Plant Nutrient Contents And Spatial Distribution Patterns Of Toxic Element Concentrations In Mine Site Soils, Gülşen Tozsi̇n, Taşkin Öztaş

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Open-pit coal mining causes land and soil degradation and negatively affects soil properties. It is of great importance to determine variabilities in soil properties of the abandoned area after the mine is closed and to bring it back to nature by implementing appropriate rehabilitation programs. The aim of this study was to evaluate plant nutrient availability and toxic element pollution in an abandoned coal mine site. The results indicated that the amounts of plant-available P and K are quite low (<90 kg P2O5 ha-1) and low to moderate (<170 kg K2O ha-1), respectively. The concentrations …

This study was carried out to investigate the potential for the usability of treated olive mill wastewater (OMW) as an organic amendment in agricultural soils under Mediterranean climate conditions. OMW was treated by two different treatment processes as economical (E-OMW) and advanced (A-OMW). The treated OMWs and raw OMW (R-OMW) were applied to a loamy soil at a rate of 100 m3 ha-1 year-1 for 2 years. Soils were sampled 15 days and about 5 months (at harvest) after OMW application for chemical and microbial analyses in each year. The total concentrations of N, P, Cu, Zn, and phenol of …

Land Cover Change And Soil Fertility Decline In Tropical Regions, Alfred E. Hartemink, Tom Veldkamp, Zhanguo Bai Jan 2008

Land Cover Change And Soil Fertility Decline In Tropical Regions, Alfred E. Hartemink, Tom Veldkamp, Zhanguo Bai

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Land cover changes influence the biogeochemistry, hydrology, and climate of the earth. Studies that assessed land cover changes at the global scale mostly focused on: deforestation, cropland expansion, dry land degradation, urbanisation, pasture expansion, and agricultural intensification. For the assessment, remotely sensed land-cover data, census data, and expert knowledge were used. In tropical regions, forest is cleared for the expansion of cropland, wood extraction, or infrastructure expansion. This widely occurs in the Amazon region and in Asia. In many temperate regions, the area under forest is increasing although forest plantations are also on the increase in the tropics. Croplands expanded …
