Oldest Indo-Pacific Lionfish (Pterois Volitans/P. Miles) Recorded From The Northwestern Gulf Of Mexico, Raven D. Blakeway, Alexander Q. Fogg, Glenn A. Jones

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans/miles) were first detected off the coast of Florida in the 1980s, with aquaria release being the most likely mechanism for introduction. Since then, lionfish have proliferated through the Western Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of Mexico (GOM). Here, we report the oldest lionfish aged on record in the Western Atlantic, removed from Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS) in the GOM. In August 2018, a research expedition removed 745 lionfish from FGBNMS, of which a subset were retained for age and growth estimation. The oldest lionfish was a 10 y old male, …

Diel Activity Patterns And Movement Of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Volitans/P. Miles) In The Florida Keys Identified Using Acoustic Telemetry, Michael Mccallister, Jeffrey Renchen, Benjamin Binder, Alejandro Acosta Jan 2018

Diel Activity Patterns And Movement Of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Volitans/P. Miles) In The Florida Keys Identified Using Acoustic Telemetry, Michael Mccallister, Jeffrey Renchen, Benjamin Binder, Alejandro Acosta

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The invasion of Indo—Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans/P. miles) throughout the Caribbean and southeastern U.S. Atlantic represents a significant ecological threat, yet few studies have examined the daily activity and movement patterns of this invasive species. In this study, passive acoustic telemetry was used to track lionfish at 4 coral reef sites in the Florida Keys. Fourteen lionfish were tagged among the 4 sites, and the total number of days tagged fish were detected ranged from 5 to 141 days. Hourly detection data revealed diel activity patterns with peaks at dawn and dusk. Mixed model analysis of detection data indicated a …

Continued Spread Of The Seagrass Halophila Stipulacea In The Caribbean: Documentation In Puerto Rico And The British Virgin Islands, Hector Ruiz, David L. Ballantine, Jorge Sabater Jan 2017

Continued Spread Of The Seagrass Halophila Stipulacea In The Caribbean: Documentation In Puerto Rico And The British Virgin Islands, Hector Ruiz, David L. Ballantine, Jorge Sabater

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The geographical spread of Halophila stipulacea in the Caribbean since its first documentation in Grenada in 2001 has been impressive, as it has since been reported from most of the Caribbean. We now document its presence in the northern Caribbean at Culebra Island and in the Atlantic at a site between Humacao and Vieques Island, Puerto Rico. We further report the seagrass from Road Harbour, Tortola, British Virgin Islands. Spread of the invasive seagrass Halophila stipulacea is probably largely driven by Caribbean current patterns from its likely point of introduction in the southeast of the Caribbean basin. Continued spread into …

Distribution And Length Frequency Of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Sp.) In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Alexander Q. Fogg, Eric R. Hoffmayer, William B. Driggers Iii, Matthew D. Campbell, Gilmore J. Pellegrin, William Stein Jan 2013

Distribution And Length Frequency Of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Sp.) In The Northern Gulf Of Mexico, Alexander Q. Fogg, Eric R. Hoffmayer, William B. Driggers Iii, Matthew D. Campbell, Gilmore J. Pellegrin, William Stein

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The purpose of this communication is to document continued spatial expansion of lionfish farther west into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Furthermore, we provide the first length— mass relationships and length frequency information for lionfishes captured within the northern GOM based on data collected as part of a broader on—going study of lionfish life history in this region.

Notes On The Biology Of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Sp.) From The Northcentral Gulf Of Mexico, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson, J. Read Hendon Jan 2013

Notes On The Biology Of Invasive Lionfish (Pterois Sp.) From The Northcentral Gulf Of Mexico, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson, J. Read Hendon

Gulf and Caribbean Research

The first confirmed sightings of lionfish in the Gulf of Mexico occurred in 2010 (Schofield 2010), where they were reported in the southern GOM off the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico (Aguilar-Perera and Tuz-Sulub 2010); in 2012 more than 1,500 lionfish were collected from northern GOM locations ranging from Florida to Texas (Fogg et al. 2013). However, other than visual observations (mostly from recreational divers), there is relatively little information on the biology and ecology of lionfish in the northern GOM. The life history of invasive species can vary as they colonize new habitats and areas (Bøhn et al. 2004); thus, biological …
