The volume of healthy trees of commercial size in the maple-birch forest type measured during the last two Forest Inventory Analysis surveys of Wisconsin grew at 2 to 3%/yr for sawtimber, and 3 to 4% for pole timber, with substantial differences among species. However, from 1967 to 1989, the real price of logs decreased or remained constant for most grades and species. The decrease was especially large for high grade logs. The only exceptions were red oak and elm, whose prices increased at i to 2 %/yr, for all grades. As a result, the average value growth rate of the …

Knowledge of the biotic and abiotic factors producing long and short-term changes in numbers provides the basis for managing wildlife populations. Frequently, evaluation of these factors over a long time period is impossible. the large, well-documented past fluctuations of mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) numbers on Arizona's North Kaibab plateau (Rasmussen, 1941; Russo, 1964; Caughley, 1970; Burk, 1973) make it potentially useful for examining long-term effects.

Analysis of effects of aspen basal area and density on production of understory vegetation revealed no useful predictive relationships using the model log Y = a + bX. However, as the proportion of ponderosa pine basal area increased in aspen-pine stands, understory production declined in a predictable manner. Root biomass, total biomass, and/or growth rate of aspen may be more closely related to understory production than measures of aspen overstory.

Described are the results of harvesting the above-ground parts of an 18-year-old aspen stand and the observations made on the initial suckering of the new stand. The yields for the stand of 17.7 cunits per acre were greater than predicted yields of comparable material for the site at age 35. Suckering on the area the first area after cutting averaged 37,000 aspen stems per acre and 2.6 feet in height.

This report is a summary of all studies carried out by the Saskatchewan Forestry Branch in hardwood stands. Aspen, the principal component of the hardwood stands, is the most abundant tree species by both volume and area in Saskatchewan and is most difficult to analyze. This report presents conclusions from which further studies can be conducted. It is hoped that in the future closer correlation with site-types may be made as it is difficult and probably not desirable to make further generalization on a province-wide basis. The Treatment Of Decayed Wood From Dead Trembling Aspen Trees For Growth-Ring Analysis, Arthur W. Ghent

This paper elaborates certain procedures briefly outlined in an earlier article. Although dry wood from dead trembling aspen has been found best suited to growth-ring analysis, in its absence use has been made of water-saturated wood from the underside of fallen trunks. A technique of wax impregnation, adaptable to wood in both early and advanced stages of decay, is described. Rapid impregnation with near-boiling wax is sufficient to facilitate transverse sectioning of relatively sound wood; advanced decays require a slower impregnation with cooler paraffin.
