This contribution spotlights the present research on the (oreal) subalpine to subnival mountain vegetation of Turkey. It concisely compiles our present knowledge, which is very heterogeneous in geographical terms. The situation is comparatively good in NW and W Anatolia and the western half of the Taurus range, from where a first consolidation stage can be reported. By contrast, the E Taurus remains a largely unexplored area. The Pontic chains have hitherto attracted a few local researchers only, and those important pioneering accounts cover less than half of the vegetation types actually present. Biology Of The Central Desert Of Oman, Shahina A. Ghazanfar

A biological survey of the central desert of Oman was done using long distance transects. Vegetation was sparse and consisted of 200+ plant species, 22 species of mammals, 17 species of reptiles and amphibians, and more than 50 species of birds (migratory and resident). Three main vegetation types were identified based on ground substrate and the dominance of species. These were communities with Acacia Willd., Zygophyllum L., and open woodlands of Prosopis cineraria (L.) Druce. Over-grazing and development in the central desert has led to concerns over the conservation of the desert ecosystem in Oman.

Isolating barriers between sympatric interfertile species are maintained by processes that occur within their hybrid zones. Although the effects of intrinsic selection on hybrid fitness are well known, less is understood about extrinsic fitness variation. At Tiryal Dağı, NE Turkey, Rhododendron x sochadzeae Charadze & Davlianidze (R. ponticum L. x caucasicum Pall.) forms large populations in which neither segregation nor backcrossing occur, in habitats intermediate between those of its parents. Using single-copy species-specific RAPD and ISSR markers, it was determined that all R. x sochadzeae plants are F1s, and that there are many separate genets present. For quick and accurate access to information about a flora of a country it is becoming increasingly important to develop databases. Databases developed and provided by international organisations are expensive to use and difficult to maintain without outside help. It is therefore important for developing countries to develop their own plant databases best suited to their requirements. One such example is the Turkish Plant Data Service (TUBIVES), designed by Turkish systematists. This database is described with some samples, and the possibility of creating a South-West Asian Plants Information Service (SWAP-IS) is briefly discussed.

An original database, ASIUM, on Asian Umbelliferae has been compiled at the Moscow State University to include all accepted names and synonyms, principal citations in regional Floras, monographs and critical articles, protologue data and distribution in countries, their regions and provinces. A special option permits the arrangement of synomyms, which can be divided into several homotypic groups. It is also possible to extract information for analysis and comparison, for instance, of species sets from different regions to estimate their similarity. Some morphological and anatomical characteristics of Crocus pallasii Goldb. subsp. turcicus B.Mathew and Crocus cancellatus Herbert subsp. damascenus (Herbert) B.Mathew, which flower in autumn, were investigated. Detailed descriptions of these two taxa of Crocus L., which occur in Şanlıurfa, are provided and their morphological characters are compared with those given in the Flora of Turkey. The specimens were collected from different parts of Şanlıurfa within C7 of the grid system; their habitat and population status were also determined. Their anatomical structure are illustrated.

The morphological, anatomical and micromorphological features of Saponaria kotschyi Boiss. have been studied on plants collected from Osmangazi University-Meşelik Campus, Eskişehir. S. kotschyi is an endemic species and a new record from Eskişehir. In general, the results obtained from morphological studies were consistent with the description given in the Flora of Turkey, except for the calyx, as the calyx of S. kotschyi flowers not only had glandular hairs but also eglandular hairs. Ambrosia tenuifolia Spreng. (Compositae) is a new addition to the flora of Turkey from Malatya (in the East Anatolia region). The specimens collected from Malatya have different properties from the known diagnostic characteristics of the species. A. tenuifolia is a monoecious plant without glands. Its female capitula are in the axils of the upper leaves in its original description, but some of our specimens have only female capitula (female capitula in terminal racemes and lower parts of the racemes bracteate, but upper parts ebracteate) and there are many glands particularly on the tops of their fruits. Taxonomical And Ecological Investigations On Some Geophytes Growing Around Denizli Province (Turkey), Ali̇ Çeli̇k, Mehmet Çi̇çek, Gürkan Semi̇z, Mustafa Karincali

In this study, the taxonomical and ecological features of some geophytes which grow naturally around Denizli province have been investigated. From this research, which was performed between 1996 and 2000, 31 species belonging to 8 families have been determined. Thirteen soil parameters from 31 localities were analysed in order to establish plant and soil relations. The ecological spectra of the species are considered, comprising 16 species in macchie and phrygana (50%); 1 species in fields (1%); 7 species in high mountains (23%) and 8 species in forests (26%).

Some Poisonous Fungi Of East Anatolia, Kenan Demi̇rel, Yusuf Uzun, Abdullah Kaya

This study was carried out on some poisonous macrofungi samples collected from the East Anatolia region. As a result of field and laboratory studies, 36 poisonous taxa belonging to Ascomycetes and Basidiomycetes were identified. The identified taxa are given with their distributions, habitat and substrates, collection dates and collectors' numbers. One of the species, Amanita eliae Qúel. (Amanitaceae), is a new record for the poisonous fungi of Turkey.

