Discovery Of The Northern Hog Sucker In The Ottertail River, Mark A. Otnes

On June 3, 1973 several specimens of the Northern Hog Sucker (Hypentelium nigricans), were collected from a six-mile stretch of the Ottertail River, Aurdal Township, Ottertail County in Minnesota. Previous to this the Northern Hog Sucker has never been collected or reported from the Red River drainage, of which the Ottertail River is a part, nor from Upper Mississippi River Basin adjacent to the Red River drainage. As far back as 1907 researchers erroneously reported the Northern Hog Sucker from the Upper Mississippi River Basin.

Frost cracks developed on from 0 - 29 per cent of the Norway maples in one nursery near St. Paul, Minnesota, in late November, 1970. The trees affected averaged 0 .9 - 1.3 inches in diameter and, of the eight varieties in the nursery, Jade Glen was the most susceptible and Emerald Queen the most resistant. More of the trees on a northeast facing slope were affected than those on a flat knoll. Glycogen content and the activities of phosphorylase (PHRL) and glycogen synthetase (GS) in the hind limb muscle of normal, unilaterally (right) - denervated and in nicotine sulfate (NS) - injected chick embryos were determined to assess the effect of the experimental treatments on glycogen metabolism. Glycogen content increased with increase in age in normal limbs, remained relatively low in denervated limbs, increased with age in left (unoperated) limbs of denervated embryo limbs at a rate lower than normal except between days 13 and 17 of incubation, when glycogen content tripled. Folklore, especially in Europe, has long maintained that shrews are extremely poisonous. Zoologists have discounted this belief as superstition until recently, when it was learned that at least two species of shrews - the European water shrew, Neomys fodiens, and the American short-tailed shrew, Blarina brevicauda - produce a toxin in their sub-maxillary glands.

Regulating Growth Of An Aquatic Plant: Lemna Perpusilla, Willard L. Koukkari, Stanley H. Duke

Growth rates of Lemna perpusilla 6746 can be regulated in axenic cultures by 6-benzylaminopurine (BA) . Concentrations of 10-BM BA significantly enhanced growth, while levels of 10-7M and Higher were inhibitory. These effects of BA on growth were evident when calculated as either fresh weight of frond number.

The nine species which are dependent on man's activities are discussed in more detail. The primary body of the root of Cyclamen persicum Mill. is described. The rootcap consists of two components of separate origin. Cells of the columella are derived from the dermatocalyptrogen by periclinal wall formation. Further growth of the columella is due primarily to the increase in size of existing cells. Cells of the lateral rootcap arise from the protoderm by periclinal wall formation. Continued growth in this region is due to both increase in cell number and increase in size of existing cells. Proximal to the dermatocalyptrogen is the presumptive quiescent center. Around the periphery of this zone are located …
