Preliminary Studies Of Germination Requirements Of Shadscale Atriplex Confertifolia Torr. And Ferm. Wats, Ijaz Hussain

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Shadscale (Atriplex confertilolia (Torr. and Frem.) Wats.) is an important component of the salt-desert-shrub vegetation type in the intermountain region. This species dominates a large portion of the 41 million acres occupied by this vegetation type. Shapscale reaches greatest importance at lower elevations of Utah and Nevada, where despite the low productivity due to its harsh habitat, this vigorous shrub furnishes considerable winter grazing for sheep and cattle. Gates et al. (1966) have observed that poor drainage conditions, coupled with low precipitation, results in the concentration of salts, a chief habitat factor determining the growth and distribution of this species. …

Transfer Restrictions And Misallocation Of Irrigation Water, Herbert H. Fullerton May 1966

Transfer Restrictions And Misallocation Of Irrigation Water, Herbert H. Fullerton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Water is among the most abundant of all materials known to man. In all its various forms, water covers 75 percent of the earth's surface. It is estimated that the total physical quantity of water on the earth is 326,000,000 cubic miles. This apparent abundance belies the true nature of the water resource as it relates to the needs of man. At any given point in time, only a rather minute portion of this vast quantity of water is found in those forms and locations which render it useful to man. This may be attributed to the fact that utility …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The United States Government controls about 359 million acres of land in the 11 Western States. This vast acreage produces recreation for vacationers, timber for lumbermen, water for city and rural consumption, forage for livestock and wildlife, and minerals for miners. In many cases, the users of these products are competing and are clamoring for a large share of this land. Consequently, land use is continually changing. Since 1941, the amount of timber cut has tripled, recreation has doubled, watersheds now yield a better quality of water (Clawson, 1957), forage for wildlife has increased but forage for livestock use has …

It is one of four major pumping areas in the state of Utah.

The Effect Of Protective Materials On The Overwintering Of Hardy Annuals, Candytuft And Stocks, Melvin S. Burningham May 1966

The Effect Of Protective Materials On The Overwintering Of Hardy Annuals, Candytuft And Stocks, Melvin S. Burningham

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many hardy annual flowers will live through the winter if there is sufficient snow protection. Since snow cover is not consistent from year to year it has been suggested that hardy annuals planted in late summer and provided with some kind of protection before severe freezing begins will live through the winter successfully. Not only would this enable plants to bloom four to six weeks earlier, but would also enable gardeners to utilize flowers not commonly grown in northern Utah.

Some studies conducted at the Utah Experiment Station in Farmington have indicated that plants such as candytuft and snapdragons can …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Research on biosynthesis of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) ribonucleic acid (RNA) in vitro has been reported by Cochran, et al; Karasek and Schramm; Kim and Wildman; Cornuet and Astier; and Tongur and Baland in. It has been postulated that the replication of a number of viruses containing single-stranded RNA is accompanied by the formation of a virus-specific double-stranded helical RNA, the replicative form. This has been demonstrated both for animal and bacterial viruses including MS2. The double helical structure of purified replicative form of MS2 was established by X-ray diffraction studies. One of the strands was shown to be a …

Studies On Amino Acid Balance In Three Fish Meals, Krachang Wisutharom

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

High levels of fish mean cannot be used in chick diets in the United States because of the relatively high cost as compared to soybean meal. In certain areas or countries where large amounts of fish meal are produced, it may be economically feasible to use fish meal as the major protein supplement in the poultry rations.

Feed consumed by poultry must provide most of the materials the birds need for growth or to produce eggs. Those who formulate feed must select ingredients and combine them in proportions which will allow the bird to grow or produce eggs at the …

The Complex Formation Of Silver Ion With Ribonucleic Acid, Guanosine, Inosine And Related Compounds And Peroxidase-Like Activity Of A Haemundecapeptide Prepared From Horse Heart Cytochrome C, José Angel Reinosa

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The importance of nucleic acids in plant and animal cells as carriers of genetic information and as protein biosynthesis agents is well recognized. It is also known that nucleic acid is a component of all viruses.

Takahashi (45) and Fraenkel-Conrat (16) demonstrated that the protein component of tobacco mosaic virus is non-infectious to the host plant, although it is identical to the original virus morphologically. The virus ribonucleic acid (RNA) alone was infectious, however.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), which is present in chromosomes, displays a very specific function. The chromosome long has been accepted as the carrier of the hereditary unit, …

The Inhibition Of Water Uptake In Sugar Beet Roots By Ammonia, Darrel Marshall Stuart May 1966

The Inhibition Of Water Uptake In Sugar Beet Roots By Ammonia, Darrel Marshall Stuart

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Various ammonium salts, urea, aqua ammonia, and anhydrous ammonia are important sources of nitrogen for the fertilization of agricultural crops. While ammonia and its compounds are useful as fertilizers, they can be, and often are, toxic to many plants (Willis and Rankin, 1930; Stout and Tolman, 1941; Raleigh, 1942; Stoll, 1954; Lorenz, 1955; Grogan and Zink, 1956; Allen, 1962; Cooke, 1962; Allred, 1963; Court et al, 1964; Hood and Ensminger, 1964). There are also products which have been designed to retard the oxidation of ammonia and its compounds (Go ring, 1962). It is therefore important that the effects of ammonia …

Physio-Chemical Changes In Relation To The Rest Period Of Peach And Apricot Trees, Hussein Ibrahim El-Mansy May 1966

Physio-Chemical Changes In Relation To The Rest Period Of Peach And Apricot Trees, Hussein Ibrahim El-Mansy

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Many plants require exposure to low temperature for a certain period during each year. This was determined more than a century ago. Understanding this phenomenon, known as the rest period, is part of a larger problem of understanding the factors which determine the ability of an organism to grow. The property of rest is ultimately a property of the actively growing cells, rather than that of the cells involved with protection and support.

