher amount total chlorophyll under salinity than did Kaya. POX activity of the cultivars decreased with salinity …
