The Psychological Needs Of Hospital Dietary Supportive Personnel, Ralph Morales Jr.
The Psychological Needs Of Hospital Dietary Supportive Personnel, Ralph Morales Jr.
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Achieving objectives in hospital food service systems is made more critical by the increasing rate of labor turnover. One of the major emphases that seems to offer promise for solving certain current manpower problems is a better understanding of the factors which may contribute to turnover. A quantitative approach to the identification of human needs in the work environment should provide information relevant to more effective planning and utilization of human resources.
The purpose of this research was to determine if by examining the psychological needs of hospital dietary supportive personnel, information could be derived for more objective management of …

Molecular Weight Determinations Of Some Salmonella Potsdam Bacteriophage Dna's, Winston H. Richards
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Two group A phages, P9c/2 and P4/2, were studied. Their density, sedimentation velocity, and biochemical properties were compared. Their densities were determined by density gradient centrifugation in 38.3% cesium chloride. Sedimentation velocity was used to determine their molecular weights. To accomplish this, the DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was labeled with tritium and T2 DNA, labeled with 32P, was used as a standard. The DNA of P9c/2 and P4/2 was separately mixed with T2 DNA and centrifuged in a 0-15% sucrose gradient. The molecular weights were calculated using the formula D2/D1= (M2 …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The specific objectives of this research were to (1) develop a method for determining labor time and labor cost of cooks by work functions in the production of selected vegetarian entrees, and (2) determine the percentage relationship of cooks' labor to food cost in selected classifications of entrees.
Application of the continuous time study methodology as developed in this research was restricted to the observation of entree cooks in a 408 bed non-profit university hospital. Observation of work function activities during the first week of a four week cycle menu for three consecutive cycles was classified under three major categories: …
Infectivity And Development Of Trichinella Spiralis In Germ-Free, Monocontaminated And Conventional Mice, Daulat Sitanggang
Infectivity And Development Of Trichinella Spiralis In Germ-Free, Monocontaminated And Conventional Mice, Daulat Sitanggang
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of the experiment was to compare the development of Trichinella spiralis in germ-free, Lactobacillus casei monocontaminated, Escherichia coli monocontaminated and conventional mice. The criteria used in the experiments were the recovery of adults and larvae of T. spiralis after 72 hours and one month post-infection, respectively. which gave an indication of the effects of no bacteria or only a certain, single species of bacterium on the development of this nematode in mice.
Germ-free T. spiralis larvae were obtained by washing them several times with sterile normal saline, and treatment with antibiotics. The gavaging procedure was done without anesthetization …

The Ashy Petrel, Oceanodroma Homochroa, At Its Breeding Grounds On The Farallon Islands, California, Elden Aldis James-Veitch
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
[Abstract not included]
Introduction:
The Farallon Islands are given as the type locality for the Ashy Petrel, Oceanodroma homochroa (Coues, 1864). Little of its biology has been studied, as information in the past has been limited to short period observations by visitors to off-shore islands along the California coast. Visitors of note were Cooper (1868), Bryant (1888), Blankinship (1892), Barlow (1894), Kaeding (1903), Emmerson (1904), Dawson (1911), Howell (1917 a and b), Loomis (1918), Thoresen (1960), and Bowman (1961).
The aim of this investigation is to provide a more detailed examination of the Ashy Petrel's breeding biology on the Farallon …
An In Vivo Perfusion Apparatus For Studies On Gingival Disease In The Albino Rat : Assessment By A Perfusion Of The Enzymes Collagenase And Hyaluronidase, James A. Smith
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This thesis describes an in vivo perfusion apparatus which can continuously deliver controlled quantities of solutions to localized, contralateral intraoral areas in albino rats. Three animals were per fused on the experimental area (the mesial sulcular area of the maxillary first molar) on one side with tap water and Trypan blue. Localization of the solution delivered and minimal histological changes due to the presence of the apparatus was demonstrated on these animals. Solutions of .5%, 1%, and 2% hyaluronidase and collagenase were perfused on the experimental areas of nine animals. When both enzymes were used, hyaluronidase always preceded collagenase in …
Immune Blocking Of Fluorescent Antibody Staining Of Streptococcus Group A Compared With Anti-Streptolysin O, George K. Peck
Immune Blocking Of Fluorescent Antibody Staining Of Streptococcus Group A Compared With Anti-Streptolysin O, George K. Peck
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The fluorescent antibody blocking antibody (FABA) test has been discribed and compared with the conventional antistreptolysin 0 antibody (ASOA) test in the detection of Streptococcus pyogenes group A antibodies in sera samples.
A slide inhibition test was used to detect the presence of FABA in the following manner; (a) fix group A streptococcal cells to a slide, (b) incubate these cells with the patient's serum for thirty minutes, (c) wash off serum with buffered saline and dry, (d) incubate these same cells with group A streptococcal fluorescent tagged antibody for thirty minutes, (e) wash and dry as before, and (f) …
Adherence Of Men With Myocardial Infarction To Prescribed Exercise, Marsha Schwartz
Adherence Of Men With Myocardial Infarction To Prescribed Exercise, Marsha Schwartz
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to find out if men with myocardial infarction followed exercise prescribed by the physician. The reasons the patients did or did not follow the exercise prescription were investigated.
An interview guide was used to gather the data for this exploratory study. The questions on the interview guide were designed to obtain information to compare the former exercise pattern of the patient to exercise after infarction. Adherence to the exercise prescription was also determined by the exercise reported in the interview. Fifteen male subjects who had myocardial infarction were interviewed in the hospital and after …

A Study To Demonstrate The Immediate Destination Of An Embolus Formed In The Lumen Of A Peripheral Venous Catheter, Rosemarie Morikone Emori
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was designed to show the immediate destination of an embolus formed in the lumen of an intravenous catheter placed in a peripheral vessel. The hypothesis stated that clots injected into a peripheral vessel will lodge in the lungs. A subhypothesis was that the clot may lodge anywhere along the circulatory pathway.
Indications of need for the study as shown by the review of literature were the following: (1) the complications resulting from the frequent use of intravenous polyethylene catheters, (2) experimental studies that showed that clots were formed around intravenous catheters, (3) the evidence that intravenous catheters predispose …

The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler
The Effectiveness Of Camphorated Paramonochlorophenol, Metacresyl Acetate, And Prednisolone In Combination As An Antimicrobial Agent, Maurice Cutler
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Post-treatment discomfort following endodontic procedures can be caused by inflammation due to injudicious use of intracanal medicaments. Camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination is advocated to reduce the inflammatory potential of the germicide and thus reduce the occurrence of post-operative pain. It is imperative that a medicament retain antimicrobial activity while reducing inflammatory potential.
This investigation was undertaken toward determining on an in vitro quantitative bactericidal versus bacteriostatic basis by use of the broth dilution test tube method whether camphorated paramonochlorophenol, metacresyl acetate, and prednisolone in combination retains antimicrobial activity comparable to selected other commonly used nonspecific germicides. …
