The approaching post-war period makes it desirable to focus attention on the opportunities and problems involved in the settlement of demobilized ex-service men and others on farms and ranches in South Dakota. It will also be essential to determine some of the desirable changes that have and should take place in size of farms in the various parts of the state. This report represents one in a series of Wartime studies of agricultural adjustments in South Dakota to meet changing demand conditions. The general purpose of the study is to indicate some of the changes that have taken place during the present war period and to estimate desirable crop and livestock adjustments for 1945 and the transition period and some methods of achieving these objectives. This is a graphic presentation of crop and livestock changes which have occurred in South Dakota during the period, 1924-44. The study of changes which have come about during the past twenty years should be a useful guide in planning adjustments for the transition and post-war periods. Drought conditions accompanied by low prices during the "thirties" disrupted the crop and livestock pattern. More favorable conditions in recent years have brought about a fuller use of agricultural production facilities in the state. The present war-time level of crop and livestock production will need to be adjusted to new demand conditions. These …

A new farm record project was started in 1943 by the Agricultural Experiment Station in cooperation with the Agricultural Extension Service. Previous to 1943 it had been customary for the Extension Service to summarize farm records sent in to the state office by farmers. The purpose of the new project was to obtain more detailed farm record information which would be useful in planning improvements in the organization and operation of farms in the various areas of the state.
