Of the 6 tachinid parasitoids, Pales pavida (Meigen) was the most prevalent species and accounted for 25% of the tachinid records. Among the tachinids, there were 2 new records for the Turkish fauna: Exorista amoena Mesnil and Palesisa nudioculata …

In the present study, the description of this poorly known taxon was emended by adding several macro- and micromorphological traits of its leaf and fruit observed under LM and SEM. Furthermore, it was compared with the closely related species E. malacoides (L.) L'Her based on both morphological and molecular data and a modified identification key for the Flora of Turkey was prepared. The conservation status was also re-assessed according to the IUCN threat criteria.

Turkish Journal of Botany

The role of smoke as a fire-related germination cue is well known in many parts of the world, including Mediterranean-type ecosystems; however, it has been neglected in the Mediterranean Basin (MB). We studied the germination response of 5 woody species found in the eastern MB (south-western Turkey) to smoke solutions derived from different plant species. Of the 5 species examined, 2 [Sarcopoterium spinosum (L.) Spach and Satureja thymbra L.] showed significant increments in germination percentage after smoke treatments compared to the control, while the remaining 3 [Calicotome villosa (Poir.) Link, Cistus salviifolius L., and Lavandula stoechas L.] did not. However, …

Determination Of Genetic Relationships Among Velezia L. Caryophyllaceae) Species Using Rapd Markers, İlham Eröz Poyraz, Emel Sözen, Ebru Ataşlar, İsmai̇l Poyraz

Turkish Journal of Biology

Random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers were used to determine genetic relationships among Velezia L. species from Turkey. A total of 432 amplified bands were obtained using 14 RAPD primers. The polymorphism in RAPD markers was high (98.61%) and was sufficient to distinguish each species. The degree of band-sharing was used for evaluating the genetic similarity between species and for constructing a dendrogram by the unweighted pair group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA). Genetic relationships among the species were found to be fully consistent with those obtained by the use of morphological characters. Data obtained from our study demonstrated that …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Stem rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt), is one of the most important diseases limiting wheat production in Turkey. Surveys were conducted in 2007 and 2008 in order to determine the races of the pathogen present in Turkey. In 2007, it was found that 91 (43%) out of 207 inspected wheat fields were infected with stem rust, and in 2008, it was found that 61 (25%) out of 242 inspected fields were infected. From these samples, 40 single pustule isolates were obtained. The North American differential set, which includes 20 genotypes with different resistance genes, …

Axial parenchyma cells included 30 crystal chains with walls as chambers in uniseriate ray cells; some cells had many crystals without any chambers and were small. Long thin crystals were found adherent to the …
