The Short-Term Effect Of Whole Body Vibration Training On Physical Capabilities On Active Young Recreational Athletes, Esteban Martinez Ballester, Ivan Chulvi Dr

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In recent years, whole body vibration (WBV) has been the subject of a great amount of research towards improving physical capabilities as a postactivation potentiation because the muscle spindle’s sensitivity can be increased (Rittweger, 2010). Typically, WBV is realized by the subject above the platform in squat position while the platform oscillates at differences intensities and amplitudes. Previous reports have shown that WBV produces preconditioning effects that lead an increase of power and flexibility (Jacobs & Burns, 2009), but controversial data exists that have shown no positive effect if an optimal dosage is not used in a controlled manner (Wilcock …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Exposure to microgravity imposes changes on the musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems leading to decreases in aerobic capacity, muscular strength, and muscular fatigue (1). Anti-gravity muscles, those that play a postural role in a standard gravity environment such as the soleus and quadriceps, are most affected by microgravity (2) with nearly all musculature affected with extended spaceflight (3). The multi-mode exercise device (M-MED) is a gravity independent device that provides both high force resistance type and low force aerobic type modes of exercise. Consequently, the M-MED has the ability to enhance both skeletal muscle function through resistance training exercises as well …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

In recent years more and more high schools in Iceland are offering sports academia programs. These programs are intended for teenage athletes in various sports who have the potential of becoming elite athletes. The sports academia programs make it easier for these student athletes to focus on training for their sport while attending high school, and thereby, enable them to get a good education and enhance their athletic potential. These programs also have the potential to reduce drop-out in sports because it is easier for the students to balance athletics and academics. Nevertheless, sports performance is not necessarily linked to …

Body Composition, Physical Activity And Fitness In Children With Moderate-To-Severe Intellectual Disability, Sigurbjorn A. Arngrimsson, Ingi T. Einarsson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Introduction: The prevalence of overweight and obesity has been rising in most parts of the world over the past two decades (1, 2). This rise could pose even a greater problem for people with intellectual disability (ID) because they are more likely to be obese than people without ID (3). Furthermore, research has shown that a sedentary lifestyle is more prevalent among people with ID than otherwise healthy people in modern society (4). In the general population, the adverse effects of obesity on health begin early in life and physical inactivity and adiposity are associated with metabolic diseases and cancers …

The Metabolic Cost Of A Commercialized Video Fitness Program, Michele Olson

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

INTRODUCTION: Numerous fitness products and programs are promoted in mainstream society to the general public for the purposes of developing various aspects of physical fitness especially weight loss. However, there is often little information regarding these products and programs including the energy, or, caloric cost of the workout(s). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the mean energy cost of a popular commercialized video exercise program titled, “The FIRM Express.”

PURPOSE: To investigate the relationships between PA, obesity, and psychological needs for exercise among college-aged Mexican-American males. METHODS: Height, weight, waist circumference (WC), and BMI measures …

Comparison Of Two Back-Squat Training Protocols, Thomas A. Feild, Joe Priest Dr., Rod Cole Feb 2011

Comparison Of Two Back-Squat Training Protocols, Thomas A. Feild, Joe Priest Dr., Rod Cole

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Introduction. Eccentric Overload Training (EOT) and Conventional Training (CT) both contain eccentric components, however EOT utilizes more weight on the bar than the lifter can use during concentric contractions. Previous studies have suggested that EOT may produce benefits beyond what is observed for CT. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the results of two different methods of strength training on one-repetition maximum (1-RM) back-squat (BkSq) and Hang Clean (HCl). Methods and Procedures. Ten collegiate male cheerleader athletes volunteered to participate in the study and performed 1-RM max back-squat prior to and following 13 weeks of training. Four …
