Methods Of Analysis Of Yield From Antecedent Winter Water, Charles Gregg Carlson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This investigation is an evaluation of methods of analysis of water conserved during off-season periods and evaluation of the effect on the subsequent crop. Energy and water shortages during the midsummer peak irrigation season have forced farmers to consider the possibility of irrigation at times other than peak growth stages as an alternative practice. Dryland farmers are interested in the benefit of water conserving cultural practices such as summer fallow and snow trapping. To evaluate the benefit of these off-season practices, a yield function based upon water availability is necessary. In order to better understand the effects of off-season irrigation …

Plant Availability Of Aqueous Phosphates Removed By Fly Ash, Paul D. Weeldreyer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recycling non-renewable resources has become increasingly. important as man has continuously expected more and more from his environment. As stated by Spendlove (1976): "Recycling certainly is not new. It appears, in fact, to be one of the most obvious laws of nature, much like the seasons, the tides, and the life and death processes. It is not surprising, therefore, that the greatest motivating force behind present recycling efforts is the worldwide concern for the deteriorating natural environment." This ever-increasing demand for more production has created the need for more stringent pollution controls to maintain an acceptable quality of life. Pollution …

Methodology Development For The Study Of The Anaerobic Bacterial Flora Of Bovine Feces, Donald G. Kirsch Jan 1978

Methodology Development For The Study Of The Anaerobic Bacterial Flora Of Bovine Feces, Donald G. Kirsch

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The intestinal bacterial flora of an animal has a considerable influence on the physiology of that animal. Some bacteria of the intestine are pathogenic and can initiate infections if they gain access to a susceptible individual. Some of the intestinal bacteria can produce potent carcinogens in vitro and can presumably do this also in vivo. Food passing through the alimentary tract of an animal is also chemically modified through the enzymatic action of the bacterial flora. The animal is also protected from some enteric infections through the antagonistic and competitive actions of the established organisms of the normal bacterial flora. …

Flumethasone Induction Of Parturition In The Ewe, Donald H. Rommereim Jan 1978

Flumethasone Induction Of Parturition In The Ewe, Donald H. Rommereim

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The idea of controlling the time of parturition in domestic mammals has arisen in the last 15 years from the development of techniques of estrous synchronization and from studies achieved on the mechanism of birth. Controlling the time of parturition is a management technique by which a producer might reduce livestock losses at birth and/or cut production costs. Birth for the new-born, or parturition for the mother is a critical time. Controlling the time of parturition allows the producer to exercise a constrained supervision at this critical time, and therefore limit possible losses. Being present at birth allows the producer: …

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On The Southern Corn Rootworm, Denise Gayle Hanson Jan 1978

Effects Of Gamma Radiation On The Southern Corn Rootworm, Denise Gayle Hanson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Insects continue to be one of the major problems of man. It is, however, becoming more and more difficult to find substances that are effective in controlling insects and that are environmentally safe. It has become apparent that to control or eliminate harmful insects, alternate methods of control must be developed to replace or reduce the use of insecticides. One possible alternate method of control is to use insects against themselves in a process called the sterile male technique. This technique generally uses gamma radiation to induce sterility in males. When they are released into the native population and mate …

The Effect Of Foliar Fertilization On Soybean Yield And Leaf Necrosis, Robert Jay Goos Jan 1978

The Effect Of Foliar Fertilization On Soybean Yield And Leaf Necrosis, Robert Jay Goos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) is a very important world crop. The seed is rich in both protein and oil, making it a valuable human food resource. Many scientists believe that there are physiological barriers preventing increased soybean yields. Any agronomic discovery that would consistently increase soybean yields would be important to world food production. One possible yield barrier in soybeans concerns the mineral nutrition of the plant during the seed-filling stages of growth. During this period of growth, translocation of N, P, K, and S from the plant foliage to the developing seed occurs, accompanied by a virtual …

The technology of the 21st century will need to develop new methods and means whereby grains can be increasingly used to provide the nutritional needs of humans. Therefore, animal scientists must work toward even more efficient utilization of roughages by ruminant animals. Efficient conversion of roughages to high quality human …

Reasons Why Cows Were Removed From The Sdsu Fairy Herd 1. Discriminant Analysis To Classify Cows With Or Without Reproductive Problems, Fred Tidemann Jan 1978

Reasons Why Cows Were Removed From The Sdsu Fairy Herd 1. Discriminant Analysis To Classify Cows With Or Without Reproductive Problems, Fred Tidemann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

One of the keys to financial success in the dairy business is the ability of management to detect herd problems and correct them instead of culling cows. It is well known that the average productive life of the dairy cow is less than 4 yr, which is short compared with her potential life. Involuntary removal of cows causes economic loss directly as a result of its effect on yearly milk production, increased replacement cost, and indirectly because the potential selection differential is reduced with premature loss of high producing cows. The degree of culling is related to important economic considerations …
