Storm Surge Wave Interaction Model: Literature Review Of Surge Models, Model Description, And Results Of Virginian Sea Model, Michael J. Carron, Victor Goldsmith

Reports

ABSTRACT The effect of storm surge on wave refraction patterns along 320 km of shoreline in the Virginian Sea (Mid-Atlantic Shelf) has been investigated using an analytical model. Two types of storm surge patterns based on Bodine (1971) and Jelesnianski (1972 and 1974) are used to alter the ocean surface of the Virginian Sea Wave Climate Model (Goldsmith, et al., 1974). The first pattern, based on Bodine's (1971) Bathystrophic Storm Surge Model, is of circular shape (with the maximum sea level rise in the center) and in real situations results mostly from the inverted barometric pressure effect associated with intense …

Nitrogen Phosphorus And Carbox Flux In Chesapeake Bay Marshes, Donald M. Axelrad, Kenneth A. Moore, Michael E. Bender Jan 1976

Nitrogen Phosphorus And Carbox Flux In Chesapeake Bay Marshes, Donald M. Axelrad, Kenneth A. Moore, Michael E. Bender

Reports

Annual nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon budgets for two Virginia salt marshes were determined .by monthly measurements of water discharge and constituent concentrations over tidal cycles.

Considering all three forms of phosphorus measured (total, dissolved organic and orthophosphate) there was a net loss from the estuary to the marches. The data reveal a loss of particulate phosphorus of estuarine origin to marsh sediments and mineralization of this phosphorus in the marshes with subsequent export of dissolved inorganic and organic phosphorus back to the estuary.

Nitrogen flux data show a loss of nitrate and nitrite to the marshes. Particulate nitrogen is imported …

Fine Scale Circulation Near "Foxtrot" In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Christopher S. Welch, Bruce J. Neilson Jan 1976

Fine Scale Circulation Near "Foxtrot" In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Christopher S. Welch, Bruce J. Neilson

Reports

During 1974 the Virginia Institute of Marine Science conducted a series of oceanographic, water quality and modeling studies for the outfall from the proposed Nansemond Wastewater Treatment Plant (VIMS, 1975). One of these studies included dye releases to determine the dispersion and transport of material discharged to Hampton Roads near Pig Point. These dye releases were made from the munitions loading piers known as "Foxtrot".

The proposed outfall, as given in the Facilities Plan is located roughly one kilometer to the east-south-east of Foxtrot. Tidal circulation in Hampton Roads is quite complex and there was concern that the distribution patterns …

Tidal Wetland Plants Of Virginia, Gene M. Silberhorn Jan 1976

Tidal Wetland Plants Of Virginia, Gene M. Silberhorn

Reports

This field book was written for those who want to know more about the common tidal wetland plants in Virginia and adjacent coastal states. Extensive field work has shown that these species are commonly found in saltwater, brackish water and freshwater marshes and swamps.

The text is presented in a non-technical vein. However, some of the more important and interesting plant characteristics that need to be explained are done so in basic botanical terms. For this reason a glossary is included for the reader's convenience.

A descriptive key is provided in order to facilitate the identification of species contained in …

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall Jan 1976

Oyster Spatfall On Shellstrings In Virginia Rivers: 1975 Annual Summary, Dexter S. Haven, Paul C. Kendall

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made from oyster shells strung on wire and · suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of the spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period the strikes will occur. Shells .planted just before the period of maximum set have the best chance of getting a good strike.

Zooplankton Entrainment At The Surry Nuclear Power Plant, James River, Virginia : Final Report, George C. Grant, Burton B. Bryan Jan 1976

Zooplankton Entrainment At The Surry Nuclear Power Plant, James River, Virginia : Final Report, George C. Grant, Burton B. Bryan

Reports

The diverse zooplankton found in marine and estuarine waters serves an important role in food chains, converting phytoplankton and detrital material into protein rich animal tissues necessary in the nutrition of higher life forms, such as the young stages of decapod crustaceans and fishes. Generally free-floating or only weak swimmers, zooplankters are readily entrained in cooling waters pumped into power plants.

Mortality of entrained organisms can be caused by mechanical abrasion, the length of time and amplitude of temperature increases during plant passage, and from chlorination of the system for fouling control. Estimates of the percent of mortality due to …
