Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi Dec 2010

Leaching Mechanism Of Semiconducting Minerals, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

The mechanism of leaching of semiconducting minerals such as PbS, ZnS, UO2, etc., has been the subject of intensive speculation by hydrometallurgists in the early 1950s. The electrochemical mechanism proposed in 1970 by the author in volume 2 of his Principles of Extractive Metallurgy avoids the assumption of forming intermediate complexes that cannot be isolated or identified.

David J. Muth

Advanced biofuels will be developed using cellulosic feedstock rather than grain or oilseed crops that can also be used for food and feed. To be sustainable, these new agronomic production systems must be economically viable without degrading the soil and other natural resources. This review examines six agronomic factors that collectively define many of the limits and opportunities for harvesting crop residue for biofuel feedstock in the midwestern United States. The limiting factors include soil organic carbon, wind and water erosion, plant nutrient balance, soil water and temperature dynamics, soil compaction, and off-site environmental impacts. These are discussed in relationship …

Hydroxyl-Terminated Poly(Urethane Acrylate) As A Soft Liner In Dental Applications: Synthesis And Characterization, Selda Keskin Jul 2010

Hydroxyl-Terminated Poly(Urethane Acrylate) As A Soft Liner In Dental Applications: Synthesis And Characterization, Selda Keskin

ABSTRACT: Hydroxyl-terminated poly(urethane acrylate) s were synthesized for use in biomedical applications. Acrylate end capping via an interesterification reaction was successfully achieved with methacryloyl chloride addition to the hydroxyl ends of the polyurethane at low temperatures. 2,4-Toluene diisocyanate, 1,6-hexane diisocyanate, and methylene diphenyl diisocyanate were used as diisocyanates for urethane synthesis, and they were end-capped with methyl methacrylate and hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The nature of the monomers that we used had an effect on the thermal and morphological properties that were interpreted in terms of the level of hydrogen bonding and the degree of phase separation. The synthesized polymers were characterized …

Effects Of Fully Developed Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Hyphae On Seed Germination Of Lolium Perenne, G Keith Bartley Jr, Richard J. Gualandi Jr, Robert M. Augé Apr 2010

Effects Of Fully Developed Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Hyphae On Seed Germination Of Lolium Perenne, G Keith Bartley Jr, Richard J. Gualandi Jr, Robert M. Augé

Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.

Previous studies demonstrate that the inoculation of mycorrhizal spores in seeds can improve speed of germi- nation and establishment in grass seedlings. The universally positive effects of arbuscular mycorrhiza on plants suggest that fully developed mycorrhizal hyphae could potentially induce faster germination in seeds. This study presents data indicating that the inoculation of full grown hyphae in seeds of Lolium perenne inhibits speed of germination, independent of level of available soil nutrients. Daily measurements of seedling height between in- fected and non-infected plants at different starter fertilization rates in a sand profile showed that abuscular mycor- hiza influenced seeds emerged …

Metals: Typical And Less Typical, Transition And Inner Transition, Fathi Habashi Mar 2010

Metals: Typical And Less Typical, Transition And Inner Transition, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

While most chemists agree on what is a metal and what is a non-metal there is a disagreement with respect to what is a metalloid and what is a transition metal. It is believed that this problem can be solved if two new terms are adopted: typical and less typical metals. These new terms will also help reconcile the European Periodic Table versus the North American regarding numbering of groups as well as the IUPAC numbering which could be as well abandoned in favour of group names as will be shown in the manuscript.

The Future Of Southern Agriculture, Gregory Keith Bartley Jr. Mar 2010

The Future Of Southern Agriculture, Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.

Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.

The increasing demand for the supply of energy in the south heavily impacts the allocation of water for use in agriculture. With such a high percentage of the south's freshwater going towards energy production, little can make its way into food, feed, and fiber. Because the need for this exponential energy production in the south is currently greater than its agricultural importance, southern farmers are left to endure heavy irrigation restrictions. The solution to this problem can manifest itself in one of two ways. Southern states can either implement strategies that can reduce plant water consumption without reducing yield, or …

Survey Report On Training And Spending On Customer Care Services, Deogratias Harorimana Sr

Dr Deogratias Harorimana

In a bid to promote and develop good customer care service in various sectors of Rwandan economy, a survey was conducted to assess progress and trends on customer service capacity building. Although shortcomings are there, there have been efforts and registered trends across the country on service delivery front. Investment in Capacity Building IS happening in certain sectors but this is unevenly distributed. In 2008 companies had started recognizing the significance of good service and cultivate a good working environment and training. From 2009, there was a decline in investment in capacity building in front office and key service delivery …

Aqua Science Through The Ages. An Illustrated History Of Water, Fathi Habashi Jan 2010

Aqua Science Through The Ages. An Illustrated History Of Water, Fathi Habashi

Fathi Habashi

Water a component of the Four Elements considered by the ancient philosophers as essential for survival, played, and is still playing an essential role in society. Great civilizations in ancient times developed along great rivers. The ancient peoples knew how to manage water supplies by digging canals, controlling floods, and using water for irrigation. They designed equipment that used water to measure the time, to determine the density of solids, to fight fires, and to create vacuum. Modern engineers exploited water flow to design and construct huge hydroelectric power stations. Waterways and navigation systems were also an essential element for …
