The Larval Development Of Pinnixa Longpipes (Lockington, 1877) (Brachyura: Pinnotheridae), Reared In The Laboratory, George Daryl Bousquette

The Pea Crab, Pinniza longpies, is commensal with the tube building polychaete, Axiothella rubrocincta. This worm constructs U-shaped tubes in san-mud substrata of bays and estuaries along the Pacific coast. The pronounced lateral elongation and diminutive size of p. Longpies enable it to move easily in the narrow tube with the worm. The species has occasionally been found with other polychaetes, including Pectinaria and Pista. According to Schmitt et al (1973) Pinnixa longpies range from Tomales Bay to Laguna Beach in California. There are no published accounts regarding the biology of this commensal crab.

As our knowledge of bivalves has increased, so has information about their parasites. Most studies of bivalve parasites have been devoted to groups infesting commercially important mollusks, notably trematodes and copepods. Another group of bivalve symbionts which has been known since the early nineteenth century is the brachyuran genus Pinnotheres Latreille, 1802 (commonly known as pea crabs). The generic name was given because of the belief that the crabs were predators upon the scallops in which they were most frequently found (Pearce, 1966). The present study has attempted to investigate some of the more basic questions concerning the toxicity and accumulation of mercury in the purple shore crab, Hemigrapsus nudus. This rocky intertidal denizen is found in abundance along the entire Pacific coast of the United States from Sitka, Alaska, to the Gulf of California where it dominates the mid-tide pool region. Local specimens were collected just north of the Pacific Marine Stations, Dillon Beach, Marin County, California. Macome secta has been reported along the western coast of North America from the Aleution Islands to Lower California (Packard, 1918), Indicating adaptation to a wide range of habitats. In the Dillon Beach ares, Racons secta is found in a well protected cover just inside. and to the cast of the mouth of Tomales Bay.
