Effect Of Cold Storage On Development Of Suckers On Aspen Root Cuttings, George A. Schier, R.B. Campbell Jan 1978

Effect Of Cold Storage On Development Of Suckers On Aspen Root Cuttings, George A. Schier, R.B. Campbell

Aspen Bibliography

The effect of cold storage on suckering ability of excised roots was determined for 10 aspen clones. Root cuttings were collected in June, August, and October and stored for from 7 to 42 days at 2°C. In addition, cuttings from dormant trees were stored for 175 days to determine if they had cold requirements for suckering. Among clones, there were large differences in capacity to produce root suckers. Cold storage had a small but significant effect on the formation and growth of suckers on root cuttings collected in June and August. As a rule, clones responded similarly to cold storage. …

Mirid Fauna Associated With Old-Field Goldenrods (Solidago: Compositae) In Ithaca, N.Y., Frank J. Messina

Biology Faculty Publications

The mirid fauna associated with oldfield goldenrods (Solidago spp.) was sampled from May 10-Oct. 25, 1977 in Ithaca, New York USA . Species (23) belonging to 16 genera were recorded; 97% of all individuals (1099) belong to 6 genera (Lygus, Slaterocoris, Lopidea, Plagiognathus, Adelphocoris and Polymerus). The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris, was the most common species. The dominant mirids can be divided into 2 fairly distinct guilds, L. lineolaris, 2 Plagiognathus spp. and A. rapidus feeding primarily on goldenrod flowers and 3 Slaterocoris spp., Lopidea media and Polymerus venaticus feeding on the immature foliage. The phenological pattern exhibited by …

A System For Predicting The Amount Of Phellinus (Fomes) Igniarius Rot In Trembling Aspen Stands, Robert L. Anderson, Arthur L. Schipper, Jr. Jan 1978

A System For Predicting The Amount Of Phellinus (Fomes) Igniarius Rot In Trembling Aspen Stands, Robert L. Anderson, Arthur L. Schipper, Jr.

Aspen Bibliography

The occurrence of Phellinus (Fomes) igniarius white trunk rot in 45- to 50-year-old trembling aspen stands can be predicted by applying a constant to the stand basal area with P. igniarius rot. Future decay projections can be made by reapplying the basal area of hidden delay for each 6 years projected. This paper describes the methods used to determine the constant and how to use it in the field.

Biomass And Nutrient Distribution In Aspen, Pine, And Spruce Stands On The Same Soil Type In Minnesota, David H. Alban, Donald A. Perala, Bryce E. Schlaegel Jan 1978

Biomass And Nutrient Distribution In Aspen, Pine, And Spruce Stands On The Same Soil Type In Minnesota, David H. Alban, Donald A. Perala, Bryce E. Schlaegel

Aspen Bibliography

Vegetation and soils were sampled in adjacent 40-year-old stands of red pine (Pinus resinosa Ait.), jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench.) Voss), and aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx., P. grandidentata Michx.) on a very fine sandy loam soil in north-central Minnesota. Total tree biomass was greatest for red pine followed by by aspen, spruce, and jack pine. Nutrient weights (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) in the trees were greatest in aspen followed generally by spruce, red pine, and jack pine. Particularly large proportions of biomass and nutrients were found in aspen bark and …

Aspen Sucker Production And Growth From Outplanted Root Cuttings, Donald A. Perala

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen suckers from 1-m-long root cuttings survived and grew better than those from 12.5-cm-long cuttings. Sucker survival and growth were also inversely related to parent root diameter. Discusses the practical implications for aspen management.

Environmental And Successional Relations Of Aspen Communities In Central And Northern Utah, Jan A. Henderson

Aspen Bibliography

Aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a major forest cover type in central and northern Utah. It comprises about 35% of the forest dominated land in this area. It is mostly non-commercial timberland, but has moderately high values for watershed protection, range and wildlife values.