Four Nepeta L. species endemic to East Anatolia, Nepeta baytopii Hedge & Lamond, N. crinita Montbret & Aucher ex Bentham, N. obtusicrena Boiss. & Kotschy ex Hedge and N. sorgerae Hedge & Lamond, are examined. The areas of these species are quite limited. According to "The Red Book of Turkey" the threatened categories of these species are N. baytopii, EN; N. crinita, EN; N. obtusicrena, LR(cd) and N. sorgerae, Lr(cd).

The attachment of hairs in sections of Astragalus L. may be either basal or lateral (bifurcate). This study focuses on Astragali with bifurcating hairs in the Old World (subgenus Cercidothrix Bunge). In this study, it appears that the ratio of hair arm length, and hair form and length are usually stable at the sectional level. The proposition of uniting some sections based on morphological characters is confirmed by hair characters; for example, uniting sections Tamias Bunge, Acantherioceras Rech. f. and Pseudoerioceras Ulzijchutag with Erioceras Bunge. Jasione L., a genus with small flowers in compact ebracteolate heads subtended by involucral bracts, is very isolated in the Campanulaceae. It is mainly a Mediterranean-European genus with c. 15, mostly polymorphic, species, which show evidence of recent speciation, possibly as recent as the last glaciation. In the west of its distributional range, where the greatest morphological variation occurs, there has been much recent investigation on morphology, anatomy, phenetics, molecular evidence and nomenclature. Two new hybrids of Verbascum (Scrophulariaceae) are described. Verbascum x obtusifoliiforme nothosp. nova (V. obtusifolium Hub.-Mor. x V. sinuatum L.) from İçel province (C4) and Verbascum x kovadanum nothosp. nova (V. glomeratum Boiss. x V. nudatum Murb.) from Isparta province (C3). In both cases, one of the parent species is widely distributed, while the other is locally distributed in Turkey.

The species composition and seasonal distribution of phytoplankton in Orduzu Dam Lake was studied for a year. Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) were most diverse, followed by green algae (Chlorophyta), blue-green algae (Cyanophyta), euglenoids (Euglenophyta) and dinoflagellates (Dinophyta). A total of 117 taxa were recorded and the phytoplankton of the lake contained a large number of detached benthic algae. Phytoplankton assemblages were dominated by diatoms in all the periods investigated and centric diatoms were the most abundant. We revised the section Hololeuce Bunge of the genus Astragalus L. (Leguminosae) in Turkey. The section used to contain 20 taxa in Turkey, but in this study it has been reduced to 15. A new species (Astragalus dumanii Ekici & Aytaç) has been described. In addition, we concluded that A. vuralii H.Duman & Aytaç, A. cylindraceus DC., A. alindanus Boiss., A. paecilanthus Boiss. & Heldr. and A. squalidus Boiss. & Noë are synonyms of A andrasovszkyi Bornm., A. globosus Vahl, A. hirsutus Vahl, A. sibthorpianus Boiss. and A. amoenus Fenzl respectively. The floristic characteristics of Beydağı are given and the vascular plant species growing there are documented. Beydağı is situated in the south of Malatya province and is in the Irano-Turanian phytogeographical region. The research was carried out between 1986 and 2000. Two thousand one hundred plant specimens were collected from the area. At the end of the study, 873 vascular plant species (897 taxa, 185 subsp., 112 var.) and 357 genera belonging to 73 families were identified: 140 taxa (16.9%) are endemic to Turkey. This study includes species of Poaceae (Gramineae) growing in Malatya province. According to the grid system used in the Flora of Turkey, the research area is situated in the B6, B7, C6 and C7 squares. Approximately 346 plant specimens were collected from the area. This study concerns the flora of the northern part of the Emirdağ nountains. According to Davis's grid system, the research area lies in B3 square. Four hundred and ninety-five taxa belonging to 279 genera and 70 families were found after the identification of 754 plant specimens collected from the research area. Forty-seven taxa are new records for the B3 grid square. The rate of endemism is 15.9%. The distribution of taxa within the phytogeographical regions is as follows: Irano-Turanian elements 17.9%, Mediterranean elements 8.8% and Euro-Siberians 5.4%. Thidiazuron (TDZ) is among the most active cytokinin like substances and induces greater in vitro shoot proliferation than many other cytokinins in many plant species. Leaf, stem, stem node and cotyledonary node explants of 2 extensively cultivated Turkish lentil cultivars, Ali Dayı and Kayı 91, were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (MS) media supplemented with various concentrations of TDZ. Trachystemon orientalis (L.) G.Don (Boraginaceae), which is distributed in various habitats in the Black Sea region, was investigated morphologically and anatomically. The flowering branches, leaves and rhizomes of T. orientalis are used as food. This species is a Euro-Siberian floristic element. The genus Trachystemon D.Don is represented by one species in Turkey. This research was carried out between 1995 and 1996 in Devegeçidi Dam Lake and a total of 112 taxa belonging to 5 divisions were identified, with 29 species belonging to Cyanophyta, 5 to Euglenophyta, 45 to Chlorophyta, 5 to Pyrrhophyta and 28 to Bacillariophyta.
