Regular aerobic exercise promotes physiological cardiac growth, which is an adaptive response thought to enable the heart to meet higher physical demands. Cardiac growth involves coordination of catabolic and anabolic activities to support ATP generation, macromolecule biosynthesis, and myocyte hypertrophy. Although previous studies suggest that exercise-induced reductions in cardiac glycolysis are critical for physiological myocyte hypertrophy, it remains unclear how exercise influences the many interlinked pathways of metabolism that support adaptive remodeling of the heart. Competing time demands in the curriculum have left physical education as a low priority among schools. Consequently, school aged children are not meeting the recommended 150 mins/wk of physical activity. We studied the effects of Minds in Motion-MAZE on middle school aged (n=74) children’s balance and motor skills. Minds in Motion-MAZE is a low cost physical activity program designed to improve balance and motor control. Participants participated in Minds in Motion-MAZE for 15 minutes during the 7th period. A multivariate test did not show a statistical significance of participating in Minds in Motion-MAZE and improved balance and motor skills. …

Controlled frequency breathing (CFB) is a common swim training modality that involves holding one’s breath for ~12 strokes before taking another breath. We sought to examine the effects of CFB training on reducing respiratory muscle fatigue (RMF). Elite swimmers (n = 25) were divided into either the CFB or a group that breathed regularly, every ~3rd stroke. The training intervention included 16 sessions of 12x50-m repetitions with either breathing pattern. RMF was defined as the drop in maximal inspiratory mouth-pressure (MIP) between rest and 46 seconds after a 200 yard free-style swimming race (~114 seconds). The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of short-term high-intensity resistance training on time to exhaustion at maximal aerobic output. It was hypothesized that 2 weeks of training will induce improvements in performance at maximal aerobic output. Eighteen subjects participated in this study. Subjects were assigned to a control (n=8) or resistance training (n=10) groups. The resistance training group participated in 5 sessions of strength training over a period of 2 weeks on the leg press device. Both groups participated in pre and post intervention testing.
