The effect of cold storage on suckering ability of excised roots was determined for 10 aspen clones. Root cuttings were collected in June, August, and October and stored for from 7 to 42 days at 2°C. In addition, cuttings from dormant trees were stored for 175 days to determine if they had cold requirements for suckering. Among clones, there were large differences in capacity to produce root suckers. Cold storage had a small but significant effect on the formation and growth of suckers on root cuttings collected in June and August. As a rule, clones responded similarly to cold storage. …

Aspen suckers from 1-m-long root cuttings survived and grew better than those from 12.5-cm-long cuttings. Sucker survival and growth were also inversely related to parent root diameter. Discusses the practical implications for aspen management.

Aspen (Populus tremuloides) is a major forest cover type in central and northern Utah. It comprises about 35% of the forest dominated land in this area. It is mostly non-commercial timberland, but has moderately high values for watershed protection, range and wildlife values.

The aspen type in Wisconsin occupies about 3.7 million acres, 25 percent of the commercial forest land in the State. Aspen is a major pulpwood species in the State and during recent years has provided 40 to 45 percent of the total pulpwood. Because of the wide extent of the aspen type and importance of the timber industry, there is considerable interest in knowing the inherent capabilities of the aspen forest land.
