Surface water is found in very limited quantities in most of southwestern Utah. In order to compensate for a deficit of surface water it has been necessary to use underground water where it is possible and profitable to do so. The Milford pumping area in southwestern Utah is an area where expanded irrigated agriculture has been established by pumping of ground water. It is one of four major pumping areas in the state of Utah.

Many hardy annual flowers will live through the winter if there is sufficient snow protection. Since snow cover is not consistent from year to year it has been suggested that hardy annuals planted in late summer and provided with some kind of protection before severe freezing begins will live through the winter successfully. Not only would this enable plants to bloom four to six weeks earlier, but would also enable gardeners to utilize flowers not commonly grown in northern Utah.

The alfalfa seed chalcid, Bruchophagus ruddi Guss., is a jet-black hymenopteran wasp. The destructive nature of this pest has been recognized since the latter part of the nineteenth century. Every year thousands of acres of alfalfa seed are destroyed, with infestation reaching as high as 8 5 percent in some areas. In Utah the chalcid annually ruins from 5 to 25 percent of the alfalfa seed. It has been postulated that the replication of a number of viruses containing single-stranded RNA is accompanied by the formation of a virus-specific double-stranded helical RNA, the replicative form. The salt content of cheese is usually determined by the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) (26) procedure. This method is based upon the determination of chloride in the sample, and results are expressed as per cent sodium chloride. The presence of chlorides in cheese other than sodium chloride would introduce error in the results. However, in practice this is not serious except where relatively large amounts of CaCl₂ are added to the cheese milk.

In the last few years, much research has been done on lipid metabolism because of the possible involvement of lipids in atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. These diseases appear to be related to abnormalities in lipid metabolism. Since sex differences have been noted in lipid metabolism, the role of steroid hormones has been under investigation in a number of laboratories. Coronary heart disease occurs only rarely in women during the reproductive phase. In men, the administration of estrogens results in a decreased serum cholesterol level while androgens tend to increase circulating cholesterol.

Deoxyribonucleic acid isolated from bacteriophage λ can infect Escherichia coli K12 in the presence of adsorbed helper phage (Kaiser and Hogness, 1960; Kaiser, 1962). The manner in which λ DNA enters the cell and the possible role of helper phage in the penetration process is still not clear. Kinetic studies conducted in this laboratory during the initial stages of infection by λ DNA demonstrate a requirement for helper function during the penetration of an infectious molecule. Further investigation into this problem is needed and was the major objective of this study.
