Effect Of Topology On The Adhesive Forces Between Electrospun Polymer Fibers Using A T-Peel Test, Florencia Ballarin, Todd Blackledge, Nicole Capitos Davis, Partrica Frontini, Gustavo Abraham, Shing-Chung Wong
Todd A. Blackledge
Electrospinning provides an effective methodology to obtain high aspect ratio polymer fibers for biomimetic applications. In this article, we evaluate the effect of topology on adhesion between aligned fibers. Polycaprolactone is electrospun using two different setups: (i) a tip collector and (ii) a flat collector. The tip collector enables the fibers to self-align. When a fiber reaches the tip collector, the next fiber is repelled by the charge they carry, forcing the fibers to deposit in a parallel arrangement. The flat collector allows the fibers to deposit at random. The adhesion between the fiber mats is measured using a T-peel …

Sound And The Moving Image:Critical Characteristics For Spectator Response, Kara Rader, Rafeeq I. Roberts, Matt Egizii, Jeffery Allen
Rafeeq I Roberts
The prevailing wisdom in the film and video production industries is that audio information outweighs visual information when it comes to spectator responses, but there are few empirical studies to support this claim. In previous research, four critical characteristics of sound have been identified: (1) Music, (2) visual/sound contradictions (defined as sound that is inconsistent with audience expectations based on visual information), (3) multi-channel sound, and (4) sound quality. Building on our previous research into music and film, we have found that many researchers have looked into the question of how music affects emotions (Eschrich et al., 2008; Have, 2008; …

Trait Selection And Welfare Of Genetically Engineered Animals In Agriculture, Michael Greger
Trait Selection And Welfare Of Genetically Engineered Animals In Agriculture, Michael Greger
Michael Greger, MD, FACLM
The release of the Final Guidance from the US Food and Drug Administration on the commercialization of genetically engineered animals has sparked renewed discussion over the ethical, consumer, and regulatory implications of transgenesis in animal agriculture. Animal welfare critiques have focused on unexpected phenotypic effects in animals used in transgenic research, rather than on the health and welfare implications of the intended productivity enhancement. Unless breeding goals are redefined to reflect social concerns, the occurrence and magnitude of undesirable side effects may increase and consumer confidence in the nascent technology may be undermined.
Molecular Engineering Of Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Polymers By Living Polymerizations, Coleen Pugh, Alan L. Kiste
Molecular Engineering Of Side-Chain Liquid Crystalline Polymers By Living Polymerizations, Coleen Pugh, Alan L. Kiste
Coleen Pugh
“Living” anionic, cationic, metalloporphyrin and ring-opening metathesis polymerizations have been used to prepare well-defined side-chain liquid crystalline homopolymers, block and graft copolymers and statistical copolymers. This paper analyzes their successes and failures by reviewing the mechanistic aspects and experimental conditions of each type of polymerization, and identifies other classes of mesogenic monomers that could be polymerized in a controlled manner in the future. The emerging structure/property relationships are then identified using well-defined SCLCPs in which only one structural feature is varied while all others remain constant. The thermal transitions of liquid crystalline polymethacrylates, polynorbomenes and poly(viny1 ether)s reach their limiting …

Effects Of Light On Flight Crew Health And Alertness; Study Results Revealed, Lori Brown
Lori Brown
Portable bright light units, the Boeing Alertness Model (BAM) and Jeppessen Crew Alert application have been introduced in a field study with long haul pilots and cabin crew in ground breaking research – which may lead to improvements in aviation safety through the development of new preventive alertness strategies. Western Michigan University, Novair Airlines, Nature Bright, Jeppesen Crew Alert and leading sleep scientists collaborated to examine whether timed blue light integrated with the Boeing Alertness Model will improve alertness, and mitigate cognitive fatigue. The CrewAlert application and timed light puts innovative preventative fatigue strategies in the palm of the crew …
Educational Data Mining: An Advance For Intelligent Systems In Education, Ryan Baker
Educational Data Mining: An Advance For Intelligent Systems In Education, Ryan Baker

Computer-based technologies have transformed the way we live, work, socialize, play, and learn. Today, the use of data collected through these technologies is supporting a second-round of transformation in all of these areas. Over the last decades, the methods of data mining and analytics have transformed field after field. Scientific fields such as physics, biology, and climate science have leveraged these methods to manage and make discoveries in previously unimaginably large datasets. The first journal devoted to data mining and analytics methods in biology, Computers in Biology and Medicine, began publication as long ago as the 1970s. In the mid-1990s …

Incorporation of dedicated herbaceous energy crops into row crop landscapes is a promising means to supply an expanding biofuel industry while benefiting soil and water quality and increasing biodiversity. Despite these positive traits, energy crops remain largely unaccepted due to concerns over their practicality and cost of implementation. This paper presents a case study for Hardin County, Iowa, to demonstrate how subfield decision making can be used to target candidate areas for conversion to energy crop production. Estimates of variability in row crop production at a subfield level are used to model the economic performance of corn (Zea mays L.) …

Comparison Study Of Different Ionic Liquid Pretreatments In Maximizing Total Reducing Sugars Recovery, Kiat Moon Lee, Gek Cheng Ngoh Dr, Adeline Seak May Chua Dr, Li Wan Yoon, Teck Nam Ang Dr., Min Gyu Lee Prof
Teck Nam Ang Dr.
A process scheme combining the most suitable ionic liquid pretreatment, followed by solid acid and enzymatic saccharification was used to maximize the reducing sugars recovery from sago waste. Three types of ionic liquids, i.e. 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl), 1- ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([EMIM][OAc]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate ([EMIM][(EtO)2PO2]) were evaluated based on their performance in terms of the total reducing sugars recovery, chemical cost, and pretreatment energy requirement. The results showed that all the ionic liquids assisted the saccharification processes by dissolving and depolymerizing the carbohydrates of the sago waste into shorter chain soluble oligosaccharides, as well as disrupting the biomass structure …
