Twelve lactating Holstein cows (132 ± 21 days in milk) were enrolled in a Latin square experiment to explore the extent to which source and amount of supplemental dietary Zn can impact barrier function of mammary epithelial tissue. Cows received either 970 mg supplemental Zn/day as ZnSO4(LS), 1,640 mg supplemental Zn/day as ZnSO4(HS), or 1,680 mg supplemental Zn/day as a mixture of ZnSO4and Zn methionine complex (HC). Treatments lasted for 17 days followed by 4 days of sample collection. Blood and milk were collected and analyzed for markers of blood-milk leak including plasma lactose …

Grain Sorghum Response To Band Applied Zinc Fertilizer, A. Tonon Rosa, N. O. Nelson, D. Ruiz Diaz Jan 2016

Grain Sorghum Response To Band Applied Zinc Fertilizer, A. Tonon Rosa, N. O. Nelson, D. Ruiz Diaz

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Zinc (Zn) is one of the micronutrients found to be deficient in Kansas. The objective of this study was to evaluate the response of grain sorghum to Zn fertilization using strip trials. The experiment was set up in Manhattan, KS, in 2015. The experimental design consisted of two strips, one with Zn fertilizer and the other without, with five replications. Zn fertilizer was applied as starter in combination with ammonium polyphosphate at the rate of 0.5 lb Zn/a. Plant tissue samples were collected to determine Zn content. Grain yield was recorded by combine equipped with yield monitor. No significant differences …

Evaluating The Effects Of Replacing Feed Grade Antibiotics With Yeast, Cinnamon, Or Zinc Oxide And Copper Sulfate On Nursery Pig Performance, A. Langemeier, J. Morton, S. Scotten, J. L. Nelssen Jan 2016

Evaluating The Effects Of Replacing Feed Grade Antibiotics With Yeast, Cinnamon, Or Zinc Oxide And Copper Sulfate On Nursery Pig Performance, A. Langemeier, J. Morton, S. Scotten, J. L. Nelssen

A total of 288 weaned pigs (Line 200 × 400; DNA, Columbus, NE; initially 11.8 lb) were used in a 42-d study to compare the effects of feeding antibiotic alternatives (pharmacological trace minerals, copper and zinc, yeast, or essential oils), alone or in combination, on nursery pig performance in replacement to a common antimicrobial agent (carbadox, Mecadox®, Phibro Animal Health, Teaneck, NJ). Pigs were allotted to 1 of 9 dietary treatments in pens of 4 at weaning in a randomized complete block design with 8 replications per treatment. Dietary treatments were arranged with a negative control diet with no medication …

Evaluation Of Elarom Ses In Nursery Diets With Or Without The Inclusion Of High Zinc Oxide Or Feed Antimicrobials, H. Williams, J. C. Woodworth, J. M. Derouchey, S. S. Dritz, M. D. Tokach, R. D. Goodband Jan 2016

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

A total of 360 weaned pigs (DNA 200 × 400; initially 11.5 lb BW) were used in a 42-d study evaluating the effects of feeding Elarom SES in combination with high levels of ZnO and/or antimicrobials on nursery pig performance and fecal consistency. Elarom SES (Trouw Nutrition USA, Highland, IL) is a commercially available blend of short chain fatty acids (SCFAs), medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) and slow release organic acids designed to enhance growth performance and gut health. Pigs were weaned at approximately 21 d and allotted to pens based on initial BW in a completely randomized design. Experimental …

Supplemental Zinc Sulfate Affects Growth Performance Of Finishing Heifers, C. L. Van Bibber-Krueger, J. S. Drouillard Jan 2016

Supplemental Zinc Sulfate Affects Growth Performance Of Finishing Heifers, C. L. Van Bibber-Krueger, J. S. Drouillard

Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station Research Reports

Zinc is an essential mineral required for normal function of more than 300 enzymes in microorganisms, plants, and animals. Zinc-requiring enzymes participate in metabolism of nucleic acids, proteins, and carbohydrates, all of which are essential for growth of cattle. In addition, zinc is necessary for normal development and function of the immune system. The requirement for zinc in finishing cattle diets has been established at 30 ppm (NRC, Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle, 2000), though concentrations recommended by consulting nutritionists and feed manufacturers span a far broader range. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of feeding …
