Protein Needs Throughout The Life Cycle, Mei-You Tsai May 1971

Protein Needs Throughout The Life Cycle, Mei-You Tsai

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In most countries in Africa and in South and East Asia the foods which are produced do not provide adequate diets, or in some areas, not enough food for the population. In most areas, it is not the severe shortage of food supplies, but inequality of food distribution and the quality of the diet as influenced by deficiencies of individual nutrients. One of the most severe deficiencies is in protein because of the poor quality and imbalanced diets due to lack of nutritional knowledge and ignorance of the special needs of large groups of people such as pregnant and lactating …

The Effect Of Chromosomal Position On Dosage Compensation And Ontogenic Expression Of The V+ Gene In D. Melanogaster, Jack E. Tobler May 1971

The Effect Of Chromosomal Position On Dosage Compensation And Ontogenic Expression Of The V+ Gene In D. Melanogaster, Jack E. Tobler

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Two manifestations of gene regulation-- dosage compensation and ontogenic regulation--were examined in normally positioned and relocated v+ genotypes in Drosophila melanogaster to determine the role of gene position in these control functions. Enzyme assays, used as criteria of gene activity, were performed on various genotypes containing different doses of v+ in normal and relocated positions in male and female flies. The results indicate that although differently positioned v+ genes may specify different tryptophan pyrrolase activities, they still show dosage compensation. In each case, the enzyme activity associated with each gene, either on the X, Y, or third …

Ribose 5'-Phosphate Aminotransferase Of Salmonella Typhimurium, Gulamnabi Y. Vahora May 1971

Ribose 5'-Phosphate Aminotransferase Of Salmonella Typhimurium, Gulamnabi Y. Vahora

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ribose-5 '-phosphate aminotransferase, an alternate first enzyme in the purine de novo pathway, has been purified about 800-fold from Salmonella typhimurium (pur D-55 ). The enzyme is distinct from ribosylpyrophosphate-5'-phosphate amidotransferase (E C 2.4.2.14), has an approximate molecular weight of 229,000, and requires ribose-5'-phosphate, ATP and either ammonium ion, carbamyl phosphate or L-glutamine, to synthesize 5'-phosphoribosylamine (PRA). A coupled assay system, employing a S. typhimurium (pur G-310) extract as the coupling-agent source, was used to measure the enzyme. PRA production in this system was inhibited by higher ribose-5' -phosphate concentrations and longer (over 10 minutes) incubation periods. It …

Root tips were prepared for observation by the paraffin and aceto-carmine squash methods. Results showed DMSO caused the following abnormalities: arrested metaphases, multipolar spindles, multinucleate cells, stickiness, shortened chromosomes, and mitotic inhibition. Cells from propham treated root tips exhibited the same abnormalities as those treated with DMSO. In addition, propham treatments resulted in polyploid cells and chromosome granulation. In combination, DMSO and propham caused all the abnormalities mentioned above except polyploidy. In …

Water In Relation To The Establishment Of Chukar Partridge In Utah Deserts, James R. Messerli May 1971

Water In Relation To The Establishment Of Chukar Partridge In Utah Deserts, James R. Messerli

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects artificial watering devices (guzzlers) have on chukar (Alectoris graeca) populations were studied in Juab County, Utah.

The effect of water was determined by a comparision of chukar populations near guzzlers with water to guzzlers without water. The closure of two guzzlers had a pronounced effect on the distribution of chukars and the number of chukars decreased significantly at the two guzzlers after their closure.

Water concentrated the chukars, therefore, influencing their activities. During the water-critical period, between 1 July and 1 October, frequent, possibly daily, trips were made to water by chukars.

Reproduction and chick survival …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The influence of bulk density on saturated, unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, diffusivity and water content was measured on undisturbed and disturbed soil samples of Vernal sandy loam and Nibley silty clay loam. Bulk density was changed by artificially compacting the samples.

There was a very large decrease in hydraulic conductivity and diffusivity as water content decreased as has been noted by many others. For the disturbed and compacted samples of the Vernal sandy loam, the water content was higher at .33 and 1.0 bar suction than for the disturbed-uncompacted samples. The same general effect was noted for the undisturbed samples, but …

Economic Rent Values For Pheasant Hunting In Utah, Braulio Rodriguez V. May 1971

Economic Rent Values For Pheasant Hunting In Utah, Braulio Rodriguez V.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A conceptual model relating recreation resource values to the concept of economic rent was developed. The model argues that recreation sites possess both quality and location characteristics which serve as rent producing agents. Sites of better quality extract economic rents relative to those of lesser quality while those located most advantageously to user origins earn location rents relative to those more distantly located. The economic rent values are expressed by the differential use costs and recreationist activity associated with individual site usage.

