Remote Sensing Of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation In The Lower Chesapeake Bay : Final Report To National Aeronautical And Space Administration Langley Research Center, Robert J. Orth, Hayden H. Gordon
Reports
Kodak's experimental water penetration film and black and white near infrared film were used to study the distribution of submerged aquatic vegetation in the lower Chesapeake Bay. The water penetration film was very useful in this study compared to the black and white N1R. Optimal results from this film were obtained with the camera aperture closed 1/2 stop from suggested settings. Detailed description of the grass beds were obtained by flying at an altitude of 5,000 feet, at low tide when wind conditions were minimal.
There was a 36% reduction in the amount of submerged aquatic vegetation in the lower …

During the 1974-75 contract period the hydraulic escalator was modified and tested in the York and Rappahannock Rive r s . The tests showed that the harvester was capable of raising large quantities of oysters from various types of bottoms. Moreover, these oysters were not broken or crushed, were free .of silt or grit , and t he apparatus caused only minima l damage to the bottom . The modification were made from January to April and field testing began in May 1975 in t he York and Rappahannock Rivers on public and leased bottom and on several types of …
Usable Meat Yields In The Virginia Surf Clam Fishery, Joseph G. Loesch
Usable Meat Yields In The Virginia Surf Clam Fishery, Joseph G. Loesch
VIMS Articles
The weight of surf clam meat landed in Virginia is estimated by the National Marine Fisheries Service, Division of Statistics and Market News (DSMN) by multiplying bushels landed by a constant of 17 lb (7. 71 kg) of total meat per bushel. However, total meat weight includes the viscera, a portion of clam not utilized by the industry. Herein is an analysis of the yield of useable surf clam meat weight per bushel and seasonal variability in meat weight relative to seawater temperature for Virginia stocks

Fine-Structure Of Minchinia Sp (Haplosporida) Sporulation In Mud Crab, Panopeus-Herbstii, Frank O. Perkins
VIMS Articles
Morphogenetic changes which accompany sporulation of Minchinia sp. in the mud crab (Panopeus herbstii) are described. Small (4-19 /-1m diameter) plasmodia, the precursor cells for the sporulation sequence, increase in size and numbers of nuclei per cell to form sporonts with a delimiting wall. Since widely divergent nuclear sizes (2.3-5.9 /-1m diameter) and paired small nuclei < 3 /-1m diameter) were observed in sporonts, it is suggested that karyogamy occurs followed by meiosis. Evidence for meiosis is the observation of synaptonemal-like complexes and polycomplex-like structures in sporont nuclei. Sporonts cleave into uninucleate sporoblasts following one of two pathways. In the presumably "normal" sequence, a cytoplasmic syncytium is formed followed by cleavage into uninucleate sporoblasts. In the other, sporont protoplasm is asynchronously "carved" into uni- or binucleate sporoblasts or sporoplasms as a result of delimitation at the surface and internally. Since aberrant spore formation was commonly observed in the latter type of sporont, its cleavage patterns are considered to be anomalous. A sporoplasm is then delimited in each sporoblast and spore maturation follows. Haplosporosomes were observed in plasmodia and spores, but not in intermediate cell stages. Mitotic apparati appear to be persistent through interphase in plasmodia and sporonts and consist of two spindle pole bodies connected by a bundle of micro tubules.

In recent years there has been increased interest in the development of marine aquaculture or mariculture. Techniques for growing many traditional species. such as oysters and quahogs. have been developed, and considerable effort has also been made to test the feasibility of culturing new . less traditional species (Loosanoff and Davis,1963 : Iversen. 1968; McNeil, 1970; Price and Maurer, 1971: and Milne ,1972). This paper reviews the natural history of the bay scallop. Argopecten irradians Lamarck, and presents a review of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science's (VIMS) continuing research on this species which began in 1968.
