Onopordum Nezaketianum Sp. Nov. (Asteraceae: Cardueae):A New Species From Central Anatolia, Turkey, Süleyman Mesut Pinar, Hüseyi̇n Eroğlu

Turkish Journal of Botany

Onopordum nezaketianum sp. nov. (Asteraceae: Cardueae) from the Central Anatolia region of Turkey is described based on morphological and palynological features. The new species is morphologically related to O. davisii Rech. f. and O. turcicum Danin, and is characterized by its capitula solitary or 2?4 on leafy 2?20 cm long peduncles, phyllaries 5?6 seriate, outer phyllaries sparsely arachnoid pubescent, ovate?lanceolate, flat or nearly reflexed; median phyllaries sparsely arachnoid pubescent, narrowly ovate?lanceolate, reflexed; inner phyllaries glabrous, linear?lanceolate, erect, flowers 20?25 mm; 4 corolla lobes equal, 4?5 mm long, and 5th lobe 6?7 mm long, pappus barbellate. Achenes 4.0?5.1 x 2.0?2.5 mm, …

Hybridization Among Three Cirsium (Asteraceae) Species And Important Evidence For Three New Hybrids From Turkey, Tuncay Di̇rmenci̇, Taner Özcan, Turan Arabaci, Sevcan Çelenk, Gülnar İsmayi̇lova, Bayram Yildiz Jan 2019

Hybridization Among Three Cirsium (Asteraceae) Species And Important Evidence For Three New Hybrids From Turkey, Tuncay Di̇rmenci̇, Taner Özcan, Turan Arabaci, Sevcan Çelenk, Gülnar İsmayi̇lova, Bayram Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, three new hybrids from the genus Cirsium are described for the first time. Cirsium ×nezaketiae Yıldız, Dirmenci & Arabacı, C. ×kelkitensis Yıldız, Arabacı & Dirmenci, and C. ×erzincanicum Yıldız, Dirmenci & Arabacı are investigated in detail morphologically, palynologically, and molecularly. The hybrid individuals were detected on field trips due to their intermediate morphological characters. Their morphological properties were analyzed to compare with their parents. The pollen grain morphologies of the hybrids and their allies were investigated using light and a scanning electron microscope. The pollen grains were radially symmetrical, isopolar, trizonocolporate, and with echinate or scabrate sculpturing. …

Karyomorphological Features Of Turkish Centaurea (Subgenus Cyanus, Asteraceae) Species And Its Taxonomic Importance, Emrah Şi̇ri̇n, Meryem Bozkurt, Tuna Uysal, Kuddi̇si̇ Ertuğrul Jan 2019

Karyomorphological Features Of Turkish Centaurea (Subgenus Cyanus, Asteraceae) Species And Its Taxonomic Importance, Emrah Şi̇ri̇n, Meryem Bozkurt, Tuna Uysal, Kuddi̇si̇ Ertuğrul

Turkish Journal of Botany

In this study, the karyomorphology of 20 Turkish Centaurea (subgenus Cyanus) taxa was examined. The number of chromosomes of 11 taxa belonging to the subgenus Cyanus was determined for the first time. As a result of the karyomorphological studies, the number of basic chromosomes was determined to be x = 8, 10, and 12 in annuals and x = 10 and 11 in perennials. The populations are tetraploid in the seven perennial taxa and polyploidy is not rare for this group. On the other hand, all annual taxa are diploid. Considering the asymmetry indices, we can conclude that most taxa …

A New Subspecies Of Saxifraga Artvinensis V.A.Matthews (Saxifragaceae) From Northeastern Anatolia, Sali̇h Terzi̇oğlu, Kami̇l Çoşkunçelebi̇, Murat Erdem Güzel Jan 2019

A New Subspecies Of Saxifraga Artvinensis V.A.Matthews (Saxifragaceae) From Northeastern Anatolia, Sali̇h Terzi̇oğlu, Kami̇l Çoşkunçelebi̇, Murat Erdem Güzel

Turkish Journal of Botany

Saxifraga artvinensis V.A.Matthews, which is endemic to Turkey, was discovered on Tiryal Mountain (A8 Artvin, northeastern Turkey). Approximately 175 km from its type locality, a new population of the species was discovered, in the Picea orientalis forest in the Altındere Valley National Park, in A7 Trabzon (northeastern Turkey). A comparison with the known population of S. artvinensis confirmed that this new population represented a new taxon and is described as S. artvinensis subsp. meryemii Terzioğlu & Coşkunç. An identification key and comparison with closely related taxa, based on both morphological and molecular properties, are also provided. The studied samples, belonging …

Centaurea Uysalii (Cyanus/Asteraceae), A New Species From Turkey, Emrah Şi̇ri̇n, Ömer Çeçen, Meryem Bozkurt, Kuddi̇si̇ Ertuğrul Jan 2019

Centaurea Uysalii (Cyanus/Asteraceae), A New Species From Turkey, Emrah Şi̇ri̇n, Ömer Çeçen, Meryem Bozkurt, Kuddi̇si̇ Ertuğrul

Turkish Journal of Botany

Centaurea uysalii Şirin & Çeçen, a new Asteraceae species from the province of Karaman, in Turkey, is described and illustrated herein. It is morphologically similar to C. bourgaei Boiss. (Subgen. Cyanus), but it mainly differs from its relative in terms of the involucre and achene lengths. The achene micromorphological features and karyomorphology of C. uysalii and C. bourgaei were examined in this study. The IUCN conservation status is the Critically Endangered [CR B2 a b (i, iii)] category.

Comalcandona Gibsoni Sp. Nov. (Ostracoda, Candonidae) From Comal Spring, Texas, Usa, Okan Külköylüoğlu Jan 2019

Comalcandona Gibsoni Sp. Nov. (Ostracoda, Candonidae) From Comal Spring, Texas, Usa, Okan Külköylüoğlu

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A new species, Comalcandona gibsoni sp. nov., was found from Comal Springs, Comal County, Texas, USA. The new species has four horn-like projections located on the antero- and posterodorsal ends of the valves and this unique character separates this species from Comalcandona tressleri. Some other distinguishing differences in chaetotaxy (e.g., position, length, and number of setae on the segments) can also be seen in the soft body parts (e.g., absence of gamma seta on mandibula, duckbill shape of clasping organ of first leg, numbers of whorls in Zenker?s organ). Based on the differences, Comalcandona gibsoni sp. nov. is proposed as …
