Several effective fixed-time AI (FTAI) protocols have been developed to facilitate AI in beef heifers that circumvent the need for estrus detection. Among these are the 5-d CO-Synch + controlled intravaginal progesterone insert (CIDR) protocol (5dCO), PGF2α (PG) 6-d CIDR protocol (PG-6dCIDR), and 14-d CIDR-PG protocol (14dCIDR-PG). Although each of these protocols varies in duration and approach to synchronizing estrus and ovulation, each has been reported as an effective method to facilitate FTAI in beef heifers. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare FTAI pregnancy rates in beef heifers synchronized with these 3 CIDR-based protocols. Virgin beef heifers …

Ecological studies often suggest that diverse communities are most resistant to invasion by exotic plants, but relatively few local species may be available to a rehabilitation practitioner. We examine the ability of monocultures and diverse assemblages to resist invasion by an exotic annual grass (cheatgrass) and an exotic biennial forb (dyer’s woad) in experimental rehabilitation plots. We constructed seven assemblages that included three monocultures of grass, forb, or shrub; three four-species mixtures of grasses, forbs, or shrubs; and a three-species mixture of one species from each growth form in an experimental field setting to test resistance to invasion. Assemblages were …

Ad Hoc Smoothing Parameter Performance In Kernel Estimates Of Gps-Derived Home Ranges, Krysten L. Schuler, Greg M. Schroeder, Jonathan A. Jenks, John G. Kie

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Accuracy of home-range estimates in animals is influenced by a variety of factors, such as method of analysis and number of locations, but animal space use is less often considered and frequently over-generalized through simulations. Our objective was to assess effect of an ad hoc (h_ad hoc)smoothing parameter in kernel analysis from two species that were predicted to have different patterns of utilization distributions across a range of sample sizes. We evaluated variation in home-range estimates with location data collected from GPS collars on two species: mule deer Odocoileus hemionus and coyotes Canis latrans. We calculated home ranges using …

New-hoof growth is regarded as the most reliable metric for predicting age of newborn ungulates, but variation in estimated age among hoof-growth equations that have been developed may affect estimates of survival in staggered-entry models. We used known-age newborns to evaluate variation in age estimates among existing hoof-growth equations and to determine the consequences of that variation on survival estimates. During 2001–2009, we captured and radiocollared 174 newborn (#24-hrs old) ungulates: 76 white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Minnesota and South Dakota, 61 mule deer (O. hemionus) in California, and 37 pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in South Dakota. Estimated age of known-age …

Health and Nutritional Sciences Faculty Publications

A metabolic health crisis is evident as cardiovascular diseases (CVD) remain the leading cause of mortality in the United States. Effects of resistant starch type 4 (RS4), a prebiotic fiber, in comprehensive management of metabolic syndrome (MetS) remain unknown. This study examined the effects of a blinded exchange of RS4-enriched flour (30% v/v) with regular/control flour (CF) diet on multiple MetS comorbidities. In a double blind (participants-investigators), placebo-controlled, cluster cross-over intervention (n = 86, age≥18, 2-12 week interventions, 2-week washout) in the United States, individuals were classified as having MetS (With-MetS) or not (No-MetS) following International Diabetes Federation (IDF)-criteria. RS4 …

An Affinity–Effect Relationship For Microbial Communities In Plant–Soil Feedback Loops, Yi Lou, Sharon A. Clay, Adam S. Davis, Anita Dille, Joel Felix, Analiza H. M. Ramirez, Christy L. Sparague, Anthony C. Yannarell May 2014

An Affinity–Effect Relationship For Microbial Communities In Plant–Soil Feedback Loops, Yi Lou, Sharon A. Clay, Adam S. Davis, Anita Dille, Joel Felix, Analiza H. M. Ramirez, Christy L. Sparague, Anthony C. Yannarell

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Feedback loops involving soil microorganisms can regulate plant populations. Here, we hypothesize that microorganisms are most likely to play a role in plant–soil feedback loops when they possess an affinity for a particular plant and the capacity to consistently affect the growth of that plant for good or ill. We characterized microbial communities using whole-community DNA fingerprinting from multiple "home-and-away" experiments involving giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.) and common sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and we looked for affinity–effect relationships in these microbial communities. Using canonical ordination and partial least squares regression, we developed indices expressing each microorganism's affinity …

Pre-Plant Anhydrous Ammonia Placement Consequences On No-Till Versus Conventional-Till Maize Growth And Nitrogen Responses, Peter Kovacs, George E. Van Scoyoc, Thomas A. Doerge, James J. Camberato, Tony J. Vyn Mar 2014

Pre-Plant Anhydrous Ammonia Placement Consequences On No-Till Versus Conventional-Till Maize Growth And Nitrogen Responses, Peter Kovacs, George E. Van Scoyoc, Thomas A. Doerge, James J. Camberato, Tony J. Vyn

