We previously observed that mental manipulation of the pitch level or temporal organization of melodies results in functional activation in the human intraparietal sulcus (IPS), a region also associated with visuospatial transformation and numerical calculation. Two outstanding questions about these musical transformations are whether pitch and time depend on separate or common processing in IPS, and whether IPS recruitment in melodic tasks varies depending upon the degree of transformation required (as it does in mental rotation). Much recent research has documented how, under 'creative' capitalism, approaches towards work and types of work are changing. This paper extends this research direction, uncovering the discourses that influence conditions of work in one sector of the cultural industries: what can loosely be defined as the 'dance music industry'. It examines the role that networking and social relations play in maintaining a music scene through which work opportunities are created. The paper also explores how attitudes toward work in this particular cultural pursuit are emblematic of wider shifts in working practices within the cultural and creative industries. This paper analyses the relationship between the marketing and consumption of popular music and the historical representation of one tourist destination and its peoples. It focuses on how Hawai‘i was represented when it became an American state, mass tourism was emerging and graphic record covers were new. It traces the manner in which Hawai‘i was commodified and represented for vicarious consumption, and how particular musical objects created and reflected structures of tourism.

This paper draws on research conducted for over a decade on the musical cultures of the New South Wales Far North Coast, as a contribution to debates in geography and popular music studies on the links between music, place and articulations of cultural identities. This chapter examines how music informs the creation of tourist places in Australia. It discusses one genre-ambient music-and the way it is related to geography both symbolically (in terms of cultural representations), and literally (in terms of links to musical and touristic activities in particular towns). The rise of ambient music has contributed to the imaginative representation of a touristic Australia of "natural" physical and cultural landscapes, where indigenous people are particularly significant.
