There is growing awareness about the value of preserving and restoring floral-rich habitats for the benefit of pollinators, especially native bees. The increasing demand for native plants in pollinator habitat restoration and other ecological landscaping applications, combined with the desire for more robust and predictable plant habits, have led to the selection and breeding of native cultivars. Yet, little is known about how these cultivated varieties differ from the native species in their ability to attract and support pollinators. Eutrophication, stimulated by phosphorous (P) runoff from landscapes, compromises water quality and can have long-term impacts on the aesthetics, recreation, property values, and drinkability of bodies of water around the world. In the State of Vermont, efforts are underway to control the amount of P entering Lake Champlain per standards set forth in the Federal Clean Water Act. Flowering time is a carefully regulated trait that integrates cues from temperature and photoperiod to coordinate flowering at favorable times of the year. This dissertation aims to understand the evolution of genetic architecture that facilitated the transition of Pooideae, a subfamily of grass, from the tropics to the temperate northern hemisphere approximately 50 million years ago. Two traits hypothesized to have facilitated this evolutionary shift are the use of long-term low-temperature (vernalization) to ready plants for flowering, and long-day photoperiods to induce flowering. The powerful technical capabilities of smartphones offer unprecedented opportunities for collecting dietary information. We have developed an enhanced smartphone application called MyEnergyBalance, which permits imaged-based self-monitoring of all foods consumed, and links to a convenient and user-friendly web-based dietary assessment tool. The primary objective of this pilot study was to determine if the MyEnergyBalance app (with use of images) in combination of the associated website improves dietary recall compared to diet analysis on the MyEnergyBalance website alone. Mastitis represents one of the major economical and animal welfare concerns within the dairy industry. Animals affected with this disease can experience a range of clinical symptoms from mild discomfort and swelling of the udder to a severe systemic inflammatory response that could result in the death of the animal. This range of responses is due to differences in pathogen, environment, and inter-animal differences in their innate immune response. Objective: To retrospectively apply the constructs of the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model to a community-based youth fitness and nutrition summer camp program (Champ Camp) and to identify and describe how the program can be improved based on the findings of the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model evaluation.

The tendency of users to relapse severely hinders adequate treatment of addiction. Physical and psychological stressors often contribute to difficulties in maintaining behavior change, and may play a significant role in relapse. We have previously shown that the activation of pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) systems in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) mediates many consequences of chronic stressor exposure. Hence, chronic stress substantially increased BNST PACAP levels, intra-BNST PACAP infusions produced the behavioral and endocrine consequences of stressor exposure, and BNST PACAP antagonism blocked many of the consequences of chronic stress. Deficits within the brain microcirculation contribute to poor patient outcome following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, the underlying pathophysiology is not well understood. Intra-cerebral (parenchymal) arterioles are encased by specialized glial processes, called astrocyte endfeet. Ca2+ signals in the endfeet, driven by the ongoing pattern of neuronal activity, regulate parenchymal arteriolar diameter and thereby influence local cerebral blood flow. In the healthy brain, this phenomenon, called neurovascular coupling (NVC), matches focal increases in neuronal activity with local arteriolar dilation. The goal of the work presented herein was to further our understanding of Bovine Leukocyte Antigen (BoLA) class I diversity of Holstein cattle and develop tools to measure class I restricted T cell responses to intracellular pathogens such as foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) following vaccination. BoLA is a highly polymorphic gene region that allows the bovine immune system to differentiate pathogen-infected cells from healthy cells. Immune surveillance by CD8+ T cells plays an important role in clearing viral infections. The cover of the heart, or epicardium, consists of a single layer of mesothelial cells. During cardiac development, epicardial cells undergo Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) to form multipotent precursors known as epicardial-derived cells (EPDC). The EPDC migrate into myocardial tissue (containing cardiomyocytes) and subsequently differentiate into fibroblasts, myofibroblasts, and smooth muscle cells. In adult hearts, a similar process of epicardial cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation occurs after myocardial infarction (MI, heart attack). Exposure to interparental conflict has been implicated in children's development. Research suggests that underlying mechanisms, such as neuropsychological indicators of cognitive processes, may shed light on how exposure to interparental conflict differentially influences children's outcomes over time. Event-related potentials (ERP), extracted from electroencephalogram data, allow for examination of neuropsychological markers of cognition based on precise timing and scalp topography of electrical activity in the brain. Escherichia coli (E. coli) are common and typically innocuous copiotrophic bacteria found in the mammalian gut microbiome. However, over the past 30 years, pathogenic E. coli have been responsible for several outbreaks of foodborne illness linked to contaminated produce. The introduction of Escherichia coli to an agricultural soil, via contaminated water, compost, or raw manure, exposes the bacterium to a medley of ecological forces not found in a mammalian gut environment. Forest management practices emphasizing stand structural complexity are of interest across the northern forest region of the United States because of their potential to enhance carbon storage. Our research is nested within a long-term study evaluating how silvicultural treatments promoting late-successional forest characteristics affect aboveground biomass development in northern hardwood forests. We are testing the hypothesis that biomass development (carbon storage) will be greater in structural complexity enhancement (SCE) treatments when compared to conventional uneven-aged treatments. At sites of vascular injury, the critical blood clotting enzyme thrombin is generated from prothrombin via Prothrombinase, a macromolecular, Ca2+-dependent enzymatic complex consisting of the serine protease factor Xa and the non-enzymatic cofactor factor Va, assembled on the membranes of activated platelets. Platelets regulate thrombin formation by providing specific binding sites for the components of Prothrombinase and by releasing a platelet-derived factor V/Va molecule that is more procoagulant than its plasma counterpart and partially resistant to proteolytic inactivation. ABSTRACT

The Discoidin, CUB and LCCL domain-containing protein 2 (DCBLD2/ESDN/CLCP1) is a type-I, transmembrane receptor that mediates diverse cellular processes such as angiogenesis, vascular remodeling, cellular migration and proliferation. Identification of DCBLD2 in a proteomics screen to identify substrates of Src family tyrosine kinases that bind the Src homology 2 domain of CT10 regulator of kinase-Like (CrkL), a critical scaffolding protein for neuronal development, led to a need for further characterization of the protein.