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

With the advent of precision guidance systems, maize (Zea mays L.) farmers in various tillage systems have more options in pre-plant nutrient banding relative to the intended crop rows. Anhydrous ammonia (NH3) placement during pre-plant application is of interest because of concerns for possible ammonia toxicity to maize seedlings when high NH3 rates are applied too close to the seed row and the need to improve plant-nitrogen (N) use efficiencies. Field studies were conducted between 2010 and 2012 near West Lafayette, IN, to compare traditional angled (diagonally) vs. precision-guided parallel NH3 applications (the latter was offset 15 cm from …

Common Sunflower Seedling Emergence Across The U.S. Midwest, Sharon A. Clay, Adam Davis, Anita Dille, John Lindquist, Analiza H. M. Ramirez, Christy Sprague, Graig Reicks, Frank Forcella Mar 2014

Common Sunflower Seedling Emergence Across The U.S. Midwest, Sharon A. Clay, Adam Davis, Anita Dille, John Lindquist, Analiza H. M. Ramirez, Christy Sprague, Graig Reicks, Frank Forcella

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

Predictions of weed emergence can be used by practitioners to schedule POST weed management operations. Common sunflower seed from Kansas was used at six Midwestern U.S. sites to examine the variability that 16 climates had on common sunflower emergence. Nonlinear mixed effects models, using a flexible sigmoidal Weibull function that included thermal time, hydrothermal time, and a modified hydrothermal time (with accumulation starting from January 1 of each year), were developed to describe the emergence data. An iterative method was used to select an optimal base temperature (Tb) and base and ceiling soil matric potentials (ψb and ψc) that resulted …

Does The Conversion Of Grasslands To Row Crop Production In Semi-Aridareas Threaten Global Food Supplies, David E. Clay, Sharon A. Clay, Kurtis D. Reitsma, Barry H. Dunn, Alexander J. Smart, Gregg G. Carlson, David Horvath, James J. Stone Feb 2014

Does The Conversion Of Grasslands To Row Crop Production In Semi-Aridareas Threaten Global Food Supplies, David E. Clay, Sharon A. Clay, Kurtis D. Reitsma, Barry H. Dunn, Alexander J. Smart, Gregg G. Carlson, David Horvath, James J. Stone

Agronomy, Horticulture and Plant Science Faculty Publications

In the world's semi-arid regions, high crop demands have produced short term economic incentives to convert food production on native grasslands to dryland row crop food production, while genetic enhancements and equipment have reduced the risk of crop failure. The objectives of this paper were to discuss (1) the importance of considering the long-term sustainability of changing land use in semi-arid regions; (2) the impact of extreme climatic events on ecosystem functioning; and (3) factors contributing to higher crop yields in semi-arid regions. Semi-arid regions contain fragile areas where extreme climate events may be a tipping point that converts an …

A New Perspective On Trait Differences Between Native And Invasive Exotic Plants, A. Joshua Leffler, Jeremy J. James, Thomas A. Monaco, Roger L. Sheley Feb 2014

A New Perspective On Trait Differences Between Native And Invasive Exotic Plants, A. Joshua Leffler, Jeremy J. James, Thomas A. Monaco, Roger L. Sheley

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Functional differences between native and exotic species potentially constitute one factor responsible for plant invasion. Differences in trait values between native and exotic invasive species, however, should not be considered fixed and may depend on the context of the comparison. Furthermore, the magnitude of difference between native and exotic species necessary to trigger invasion is unknown. We propose a criterion that differences in trait values between a native and exotic invasive species must be greater than differences between co-occurring natives for this difference to be ecologically meaningful and a contributing factor to plant invasion. We used a meta-analysis to quantify …

Estimating survival and documenting causes and timing of mortality events in neonate bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis) improves understanding of population ecology and factors influencing recruitment. During 2010–2012, we captured and radiocollared 74 neonates in the Black Hills, South Dakota, of which 95% (70) died before 52 weeks of age. Pneumonia (36%) was the leading cause of mortality followed by predation (30%). We used known fate analysis in Program MARK to estimate weekly survival rates and investigate the influence of intrinsic variables on 52-week survival. Model {S1 wk, 2–8 wks, .8 wks} had the lowest AICc (Akaike’s Information Criterion corrected for …

Benchmark Survey, Sdsu Extension

SDSU Extension Reports

In 2011, SDSU Extension faced significant state and federal budget cuts (FY2012), which meant the concept of a traditional Extension system would not be financially feasible. In response to these cuts, SDSU Extension implemented a new staffing model, reorganized into eight Regional Extension Centers and emphasized a web-based delivery system through www.iGrow.org. How did these changes impact SDSU Extension’s ability to support its land-grant mission to provide educational programs that strengthen agriculture and natural resources, families and communities? To find out, SDSU Extension contracted with a third-party marketing firm to interview 400 crop and livestock producers throughout South Dakota. The …
