Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell Jan 2015

Aquaporins As Targets For Stress Tolerance In Plants: Genomic Complexity And Perspectives, Wonkeun John Park, Benjamin Todd Campbell

Turkish Journal of Botany

As a multigene family, plant aquaporins function not only in water transport but also in transport of small elements that are important for vegetative and reproductive growth of plants. Increasing evidence exhibits the relevance of aquaporins to tolerance against abiotic and biotic stresses such as drought, nutrient deficiency, and herbivore attack. With the accumulation of crop genome sequencing, it is suggested that several aquaporin genes are conserved in subchromosomal locations as tandem duplicated members. In this review, we will discuss the compelling nature of aquaporins as multifunctional transport channels that are often encoded in clustered regions of genomes and relevant …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Climatic conditions of environmental zone Nemoral 2 of Europe are favorable for agricultural development. However, more frequent events of hot air-waves and prolonged droughts occurring as a consequence of climate change lead to soil moisture content reduction down to the plant wilting point. Dry soil conditions may have negative consequences for soil as a habitat. The goal of this study was to evaluate the cumulative after-effect of long-term conventional (CT) and no-tillage (NT) application in combination with or without crop residues on soil physicochemical properties, microbiological activity, and soil respiration (SR) under prolonged dry soil conditions. Long-term CT with residue …

Assessment Of Heavy Metal Concentrations In Water, Plankton, And Fish Of Lake Manzala, Egypt, Mohamed Bahnasawy, Abdel Aziz Khidr, Nadia Dheina Jan 2011

Assessment Of Heavy Metal Concentrations In Water, Plankton, And Fish Of Lake Manzala, Egypt, Mohamed Bahnasawy, Abdel Aziz Khidr, Nadia Dheina

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The levels of some heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) were determined in water, plankton, and fish (Liza aurata) collected from 5 sites in Lake Manzala. Metals in the water and fish exhibited a significant seasonal and regional variation, in which all metals attained their maximum value during summer, while the lowest levels were found during winter. The concentration of different metals in water, plankton, and fish tissues followed the same order: Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd. The mean concentrations of metals in the water were as follow: Cu, 0.055; Zn, 0.311; Cd, 0.020; and Pb, 0.022 mg/L. The Cd …

Research Into The Levels Of Fluorine In The Drinking Water Sources Of Cappadoccia, Turkey And Into Fluorosis In Sheep In The Region, H. Tamer Dodurka, M. Erman Or, Abdullah Kayar, Fuat Kar Jan 2002

Research Into The Levels Of Fluorine In The Drinking Water Sources Of Cappadoccia, Turkey And Into Fluorosis In Sheep In The Region, H. Tamer Dodurka, M. Erman Or, Abdullah Kayar, Fuat Kar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the levels of fluorine in drinking water in the Cappadoccia region, which is surrounded by three volcanic mountains and to determine whether cases of fluorosis in sheep exist in the region. The research was carried out on a total of 62 water samples from different water sources in the Ürgüp district of Cappadoccia where there is considerable stock-breeding, and subsequently in Göreme, Avanos, central Nevşehir and their surrounding villages. Ten water samples were collected from sources, regularly monitored for the levels of fluorine, around Kadıköy, Avcılar, Tekirdağ, Çorlu and Edirne and were …

The Industrial Fluorosis Caused By A Coal-Burning Power Station And Its Effects On Sheep, Ulvi̇ Reha Fi̇danci, Tevhi̇de Sel Jan 2001

The Industrial Fluorosis Caused By A Coal-Burning Power Station And Its Effects On Sheep, Ulvi̇ Reha Fi̇danci, Tevhi̇de Sel

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this investigation was to examine the industrial fluorosis caused by the coal burning power station in Muğla-Yatağan. Blood and urine samples of sheep, and water, plant and soil samples from around the power station were collected four times throughout the year to cover all four seasons. Fluoride ion concentrations in the water, urine, plant and soil samples were detected potentiometrically using an ion selective electrode. Serum Alkaline phosphatase (ALP-EC 3.1.3.1), Alanine aminotransferase (ALT-EC 2.6.1.2), Aspartate aminotransferase (AST-EC 2.6.1.1) and Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-EC 1.1.1.27) enzyme activities were analysed spectrophotometrically using Sigma commercial kits. Significantly higher fluoride ion concentration …

Boron Accumulation In Carp Tissues ( Cyprinus Carpio L., 1758) In Damlakes Çötören And Kunduzlar (Kırka-Eskişehir), Şaki̇r Özkurt Jan 2000

Boron Accumulation In Carp Tissues ( Cyprinus Carpio L., 1758) In Damlakes Çötören And Kunduzlar (Kırka-Eskişehir), Şaki̇r Özkurt

Turkish Journal of Biology

Samples of water, bottom clay, plankton and fish were collected over a period of one year. The boron contents of the samples taken were determined in the laboratory. The differences and relationships in the obtained data were identified using various statistical methods. Boron gradually accumulates in the plankton, bottom clay and water of Çatören and Kunduzar. Boron collects in the tissues of the fish Cyprinus carpio in both lakes, in the musce, brain and liver in Çatören, and in the musce, liver and brain in Kunduzlar. Boron pollution is more serious in Çatören dam than in Kunduzlar. It was observed …

A Study On Qualitative And Quantitative Bacterial Flora Of The Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Living In Different Fish Farms, Öznur Di̇ler, Soner Altun, Fi̇rdevs Çalikuşu, Abdullah Di̇ler Jan 2000

A Study On Qualitative And Quantitative Bacterial Flora Of The Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) Living In Different Fish Farms, Öznur Di̇ler, Soner Altun, Fi̇rdevs Çalikuşu, Abdullah Di̇ler

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the qualitative and quantitative aspects of aerobic bacterial flora of the skin, gills, intestine, liver, kidney and spleen of rainbow trout in relation to pond water in two different fish farms were analysed. The bacterial load of pondwater in Seniçbey Farm was 10 2 -10 5 cfu/ml. It was determined that the total viable counts of aerobic microorganisms of pond water in this farm were higher than these in Aksu Farm (10 2 -10 4 cfu/ml). The total bacterial counts in the skin of rainbow trout in Seniçbey Farm were 10 2 -10 7 cfu/g, while in …