Potentiometric Measurement Of Sodium Chloride In Cheese, Seyed-Hossein Salimi May 1966

Potentiometric Measurement Of Sodium Chloride In Cheese, Seyed-Hossein Salimi

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The salt content of cheese is usually determined by the American Dairy Science Association (ADSA) (26) procedure. This method is based upon the determination of chloride in the sample, and results are expressed as per cent sodium chloride. The presence of chlorides in cheese other than sodium chloride would introduce error in the results. However, in practice this is not serious except where relatively large amounts of CaCl2 are added to the cheese milk.

In determining the NaCl in cheese, one would be as justiied in basing his results on sodium analysis as on chloride analysis. An exception would …

Neutral 17-Ketosteroid And 17, 21-Dihydroxy-20-Ketosteroid Excretion In Urine Of University Women During The Menstrual Cycle, Shao Shen Yam

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the last few years, much research has been done on lipid metabolism because of the possible involvement of lipids in atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease. These diseases appear to be related to abnormalities in lipid metabolism. Since sex differences have been noted in lipid metabolism, the role of steroid hormones has been under investigation in a number of laboratories. Coronary heart disease occurs only rarely in women during the reproductive phase. In men, the administration of estrogens results in a decreased serum cholesterol level while androgens tend to increase circulating cholesterol.

Experiments on rats and chickens have indicated that …

Breeding And Roasting Temperature As Related To Beef Tenderness And Other Quality Factors, Ruth Ann B. Jenson May 1966

Breeding And Roasting Temperature As Related To Beef Tenderness And Other Quality Factors, Ruth Ann B. Jenson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

According to the 1964 census the production and sale of livestock provided a major source of income in the state of Utah. Twenty-three of the state's twenty-nine counties received more than 40 percent of their total farming income from livestock sales in 1959. According to Taylor (1965) this is expected to increase even more. In studying the economic sources within Utah, it becomes evident that many of the state's farmers and ranchers depend heavily on the sale of livestock for their livelihood. Upon observing this fact, Taylor (1965) states that farm income will depend just as heavily on the sale …

Cholesterol Levels In Serum And 5Β – Pregnane – 3Α,20Α - Diol In Urine Of University Students, Gertrude Kuei-Shu Chiang

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since there is a high incidence of coronary heart disease in humans of middle-age and older in the United States, and the mortality of this disease is still increasing, a great deal of research has been done in this field. Although many theories have been formulated concerning the cause of atherosclerosis, it is a very complex disease, and appears to be influenced by many factors. Disturbed lipid metabolism is widely believed to be involved in the development of the vascular lesions found in arteriosclerosis, although the nature and origin of the disturbance is unknown. The mechanism for the elevation of …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Since 1905 when Professor Henry C. Taylor opened the area of economies of scale for discussion with his observations on the variables affecting farm size, agricultural economists have been concerned with scale of plant in agriculture. Considerable study and discussion have not resolved many of the questions raised in this area, but a basic framework has been constructed which can be used as a planning tool in the efficient organization and operation of plants of various sizes under given conditions.

An Evaluation Of Conservation Reserve Lands In Relation To Pheasant Production And Survival, Richard M. Bartmann May 1966

An Evaluation Of Conservation Reserve Lands In Relation To Pheasant Production And Survival, Richard M. Bartmann

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The ring-necked pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is one of the most important upland game species over much of the nation. It is also one of the most difficult to effectively manage for the increasing hunter population. The high value of agricultural lands renders habitat improvement programs by state agencies a financial impossibility except on an extremely localized basis. Therefore, the primary pheasant management tool largely remains hunting season manipulation.

The federal government through various agricultural programs may have an influence upon pheasant habitat. Public Law 540 entitled "Agricultural Act of 1956," more commonly referred to as the "Soil Bank …

The Initiation Of Infection By Dna From Bacteriophage Lambda, Gerald D. Elseth May 1966

The Initiation Of Infection By Dna From Bacteriophage Lambda, Gerald D. Elseth

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Deoxyribonucleic acid isolated from bacteriophage λ can infect Escherichia coli K12 in the presence of adsorbed helper phage (Kaiser and Hogness, 1960; Kaiser, 1962). The manner in which λ DNA enters the cell and the possible role of helper phage in the penetration process is still not clear. Kinetic studies conducted in this laboratory during the initial stages of infection by λ DNA demonstrate a requirement for helper function during the penetration of an infectious molecule. Further investigation into this problem is needed and was the major objective of this study.

Some Biochemical Changes Occurring In Tomato Fruit Ripened By Several Treatments, Arthur A. Boe May 1966

Some Biochemical Changes Occurring In Tomato Fruit Ripened By Several Treatments, Arthur A. Boe

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The ripening of fruit, aside from its economic consequence, is of importance in the study of the development and physiology of plants. The fruit, being the reproductive organ of the plant, is fundamentally necessary for the continuation of the species. The production of fruit is also of major economic importance.

The fruit is nurtured, not only by its own ability when young to produce carbohydrates by photosynthesis, but also by the translocation of sugar and other compounds produced in the leaves. While young, the fruit appears to function as the modified leaf that it is believed to be. It is …
