IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Thirty-five cultivars of alfalfa were evaluated at EE de Zootecnia in Sertãozinho,SP, Brazil. During four years, the plants were harvested to determine dry matter yield on total and individual cuts. A completely randomized block design with three replications was used, and data were analyzed by groups of origin and dormancy degree. There were significant differences (P< 0.05) among the cultivars regarding their dormancy degree, however no differences (P> 0.05) were observed regarding their origin. Cultivars with 8 and 9 dormancy degree showed better performance during the four year trial when compared to 7 degree, although some of the 9 degree cultivars resulted in low yield. The origin of cultivars did not influence …

Genetic Resources For Tropical Areas: Achievements And Perspectives, Cacilda B. Do Valle Nov 2021

Genetic Resources For Tropical Areas: Achievements And Perspectives, Cacilda B. Do Valle

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

This paper analyses the present status of tropical forage resources and their utilization in the development of novel cultivars based on the accumulated information from past decades of collecting, evaluation and whatever little breeding has been pursued. The situation of world collections of tropical forages is presented and discussed in the light of limited investment and dwindling resources. A cause for concern is the lesser priority assigned to conservation and manipulation of official tropical germplasm banks, such as CSIRO’S and CIAT’s. In order to assure the availability of tropical genetic resources for the future it is imperative that international efforts …

Itapemirim, Mineiro and Napier). After a 60-day growing period, total, leaf, stem and root FW and DW and stem, stem base, leaf and root SC content were determined. Cameroon-class cultivars showed the highest leaf and stem DW and whole stem SC …

Maturity And Fertilization Effects On Leaf Blade Tissue Percentages Of Contrasting Fescue Cultivars, L. B. Tempone, M. S. Cid, M. A. Brizuela, M. C. Nunciari, M. G. Cendoya Oct 2021

Maturity And Fertilization Effects On Leaf Blade Tissue Percentages Of Contrasting Fescue Cultivars, L. B. Tempone, M. S. Cid, M. A. Brizuela, M. C. Nunciari, M. G. Cendoya

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Palenque Plus and Ceres Torpedo are tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) cultivars available to the animal production systems in the humid Pampean Region of Argentina. They differ in growth cycle and morphological characteristics. At vegetative stage, Torpedo leaves are fine and tender, which suggests that their percentages of slowly digestible and indigestible tissues (SDIT) should be low. In this study we 1) explored the effects of phenological stage and nitrogen fertilization on leaf blade tissue percentages of both cultivars, using an ordination multivariate technique, and 2) evaluated the effects of these factors on the percentage of SDIT. Our results …

Comparison Of Four Maize Cultivars (Zea Mays L.) As Winter Forage In Sudan, Rihab El Zubair Oct 2021

Comparison Of Four Maize Cultivars (Zea Mays L.) As Winter Forage In Sudan, Rihab El Zubair

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Winter forage availability in Sudan is constrained by lack of a suitable annual winter forage crop. The main forage crop grown is Abu70 (Sorghum bicolor) which is a summer crop that yields 7.6-8.4 t/ha in summer but much less in winter. There is, therefore, need for a winter high yielding forage crop that exceeds Abu70 in productivity and quality. This study was aimed to evaluate four forage maize cultivars as potential winter crops in central Sudan in terms of productivity and quality. An experiment was conducted using four maize forage cultivars. The experiment lasted for two consecutive seasons …

Growth Performance And Yield Of Three Brachiaria Cultivars Subjected To Different Eco-Climatic Zones Of Tanzania, Ismail S. Selemani

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Replacement of high quality (perennial forage) with low quality (annual forage) due to the effects of climate change has resulted into low milk production in Tanzania to 4.5L which is below the genetic potential of producing at least 15L of milk per cow per day. Though high yield fodder grasses such as Brachiaria have been recommended as climate smart fodder grass, little information has been documented in Tanzania particularly with respect to the growth performance of these grasses across different eco-climatic zones. The current study determine the performance and yield of three cultivars of Brachiaria (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piata, …

The viability of double cropping corn (Zea mays L.) in Uruguay, germplasm combination, dry matter yield and nutritive value were evaluated. An early (E) maturing hybrid, an early to medium (E-M) one and an E-M variety were planted as spring crops. One E-M hybrid, one medium to late (M-L) hybrid and a late (L) variety were planted as a second crop. PVC laboratory scale silo of the spring crop and the whole plant of the summer crop were chemically analyzed. The nutritive value of the silages were related to plant maturity stage. No differences were detected in nutritive value among …

Yields And Sward Characteristics Of Timothy Cultivars Under Grazing, H. T. Kunelius, G. H. Dürr, K. B. Mcrae, S. A. E. Fillmore Sep 2021

Yields And Sward Characteristics Of Timothy Cultivars Under Grazing, H. T. Kunelius, G. H. Dürr, K. B. Mcrae, S. A. E. Fillmore

IGC Proceedings (1997-2023)

Seven timothy (Phleum pratense L.) cultivars were evaluated over three pasture seasons under rotational grazing to 7 or 11 cm post-grazing heights and regrowth periods of four to seven weeks. There was a trend for the pasture type timothy cultivars to outyield Champ timothy (check). Dry matter yields were lower for the 7 cm than 11 cm post-grazing height. Although the overall cultivar x post-grazing height interaction was not significant (P > 0.05), there was variability in grazing tolerance among timothy cultivars. Yield of Kahu was maintained and vegetative tiller density of Kahu increased over the experimental period under 7 …
