This is a histological atlas of the most common organs and tissues found in the American lobster, Homarus americanus. The atlas contains photomicrographs from histological sections of healthy tissues. The atlas contains pictures of tissues that are readily observed in dissection and several that are commonly affected by diseases. It is not a complete atlas. Several organs are not covered, notably the brain, ventral nerve ganglion, sensory organs, and organs associated with molting.

Virginia is the northern most nesting region regularly utilized by loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) along the eastern coast of the United States. Along the southern shoreline of Virginia, between two and ten nests have been recorded annually since 1989 within Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. Since 1992, the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) has attached eight satellite transmitters to nesting loggerhead sea turtles in order to monitor their interesting movements and falVwinter migrations. Polychaetes are a class of annelid worms, generally marine, with more than 10,000 species. Common representatives include the lugworm (Arenicola marina) and the sandworm or clam worm Nereis. Polychaetes are important members of benthic ecosystems, serving as food for other organisms and playing a key role in mixing sediments. This key is designed to help identify polychaete species in Chesapeake Bay and coastal Virginia.

This bibliography has resulted from an initial suggestion by Sargay Timofeev in the March 1990 newsletter of The Chaetognath Group, whose coordinator (Helga Kapp) further suggested that I be given the task. The frequency and distribution of these specimens were analysed and the electrophoretic patterns of soluble eye-lens proteins were determined. This cataract is not of parasitic origin and was rare in specimens from the coastal area. In the lagunar region it occurs mainly in specimens of the River Baguacu from April to November.

This eighth of a series of monogenetic trematodes from the Southern Pacific Ocean discusses two species of Monogenea from Australian waters. Polylabroides mylionis n. sp., from the gills of Mylio butcheri, is described. Neobivagina agonostomi (Sandars, 1945} Dillon and Hargis, 1965, from the gills of Aldrichett~ forsteri, is redescribed; a new locality record is reported for Neobivagina agonostomi.

This seventh in a series of monogenetic trematodes from the Southern Pacific Ocean discusses nine species of Monogenea from Australian waters. Redescriptions are given for Microcotyle arripis Sandars, 1945, M. bassensis Murray, 1931, M. helotes Sandars, 1944, M. nemadactylus Dillon and Hargis, 1965, M. neozealanicus Dillon and Hargis, 1965, M. odacis Sandars, 1945, M. pentapodi Sandars, 1944, and M. temnodontis Sandars, 1945. New locality records are reported for all of the above. New host records are established for Microcotyle bassensis Murray, 1931 and M. neozealanicus Dillon and Hargis, 1965. Microtyle sp. from the gills of Acanthopagrus australis (Gunther) is reported.

During the last 40 yr (1940 to 1980), Soviet helminthologists have examined about 9,680 specimens of marine mammals In the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, using uniform or standard methods In most cases. As a result, 20 new species of trematodes [digeneids], 19 cestodes, 9 acanthocephalans, and 23 nematodes have been described. Also several new supraspecific taxa have been established. This sixth of a series on monogenetic trematodes from the Southern Pacific Ocean discusses five species of Monogenea from Australian waters. Polylabris carnivonensis n. sp., from the gills of Leiognathus fasciatus, and Polylabris sigani no. sp., from the gills of Siganus ormin, are described. Polylabris sillaginae (Woolcock, 1936) n. comb and Gonoplasius carangis Sandars, 1944 are redescribed. In order that comparisons can be made between Australian and New Zealand populations, Kahawaia truttae (Dillon and Hargis, 1965) Lebedev, 1969 is briefly I described.

The energetics of fish locomotion depends on a balance between thrust and drag. The interest stimulated by "Gray's Paradox", that is the seeming lack of sufficient power to overcome many of the estimated values of drag, has resulted in the delineation of a number of potential drag reducing mechanisms (Webb, 1975). Of particular interest is a variety of structural mechanisms, such as scombroid scale corselets (Walters, 1962) and scale ctenii (Burdak, 1969; Bone, 1972), which increase surface roughness and thereby alter boundary layer characteristics. The diagnostic potential of dorsal and anal pterygiophore interdigitation patterns was examined in larval stages of Morone saxatilis, M. chrysops, M. americana and M.mississippiensis. The number and position of pterygiophores relative to interneural spaces 1-6 and 10-13 and interhaemal spaces 12-15 as well as total number of dorsal and anal pterygiophores are characters useful in delimiting larvae of American Morone species. Interdigitation patterns useful in separating M. mississippiensis and M. americana larvae were not found, however these two species may not co-occur.

Original literature on the super family Capsaloidea Price, 1936 published prior to May 1968 was examined for parasite-host locality records in order to study the host-specificity and zoo­geography of the super family. Complete locality records, synonyms, and references for 221 species of capsaloids belonging to 70 genera and five families and parasitizing over 260 natural hosts are given. The platyhelminth, Udonella, lives on parasitic copepod crustaceans and, according to the present system of classification belongs to monogenetic trematodes (Monogena) among which it is usually placed in the group Monopisthocotylea (Fuhrmann, 1928; Bychowsky, 1937; Dawes, 1946; Sproston, 1946). However, the morphology of Udonella has not yet been studied thoroughly by anyone, and a number of unusual features of the structure, ontogenesis and biology of this form cause doubts with regard to its belonging to the Monogena.

Studies of zooplankton are necessary to any broader investigation of aquatic ecosystems. In estuaries such as the Chesapeake Bay, zooplankton function as both detritus feeders. and primary consumers of phytoplankton. Some of them, including chaetognaths, medusae and large copepods, are members of a higher trophic level. The diversity of zooplankton, especially in neiitic areas, contributes to the complexities of' such studies.

The present project was initiated wholly as a result of the interest of the National Science Foundation in Chesapeake Bay and the establishment of the Chesapeake Research Consortium. The design of the research was planned to integrate with ongoing …

A survey was made in southern Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries from April 1965 through March 1968 to determine the species of hydrozoans present, their seasonality and reproductive periodicities. This report discusses 43 hydroid and 27 medusa species known from the study area, of which 23 hydroids and 11 medusae have not previously been found in Chesapeake Bay. Clytia paulensis and the hydroid of Moerisia lyonsi have not been reported before in North American waters, and the hydroid of Amphinema dinema is recorded for the first time from the western Atlantic. Gammarid amphipods of three tidal rivers entering Chesapeake Bay were studied for ten months, particularly in the York River where 40 species were record during the period. Several species moved up or down the rivers with changing salinity. The more abundant species had longer breeding seasons. The number of described species from lower Chesapeake Bay is now 42 and the presence of 10 undescribed species and of several which bracket the region indicates that much remains to be learned about amphipods in the Bay.