A methodological procedure was developed which generates estimates of total rent values for a given site. The procedure …

A series of preliminary investigations was carried out to determine the factors promoting the dense, late summer waterblooms of Aphanizomenon flos-aguae in Hyrum Reservoir in northern Utah. Attempts were made to culture the Aphanizomenon in the ASM-8a medium of O'Flaherty and Phinney (J. Phycol. 6:95-97. 1970), but no growth was obtained and the algae soon lysed. Cultures were maintained, without growth, for more than four months in a lake water--lake sediment medium at 17 C under 1500 lux flourescent light.

Dissolved oxygen measurements using an in situ probe revealed the development of a sharp oxycline during the summer months; on …

The Flat Pod Rogue In Snap Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Lynn B. Kerr May 1971

The Flat Pod Rogue In Snap Beans (Phaseolus Vulgaris L.), Lynn B. Kerr

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Segregation patterns of several pod shapes of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Tendercrop, were studied. The causes of build-up of off-type pods in a seed stock were examined as were possible means of reversing the buildup. Natural selection factors such as germination, vigor, earliness, and ease of threshing, favored the off-types. Careful, selective milling was found to be an aid to roguing in keeping stock seed as free as possible of the off-type pods.

To gather data on visitor use of the refuge, the visiting public was directly sampled by three methods: mail questionnaires, on-site interviews and candid tower observations of groups on the tour.

The information and …

Investigation Of Urolithiasis Occurring In Hatchery-Reared Trout In Utah, Ernest H. Dean Jr. May 1971

Investigation Of Urolithiasis Occurring In Hatchery-Reared Trout In Utah, Ernest H. Dean Jr.

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The urolithiasis condition investigated occurred at a "hard water" hatchery in Utah after the trout were changed from a meat diet to a commercial pelleted fish feed as a sole sustaining diet in 1961. Numerous diet modifications proved unsuccessful in preventing urolithiasis at the hatchery. It was eventually determined that different commercial diets resulted in varied percentages of trout developing urolithiasis. The urolithic deposits found in the kidney tubules were amorphous and composed of calcium phosphate (apatite) and an organic matrix. Bacterial contamination of the kidneys was not an important factor in the formation of urolithiasis. Rainbow trout containing urolithic …

As the whey level increased to 10 percent of the flour weight, the crust became browner during baking and the shortometer recorded an increase in tenderness. The taste panel noted as whey levels increased to 10 percent and above that the color became yellow instead of creamy white; the flavor became undesirable; and pastry became less tender and flaky.

Whey significantly increased the desirability of muffins by …

A Study Of The Biology Of The Species Of Protocalliphora In The Northern Wasatch Range, Terry L. Whitworth May 1971

A Study Of The Biology Of The Species Of Protocalliphora In The Northern Wasatch Range, Terry L. Whitworth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

A total of 733 bird nests, representing 55 species from 23 habitats, was examined. Forty-nine percent of the nests of 39 bird species were infested with 16 species of Protocalliphora.

Infestation of bird nests by Protocalliphora is believed to be related to a number of factors, which are discussed. Loosely constructed nests, nests heavily saturated with feces, and nests occupied early in the season had low rates of infestation. Nests of colonial birds were more frequently infested than those of solitary birds. Nests of some birds were rarely or never infested.

Sixteen species of Protocalliphora are differentiated and their …

An Electrophysiological Study Of The Oral Plate Sensory Organs Of The Honey Bee (Apis Mellifera L.), Rodney R. Seeley

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The oral plate sense organs of the honey bee, Apis mellifera L., have been investigated employing an electrophysiological technique which allows simultaneous stimulation and recording.

The results of the study present evidence that the four bipolar sense cells innervating the sensory papillae on the oral surface of the hypopharynx are chemoreceptors. The sensory papillae respond to cations, glucose, water, and amino acids. Evidence for the absence of a mechanosensory cell is presented. The data concerning the sensory structures agree with the current theories of chemoreception.
