Transcriptomic Changes In Wheat During Tan Spot (Pyrenophora Tritici-Repentis) Disease, Madhav Nepal Aug 2019

Transcriptomic Changes In Wheat During Tan Spot (Pyrenophora Tritici-Repentis) Disease, Madhav Nepal

Madhav Nepal

Objectives
Tan spot is a yield-reducing disease that affects wheat and is caused by the fungus Pyrenophora tritici-repentis (Ptr). Eight races of Ptr have been identified based upon production of the effectors Ptr ToxA, Ptr ToxB, and Ptr ToxC. Wheat cultivars have also been characterized by their resistance and susceptibility to races of Ptr and sensitivity to the effectors. The objective of this research was to assess differences in gene expression between Ptr resistant and susceptible wheat cultivars when either inoculated with Ptr race 2 spores or directly infiltrated with Ptr ToxA.
Data description
A greenhouse experiment was …

Transcriptome Profiling Of Interaction Effects Of Soybean Cyst Nematodes And Soybean Aphids On Soybean, Madhav Nepal Jul 2019

Transcriptome Profiling Of Interaction Effects Of Soybean Cyst Nematodes And Soybean Aphids On Soybean, Madhav Nepal

Madhav Nepal

Soybean aphid (Aphis glycines; SBA) and soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines; SCN) are two major pests of soybean (Glycine max) in the United States of America. This study aims to characterize three-way interactions among soybean, SBA, and SCN using both demographic and genetic datasets. SCN-resistant and SCN-susceptible soybean cultivars with a combination of soybean aphids (biotype 1) and SCN (HG type 0) in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with six blocks were used to evaluate the three-way interactions in a greenhouse setup. Treatments receiving SCN were infested at planting with 2000 nematode eggs, …

Ecophysiology Of Potentilla Gracilis Douglas Ex Hook (Rosaceae): Effects Of Night Temperature And Water Stress On Photosynthetic Gas Exchange, Madhav Nepal Jun 2019

Ecophysiology Of Potentilla Gracilis Douglas Ex Hook (Rosaceae): Effects Of Night Temperature And Water Stress On Photosynthetic Gas Exchange, Madhav Nepal

Madhav Nepal

Plants in stressful environments have evolved strategies to cope with fluctuating environmental conditions. Potentilla gracilis, also known as Alpine Cinquefoil, grows in alpine meadows of the Rocky Mountains (USA), and is subjected to wide ranges of temperature, light intensity and water availability on a time scale of minutes to days during the growing season. Leaves often freeze to a brittle state at night, are exposed to high radiation while still frosty, dehydrate to wilting during the following light period, and then repeat the cycle the following day. The main objective of this research was to determine the effect of …

Resistance Components And Interactions Of Aphis Glycines (Hemiptera: Aphididae) And Heterodera Glycines (Tylenchida: Heteroderidae) In Soybean, Surendra Neupane, Madhav P. Nepal Jun 2019

Resistance Components And Interactions Of Aphis Glycines (Hemiptera: Aphididae) And Heterodera Glycines (Tylenchida: Heteroderidae) In Soybean, Surendra Neupane, Madhav P. Nepal

Madhav Nepal

The soybean aphid (SBA; Aphis glycines Matsumura) and the soybean cyst nematode (SCN; Heterodera glycines Ichninohe) are major pests of the soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Independent studies on these pests have made substantial progress in understanding the genetic basis of limiting these pests in both model and non-model plant systems. Classical linkage mapping and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified some major and minor QTLs in soybean. The studies on interactions of aphid and nematode effectors with host proteins allow us to identify molecular cues in various signaling components, including plant disease resistance and phytohormone genes. Here we review …

Sustainable Agriculture Lesson For Middle School Classrooms, Sara Colombe, Madhav P. Nepal, Jennifer Mclaughlin, Matthew L. Miller, Larry B. Browning, P. Troy White May 2019

Sustainable Agriculture Lesson For Middle School Classrooms, Sara Colombe, Madhav P. Nepal, Jennifer Mclaughlin, Matthew L. Miller, Larry B. Browning, P. Troy White

Madhav Nepal

In this lesson, students will learn about sustainability, where farmers/agriculturists can meet the needs of food, fiber, and fuel for the growing population. Students learn about growing population, its growth rate, major food source, sustainability barrel, potential ripple effects of positive impacts as well as the food waste and its effects.

Using Drones For Precision Agriculture, Jiyul Chang, Madhav P. Nepal May 2019

Using Drones For Precision Agriculture, Jiyul Chang, Madhav P. Nepal

Madhav Nepal

In this teaching module, students will learn what Precision Agriculture is and how to apply drone into Precision Agriculture practices. To use data (images) taken by drone, students will learn the basic theory of Remote Sensing. Using images, students learn how to make NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) maps and how to apply drone (remote sensing technique) in agriculture.

Breeding System And Sex Ratio Variation In Mulberries (Morus, Moraceae), Madhav Nepal Apr 2015

Breeding System And Sex Ratio Variation In Mulberries (Morus, Moraceae), Madhav Nepal

Madhav Nepal

Flowering plants exhibit a diverse array of sex expression patterns that become of particular interest when considered in the context of coexisting native-invasive congeners. This study presents findings on sex expression and sex ratio variation in two congeneric tree species, the native Morus rubra and the exotic M. alba, in the Flint Hills region of the Great Plains in the United States. Both species exhibited a subdioecious breeding system (with male, female and hermaphrodite individuals co-occurring within populations), and significantly male-biased sex ratios (i.e., males are more numerous than females). Cumulative sex ratio deviation was higher in the native M. …

Phylogenetics Of Morus (Moraceae) Inferred From Its And Trnl-Trnf Sequence Data., Madhav Nepal Mar 2012

Phylogenetics Of Morus (Moraceae) Inferred From Its And Trnl-Trnf Sequence Data., Madhav Nepal

Madhav Nepal

Morus (Tribe Moreae, Moraceae) consists of ca. 13 species of trees distributed in Asia, Africa, Europe, and North, Central, and South America. The broad geographical distribution of the genus, overlapping ranges of many taxa, and documented hybridization between some species present interesting questions of taxonomy, phylogeny, and biogeography. Phylogenetic data for Morus also contribute to higher level taxonomic work in the family. We used sequence data from ITS of the nrDNA and the chloroplast trnL-trnF intergenic spacer to study phylogenetic relationships of Morus. Phylogenies based on separate data sets were not statistically incongruent, and the combined tree …
