Since plants cannot actively avoid herbivory, they rely on two primary strategies to maintain their fitness in the face of herbivore pressure: resistance—the deterrence of herbivory via physical and chemical means—and tolerance—recuperation of aboveground mass after herbivory. Although diverse groups have been shown to be tolerant to herbivory, mechanisms of tolerance are not yet well known. There is also very little known about the ecological relevance of tolerance strategies in wild populations. The blood-cerebrospinal fluid boundary is present at the level of epithelial cells of the choroid plexus. As one of the sources of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the choroid plexus (CP) plays an important role during brain development and function. Its formation has been studied largely in mammalian species. Lately, progress in other model animals, in particular the zebrafish, has brought a deeper understanding of CP formation, due in part to the ability to observe CP development in vivo. As top predators in the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) of China, Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (Sousa chinensis) are bioindicators for examining regional trends of environmental contaminants in the PRE. We examined samples from stranded S. chinensis in the PRE, collected since 2004, to study the distribution and fate of total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg) and selenium (Se) in the major tissues, in individuals at different ages and their prey fishes from the PRE. This study also investigated the potential protective effects of Se against the toxicities of accumulated THg. Dolphin livers contained the highest concentrations of THg (32.34658.98 mg g21 dw) …

The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), is of great concern because of its destructive nature to endemic wildlife, livestock, and people. Various methods for managing this pest are currently being developed, including the use of viruses as biological control agents. In this study, the effectiveness of the Solenopsis invicta virus (SINV-1), (a positive sense, single-stranded RNA virus in the Dicistroviridae family (Genus: Aparavirus) which only infects the Genus Solenopsis) as an effective biological control agent against S. invicta infestation combination with commonly used insecticides was investigated. Blattabacterium, an obligate bacterial endosymbiont, functions as a mechanism of nitrogen recycling and nutrient synthesis within the Order Blattaria (cockroaches). Through genome annotation and the application of bioinformatics, the function of Blattabacterium within the cockroach Nauphoeta cinerea was described. Results of analyses indicate that the Blattabacterium genome, comprised of ~620,000 base pairs and ~620 individual genes, is drastically reduced when compared Flavobacterium, Blattabacterium’s closest free-living relative. However, the Blattabacterium genome retained functionality vital to host survival and fecundity and functions as a source of additional nutrient biosynthesis within its host. Six species of freshwater mussel are of conservation concern throughout their range in East Texas, (Texas pigtoe (Fusconaia askewi), triangle pigtoe (Fusconaia lananensis), southern hickorynut (Obovaria jacksoniana), sandbank pocketbook (Lampsilis satura), Louisiana pigtoe (Pleurobema riddellii), and Texas heelsplitter (Potamilus amphichaenus)). These species warranted listing in Texas due, in part, to their restricted distributions and low abundances. These mussels, like most unionids, exhibit an unusual life cycle, unique to Unionidae, in which their larvae, called glochidia, are obligate ectoparasites on fish. The onset of flowering, the change from vegetative to reproductive development, is a major life history transition in flowering plants. Recent work suggests that mutations in cis-regulatory mutations should play critical roles in the evolution of this (as well as other) important adaptive traits, but thus far there has been little evidence that directly links regulatory mutations to evolutionary change at the species level. While several genes have previously been shown to affect natural variation in flowering time in Arabidopsis thaliana, most either show protein-coding changes and/or are found at low frequency (o5%). The Role Of Piua, An Outer Membrane Iron Receptor, In The Pathogenesis Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa, Brandon J. Beddingfield

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a common pathogen in those with compromised immunity. It has been attributed to deaths in the majority of cases of Cystic Fibrosis. Using a strain of P. aeruginosa containing no functional piuA gene, coding for an outer membrane siderophore/iron complex receptor, we show that several virulence determinants are upregulated. These include pyocyanin production, adherence to lung epithelia, and cytotoxicity of lung epithelia. Growth was diminished in iron depleted media, suggesting that even though individual cells may be more virulent in the knockout strains, the overall resulting infection may be less severe.
